For the adventurer who thrives on gale-force storms in the back of beyond, Marmot created the Fulcrum Jacket with a Gore-Tex Performance Shell. When you’re exposed above the treeline and the wind is whipping you with precip, fully taped seams and 2-layer construction form a solid barrier to keep you dry. A variety of additional storm-oriented features stand ready between you and mother nature.

  • Gale-force hood with a laminated wire brim provides good protection at a key opening in the jacket so you don’t have rain and snow dumping down your shirt
  • Helmet-compatible design and ERG Hood Adjustment System mean your head can still be protected from impact without sacrificing protection from the elements
  • Zip-off powder skirt and a hemline drawcord allow versatility for when you want to switch from pow to corduroy
  • Enjoy full freedom of motion provided by Angel-Wing Movement without sacrificing any part of your storm seal
  • DriClime Lined Chin Guard adds neck protection from wind and precip
  • Laser-Drilled Pocket Backing enhances breathability, and the high placing of the pockets mean you can reach in even while wearing a harness or a pack waist-belt

Bottom Line: Bad-weather armor for the bad-weather addict.

Bomb proof

This jacket is nuts. It's completely and absolutely waterproof, windproof, hateproof, and probably not fireproof. It's super warm, and the vents keep it from overheating in moderate weather.

How does the Fulcrum stack up against the Spire? Does the Fulcrum get too hot under average ski conditions (Say around 35 degrees).

The Fulcrum is insulated and would be fine in near freezing temps, as well as colder temps. The Spire is not insulated, so you have to layer under/over it to provide any needed warmth. Both are GoreTex Performance Shell. The Fulcrum is a bit longer as well. Does that help you out?

Its like a furnace

By:

This jacket is sick. Its super light and warm as hell. Literally. For skiing it is my 'if things go wrong' jacket. I originally bought it to replace my everyday jacket, but it is so warm that i cant wear it unless the temp is below 10 degrees F. That said, i love pulling this out of my pack when i get to the top of a climb and its just down right nasty out. As for fit I got a L. Im 6'1'' and 210 pounds. the jacket fits quite well. Plenty of room if you need to layer, please don't you will catch on fire. The bottom come about three inches below belt line. There isn't an internal hand gaiter like most ski jackets these days, but it haven't found that i miss them. All in all its a great jacket espcialy if you can snag it on SAC.

Sweetness

By:
February 4, 2011

This thing has the perfect amount of insulation for 30-40 degree weather. Went Kayaking the first day and it was raining/breezy 42 degF. got a little hot till i unzipped the pits and then is was perfect. Spray just rolled off of it for the several hours we were on the water.
Next day was snowboarding in 32-35 degF rain/slush
was just in a t-shirt underneath and stayed perfect all day, about 7 hrs in the wet slush.
The wire in the hood brim keeps in nicely formed.
The lining and shell are very soft and kept me non sticky. Would not suggest this for weather past 45 deg.
I'll probably buy the non insulted version of this.

I've heard Marmot's fit runs snug. I normally wear a Large (43R suit size, 37" waist) but want enough room to layer a bit. Should I go with XL?

Perfect for what it's meant for

By:
March 24, 2011

This jacket is perfect for what I bought it for (hiking and long periods of snow play). I was surprised with how light it is out of the box. The fit is true for XL, and has just enough room for a couple thin-medium layers underneath. The jacket's articulation is very good. It stays put as you move your arms around, and there isn't a ton of adjusting necessary. There are a few elements in the design of the jacket that I like but some others might not.

Integrated hood - Warmer than a removable one.
Head sized hood - Not every activity involves a helmet. This hood is more comfortable on a bare or hatted head.
High torso pockets - I can reach them with a pack on, unlike lower pockets. Obviously not the best choice for going to work.
Integrated liner - Zip out liners are just not as comfortable, ever.

I would not use it for skiing as I would be worried about branches, and the hood wouldn't fit over my helmet anyway.
I have not gotten to use this jacket in over 2 hours of heavy rain yet.

love Marmot but....

By:

Cons: The zippers suuuck on this jacket! Agree with other post below....pockets to high, dunno kind of useless? NOT helmet compatible, unless yer nugget is the size of a grapefruit. Oh and good luck unzipping the pit zips, better have a friend close by. Pros: very warm and light, 5 degree day wind blowing sideways, all I had on on was a long sleeve and I was perfect, very waterproof(gore-tex of course). If you are looking for a SiMPle ski jacket...this is it. No horns or whistles. Also worried if i ever snagged a tree limb or branch...would probably tear easily. I have a Marmot Tamarack and in my opinion is a lot better jacket, it's just not insulated.

Somehow i cant tweak my above post.. anywho i don't know how you cant get your helmet under this hood. I have a size large coat and an XL Red Tracer II and it fits quite well. You cant pull it over the helmet when its zipper all the way up, but i don't know a single coat that you can do this. (it would make the neck hole huge)

Great jacket that just falls short

By:
December 11, 2010

Great jacket. Super warm, 100% waterproof. True to size. Surprised how soft the GorTex Performance Shell is. I really wanted to keep it but didn't realize it doesn't have hand pockets. Fine if using it for just a ski jacket but to also use it everyday would get annoying without a place to put your hands, keys, etc.. The two front pockets are just too high for that. Great option to the Arc'Teryx Sentry.

Not fun to backpack/ski with a pack on while having your belt straps grinding your zippers into your hips. These pockets are low enough that it's comfortable to chill with your hands in them, but high enough to avoid the aforementioned problem. *****
