Midweight warmth that won't let up.

The Marmot Women's Jena Down Jacket features 700-fill down with Marmot's Down Defender treatment to keep you warm through damp spring and fall outings. Basically, the jacket's down is coated in a Durable Water Repellant (DWR) at the molecular level, acting as an insurance policy against wet weather to ensure your jacket retains its heat-trapping loft, despite the conditions outside (short of a full-on rainstorm or all-day deluge).

How good is Marmot's Down Defender treated down, compared to the untreated competition?  Well, Marmot claims that its treated down stays drier 10 times longer, maintains 150% more loft in damp conditions, and dries 30% faster than untreated down. Plus, the Down Defender treatment enhances the down's cluster integrity for longer lasting warmth.

Aside from the jacket's midweight insulation that's great for chilly outings and casual wear, the Jena features a durable polyester mini ripstop shell that's also treated with a DWR for added resistance to passing showers. Its zippered hand pockets provide a place for small snacks and accessories when you're hiking and camping, and the elastic drawcord hem cinches tight for a great fit. In addition, this jacket uses Marmot's Angel-Wing Movement for freedom of motion when you're pitching a tent, hanging a bear bag in the wilderness, or retrieving items from hard to reach places in your pack.

    Awkward on stocky people

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

Agreed with Anne P. I'm 5 ft 4, 135 lbs, 36B bra, and its just too tight across the chest and rides up when you lift your arms.

    But hey, super cute jacket.

    Great casual jacket

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Got this in the gem blue - Gorgeous bright color. Perfect weight for running around town. Just wore it skiing this past weekend, great jacket for 40 degree weather. Like how I can cinch it at the waist. I'm usually a small/medium. I purchased in the medium and it fits perfect. I love Marmot products!

    So disappointed with the fit!

    • Size Bought: med and large

I really wanted this jacket. The color, construction are great. The collar is comfortable and looks good even folded down. But the hips are small as others have mentioned. I'm 5'4", 130 lbs. I don't have big hips. The medium fit perfectly for the arms, length, bust, and the jacket zipped up. But if I lifted my arms up, it was a little too tight and would ride up. I bought the large and the hips fit, but the rest of the jacket was then too big. So I have to return both of them. I'm so disappointed! Why not have the hips be just a little bit bigger - especially when there is a draw string?

    Great Versatile Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This jacket is awesome. The fit is great, jackets usually have too short of sleeves for me, but the sleeve length on this is great. I have a medium, and I'm about 5'9". It's pretty true to size; if you have broad shoulders I would size up but the body may end up a little loose. Although it's not a super technical jacket, it's pretty versatile. It's super warm, and great for packing down into my backcountry skiing backpack. It takes up next to no space packing on the way up the mountain, but is plenty warm when I throw it on for way down. I love this jacket!

    Marmot Jena Down Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small

I bought this jacket in Gem Green so I would have another puffy jacket to wear on shorter outdoor excursions (day hikes, etc.) and around town without having to break out my super nice and expensive Arcteryx Cerium LT puffy. This piece is stylish, warm, and comfortable. It is also a bit longer (I have a slightly longer than average torso) so it just barely covers your hips and bum which is vital for colder days. I get constant compliments about the gorgeous color and the cut is fitted without restricting range of motion or layering potential.

I agree with the comment below mine though that this is not a super technical piece though. You're better off bringing a higher end puffy on extended trips or forays into more severe conditions.

Looks great, falls short on performance

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

I loved the colors, cut and fit of this jacket, but just wasn't what I was looking for in terms of performance. A great choice for a "city" jacket, the fabric has a nice mid-sheen, bright, vibrant colors and seems like it would keep perfectly warm in chilly temps.
For my backpacking and hiking purposes, though, the wrist closures, zipper and fabric just didn't seem like they were up to the durability and weather protection I was looking for.

    First Likeable "Poofy" Jacket!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: small

Iowa-bound and hit with a broad spectrum of weather, yet this coat keeps me comfortable across the board. I do use a midlayer when it gets below 10 degrees but otherwise this coat is all I need. I do have to strip it once inside or I overheat, and I've always been the cold girl! Stands up to my abuse (certified klutz), stays warm in misty/sleety gross Iowa winter stuff, and packs down easily to stuff into my locker at work or my gym bag if it's too much after a workout. And it looks GOOD, a big win for a 'poofy jacket' -- Always hated them but LOVE this one.

I am 34" in the chest, 24 in the waist, 35 in the hips; I kept the size small and returned the XS as it was just barely too narrow in the shoulder and chest for me to be comfortable moving/reaching. I am 5'6" with a long torso and short arms for my height, but this coat still hits perfectly on my hips (not too short, yay!) and isn't super long in the arms.

