A wintertime luxury.

Underneath its elegant design and rich details, the Marmot Women's Montreaux Down Coat is a cold-weather killer. The 700-fill down insulation's high warmth-to-weight ratio means you stay super warm without being weighed down by a heavy winter coat, and the down compresses easily for convenient packing on vacations. Marmot added its proprietary Down Defender treatment to the down so the feathers won't lose warmth if wetness happens to seep through the shell's DWR coating and the plush fleece lining's WR coating. The long length of this coat extends the down warmth past your mid-thighs so you stay extra cozy whether you're sporting slacks or boots, leggings, and a skirt.

The Montreaux also features an insulated hood that keeps your head nice and toasty so you don't have to squish your hair down with a beanie every day, and both the hood and its fashionable fur ruff are removable. Marmot lined the front pockets with micro fleece for a cozy feeling your fingers appreciate. The internal zippered pocket is the best place to protect your phone, and the internal drop pocket stores your gloves when you make it to work, completely warm and dry of course.

  • Polyester shell with DWR coating
  • Plush fleece-lined torso with WR coating
  • 700-fill down insulation with Down Defender treatment
  • Long length
  • Zip-off, down filled hood with removable fur ruff
  • Microfleece-lined hand-warmer pockets

Too small in bust

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small

I was looking for a warm longer length coat to replace an old L.L.Bean down coat I've had for many years. I initially ordered one from L.L. Bean only to find the quality had gone way down (claimed to be warm to -50 degrees and I was really cold at +20) and had to return. After reading how warm this coat was and wanting a coat that came at least to the knee I ordered this one. Unfortunately I had the same problem as several others have stated in that the coat was too tight in the bust. I'm 5'8", 117 lbs, 34B bust, usually wear an xsmall or size 2 on top but order a small in coats so I can add a sweater if needed. After reading that this coat tend to run small in the bust/shoulder area I sized up to a Medium figuring I would have plenty of room for a thick sweater. Wrong. Even with just a shirt on this was tight across the bust area. I tried it with a sweater and that made the coat uncomfortably tight. If I size up again to a Large the coat will be way too big in the waist and hip area and billow at the bottom. I'm sad I had to return because of fit.

I didn't get a chance to test how it performs in the cold since it was 40 degrees here today. It felt cozy and the lining was very soft. Except for the coat being too tight in the bust the rest felt comfortable and as cute as one can expect for this kind of coat. I wanted the purple color but it was sold out in my size so I got the black and was happy with the way it looked. Only problem for me in the looks dept was the fur on the hood. Mine didn't have any of the grayish tones like it does in the photo, it was a weird yellowish color. It looked like a really bad overprocessed blonde hair color and was ratty looking. Luckily that can be removed and I would have done so had I kept the coat. I liked that the fur and top of the hood can be folded back to give a clear field of vision . With the hood not folded back it fell over my eyes and I couldn't see. For now I'm going to just stick with my old L.L. Bean coat and try the Montreaux again next year when hopefully they read the reviews here and other places on the internet and in the future get the proportions right.

Will you be getting the cabernet, black, or dark steel back in stock in size M any time soon?

Responded on

Hey, we don't have any more coming in for the season but we do have ONE more Dark Steel left in the Medium. The one I had a review on below. Great color.

Let us know if you need assistance setting that up for you!

I tried 3 other winter coats this season, all of which i had to return because they were not warm enough. (One North Face and one Patagonia, and one other.) Finally this one was warm. The faux fur on the hood is lovely and you can fold it back if it's not cold enough to warrant that tunnel effect. The fleece cuffs and interior is LOVELY. And I love that the part of the neck that zips up has fleece lining on that as well so you don't have to deal with a freezing cold zipper on your chin. The length is great, interior pockets handy. I love this coat. LOVE it.

When will the Carbernet-S Montreaux Down coat be back in stock?

Responded on

Looks like we do have more of these on order, but the expected arrival date has passed by several weeks. This could mean that the vendor is unable to fulfill the quantity we ordered. At this point it does not look like we will be getting those back in stock! Sorry! Let us know if we can help you find a similar item!

Sub zero temperatures in Chicago and I have stayed warm! The steel color is beautiful. It looks almost blue at times and is versitaile with black or brown outfits. I am 5'7"/135 and got a medium. It has a nice slim fit that's not too bulky. I feel like the arms are a little short.

So popular for many reasons.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This jacket seems like one of Marmot's most popular, and after purchasing one for my sister, I can see why. She wouldn't take it off, even indoors. She could wear it around the house without overheating, thanks to the jacket's excellent breathability, but when it was windy and temps were in the teens, she was just fine - and wearing only a t-shirt underneath! The soft-lined interior and pockets feel great. All the details just feel spot-on. Marmot makes some of the best jackets, especially for the money, and this one is a great example of that.

Fleece lined pockets!

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
  • Fit: True to size

I bought this as a gift for a friend who lives in Chicago. She's about 5'5" and says the jacket fits true to size. She has this in a medium. The length is great, falls to her knees so this jacket definitely keeps her legs warm! She loves the jacket and says it's really warm. Her favorite part?- The fleece lined pockets and neck area. Extra warmth for her hands and face!

I was undecided on this coat when I got it because it runs a bit small, which creates a fitted less billowy look but also isn't always ideal with bulky sweaters underneath. I decided to keep it as I was heading to Minnesota and knew it would be super cold and wanted something long enough to keep my legs warm too. The coat was actually very good at keeping me warm the whole time I was there, wandering around all day outside in 18 degree weather. Very soft warm fleece insides and pocket warmers. Was comfy enough to keep zipped while sitting, etc. so performed better than I expected. I am a person who is ALWAYS cold and I really have to say this coat kept me warm and while maybe not the MOST stylish, is pretty cute and for the money, I don't think there is better. I got it on sale at BC for 25% off! It is a tad long so shorter people might prefer the Montreal version.