    A Backcountry Employee Favorite

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Size Bought: Medium

Quite a few Backcountry employees own this jacket and there is a reason for that. Awesome lite weight jacket from Marmot. Colors are really true to the pictures showing on the site.
This would be great as a lite layering jacket or as a casual wear on a nice day.

My only issue with this jacket is the shoulders run a bit small in comparison to other jackets. You don't get a ton of flexibility, which is important for me. I don't hate the jacket, will keep it on hand. Just not my go to personally.

    NO PROBLEMS YET!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

I have used this in Colorado winters getting the dogs out on a several-times-a-day basis. Very flattering...not boxy (a PLUS), but it has been extremely warm. Length is good too....below the hip bone, butt covering -- not a cold bomber- jacket that only keeps the waist up warm. Fits true to size. I have an "L," maybe a little large, but can layer underneath. Only negative..lack of creativity in colors.

    Definitely tight fit

My wife normally wears a medium in everything. Got this jacket as a gift and when she tried it on it was too tight in the bust and hips. Arms were perfect length so she's worried about getting a large. Looks like a great jacket. I love Marmot, just wish if fit better.

      Warm and cute!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Size Bought: Large

This coat is pretty warm and fits really well. I can fit a sweatshirt under it but it doesn't look too big without one under it either. The color is great and it's fairly lightweight. Great deal.

      Nice jacket

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
      • Fit: Runs small

The fit is not too good.
Short sleeves, big over belly, kinda short lenght too. Got large to be safe, usually I do medium but it didnt fit right. Nice jacket otherwise

      I LOVE THIS JACKET

      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: XL

I got the yellow vapor color and love it. I thought the feathers might show through but they don't. I live in NC and can't wait for it to get a little colder here so I can find out just how warm it will be. I have other down jackets and have always been pleased with them but they don't compare to the way this jacket fits or feels. Love the great price that I got on this jacket also, Backcountry you're awesome!!!! Love the stickers, thanks.

      Love it!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I love this jacket! I have been dreaming of the perfect down jacket and I finally found it. It is very comfortable and the color choice is wonderful. I needed a dark jacket but didn't want black, the Gator Green was the perfect in between. The pocket's are a good depth, and the pocket on the inside is a good addition, a great place to keep a phone or wallet. The zippers are in good condition and are easy to zip when your hands are cold! Anyone in search of the perfect winter jacket will find that the Jenna Marmot, is the one for them.

      This is my second one

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: Runs small

I bought my first jena down jacket last year and loved it. I came back to the site to get another one this year in a different color. It is a very warm jacket and totally breathable. It's lightweight and not too puffy. It is tight in the hips though, not in line with the fit of the rest of the jacket. I recommend going a size up from what you would regularly buy.

      Only slightly marshmellow-ish on me

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: Large

While being a through and through Marmot brand fan, I can't quite say that this hit a full home run for me. I absolutely love the color, the weight and the size of the jacket, but I wish I didn't look as boxy as I do in this jacket.

That being said, everything else about is is AWESOME! It keeps my little frosty body toasty on a late night drive home, but it doesn't weigh you down. The fact that it will pack down into its own chest pocket means this will be my go to warmth jacket for backpacking adventures.

One thing I did notice about this jacket is that it does run a little small, but only around the waist. In most everything, I'm always a size medium on top. With this jacket, it was a little tight on my hips, so I needed to size up to get a comfortable fit when zipped up. Not that big of a deal though.

      Not true to size

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: small

It's light and fluffy, but runs way too small. The burst is too tight. The center back length (not stated in tech spec) is only 20.5 while I need 23".

I was looking to purchase this jacket before my next jacket. I have read that the down is water resistant, but I also noticed the previous comment to not typically wear this for skiing. Why is that?

      Is this jacket very puffy?

Hey Madison. If I had to rate it, I'd say it was medium puffy. It's 700 fill but it's not overstuffed. I use this jacket (and vest) for most of my winter and shoulder season activities. It's warm but not like the huge Guides Down (which is also 700 fill).

I am wondering if this jacket is breathable? I can't ski in the jacket I have because I heat up and actually become sweaty which then cools me off and I freeze

      Best Answer

      Hey Aline,

Yes, this is very breathable. There are no heavy membraines that trap in the heat. If anything if you are skiing, the wind will blow right through it. Typically, you wouldn't ski in this jacket, but I've seen plenty of people do it on sunny, dry days!

Is this jacket recommended for temperatures under 30?

      Hey Ana,

It really sort of depends what you plan on wearing under the jacket and for what activity/how long you plan on being outside. A 700 fill jacket will certainly keep you warm most of the time, and this one is one of Marmot's key items! I personally love mine, I wear it most of the time during the winter, it's the perfect to and from work/store jacket as well as an insulator under a shell on a super cold and wet day. Also, the Gator and Vapor color are special colors only for Backcountry.com.