Love this coat!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small

I decided I was sick of being too cold in the winter and wanted a VERY warm, long coat for this year. I initially got the long, black North Face Parka. It was so lightweight, the wind went right through the sleeves and I was cold in no time. Returned it. Looked at tons of other down coats and was so disappointed in how little fill they are using these days. I finally discovered this Marmot coat. This coat is WONDERFUL! Really, truly warm. The inside has a super soft, fleece lining in the torso area. The fabric seems to be very wind proof. I have taken walks on very windy, cold days, and I feel nothing. I like the fact that it comes down to the top of my knees. I truly feel like I am wrapped up in my favorite comforter! The hood is really nice too. It stays put and if you leave the fur ruff on, it extends out further, keeping the wind off your face. I cannot say enough good things about this coat. It was well worth the money. Size wise- I am 5 ft, 3 1/2 inches tall and weigh 120. I ordered the Small. It fits fairly snugly. It is a pretty tight fit with a thick sweater. I like the fact that it is snug, but you should go up a size if this is a concern! I originally wanted my coat to be black, but this one wasn't available in black when I was shopping- so I got the dark steel color. Have to say, I'm glad I got this color. It is really good looking and different than every other coat you see these days.

What is the center back length of a medium?

Sleeping Bag or Down Jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I can't say enough good things about this thing. It's a great option for a puffy long coat that you want to be able to wear in a storm or around downtown to keep you warm and dry from that light snowfall. Here are some of my favorite things:

- The Down Defender treatment is hard to beat from Marmot. It does great in a jacket or even my Trestles sleeping bag.
-The fleece lined backing and cuffs.
-The length. I'm 5'9" and it hits my knees. It doesn't run long, it is long.
-Detachable hood
-The Quality is hard to argue with. You get what you pay for. It's a beautifully made jacket. Once you open it up and wear it you'll realize that.
-Last but not least, the easy zippers. It's a two way zipper. Easy to zip and unzip. That's a favorite among their products. Also what's nice with this is it's never an issue to sit down or move around while I'm driving to make sure it's not too tight at the knees or hips. I've had jackets before that rip at the zipper because they don't have enough room at the bottom to allow movement. Not a problem AT ALL.

Highly recommended. Have anymore questions, get in touch with our gearheads!

Great Coat- Runs a bit long

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

Overall this is a great coat. I tested out several coats before ordering this coat and I am very pleased.
1) Very warm- I live in Chicago- It's been worn in 10 degree weather with strong winds. While this coat does not have a wind resistant shell, i still had decent wind protection- I think for the polar vortex days this will work but you will need some good base layers. If you wear this coat while it's in the 30's or 40's you will most likely be hot.
2) Very soft- the inside is lined in a very soft fleece-
3) Cuffs inside the sleeve- help seal you from the cold
4) There is a cinch for the hood and it is adjustable from the back.
5) 700 down but not bulky- slim fit

This coat fits true to size. I'm 4'10 and 95 lbs - I usually get an XS but i decided to go with the Small and I'm glad that i did for the extra room to layer. That being said, it is long- past my knees- but remember my height. :) I prefer the longer length so for me it's not an issue.

I do wish it had side zippers at the bottom- it is very slim fit so if you are trying to take a large step up or down, it's not easy. Not that big a deal to me but something to consider.

Bottom Line- Great Coat - runs a tad long, keeps me warm. Once a vortex hits again, I'll update.

Beautiful Coat

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small

I loved this coat but unfortunately had to send it back. I ordered a medium. I am 5'5 135 and I could not fit a sweater under it.
Customer Service was great and very helpful. My husband loved his vest, I will definitely order from backcountry again

Really warm but didn't fit

  • Fit: Runs small

I was disappointed to return the coat but it was too small in the chest/arms. I'm 5'6", 135 lbs and got a size M. I've tried a number of other similar coats from other brands and had the same problem --then try the L and it's a sloppy fit. I was encouraged by the reviews that this was going to be my perfect warm winter coat but it was not to be!

Does the hood have a cinch cord?

Correction to fit and length

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
  • Fit: Runs small

I bought this as a gift for a 5'0" , 120 lb woman who normally wears a small but we had to exchange it from the Montreaux to the Montreal to get the shorter length and then increased the size to a Medium because it was too snug for wearing bulky clothing underneath. The color (Cabernet) was absolutely beautiful and she loved the soft feel of the coat (in fact she thought at first that I sent her a pillow). She is really looking forward to being able to stay warm during the cold New Mexico winter in this coat that she loves.

Not warm enough

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small

I live in Chicago and it was -2 degrees yesterday and I wore this coat. It looks nice and seems like it would be warm enough but it was not.
I was very cold.

Also on the model it hit above the knees. I normally wear a large but I had to order an XL and it fit. BUT, it went all the way down to my calves which was annoying . The zipper also wasn't very easy to use and it kept getting stuck.

Responded on

Yes, I agree- not warm enough. I live in Ukraine, in Lviv. Two days ago here was -5C- I`m really freeze.
Fleece is only on the chest and back; sleeves and bottom completely without insulation. I too cold in the shoulders, sleeves, all legs..Today here is -10C - the same situation -too cold. I am very upset and disappointed

Can this coat get soaked on rainy days and still keep it's warmth?
