Great coat !!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I have waited to write a review on this coat bc I wanted to live in it for atleast a month first. When I first opened up this coat I thought it was awfully light weight and thin which worried me. I called marmot and they explained its 700 down fill meant that it was going to be light weight but would affect the warmth. I decided to trust them and I tried it- it fit perfectly. I bought an xs in black- for reference I am 5'4 and my weight can vary between 110-115lbs. I am very petite, flat chested and carry most of my weight in my bottom half. The fit of this coat is very flattering and I have enough room to comfortablely layer sweatshirts and sweaters underneath if I wanted to. The fleece lined pockets are great and even on 20 degree days I can shove my hands in them if I forget gloves and I am completely fine. So about the actual function of this coat- I live in Boston and walk to work everyday so I truly did my research to find a coat that would help me survive this winter. We have had wind, rain, sleet, snow and temperatures ranging from below zero to 45 degrees so far this winter (gotta love new England weather) and I can honestly say that this coat has not failed me once in any situation. Don't be fooled by it's light weight build- this coat will keep you toasty warm, it's breathable and is absolutely water/wind resistant (I walk over a bridge on my commute). I personally think the hood is wonderful and even in extremely strong winds it stays on my head. Yes, the jacket does make a bit of a squeaky sound and at first it was aggravating me for a few days. Then I realized that most down coats make atleast some type of swishy sound (as I pass many fellow down coat commuters on my way to work) and that I wasn't going to give up on an amazing coat and being protected from the elements bc of it making a sound. Also, it doesn't make the noise when I walk. It's mostly just when I am slipping my arms through when putting on the coat. Hope this review helps if you are looking into purchasing this coat!

Perfect Coat

Coat was exactly what I needed for weather in New York and London in March. I did not need under garments as the coat kept me warm and toasty. It packed down easily for travel. I had researched prior to purchasing and was pleased with all the helpful information. The sizing was perfect thanks to the sizing information provided. The service was wonderful, received the coat within 4 days from America to Australia. Will certainly do business with this company.

My winter coat search is over!!!

After researching very carefully all the down filled coats on the market, one thing I knew was that I didn't want to wear a coat that made me look like a "Michelin Man". The Marmot Chelsea is perfectly cut for a women's shape, highlighting the waist and being padded on the inside, but only enough to keep you warm and cosy without the extra external bulk. I didn't really want true Black so I was praying that the colour sold as Black so actually the colour it appeared on the screen, or sort of deep steel grey. I love this colour and as a blonde with quite a fair complexion it is more flattering on me than black plus I can wear it with just about any other coloured sweater and pants. Now for the size. I agonised between the Med and the Large. I thought I'd opt for roomier than too snug and I made the right choice. I'm 5'7 and 140lbs but small waisted,so in the large I still have ample room yet it still gives me a waistline! The previous issue with the supposed velcro on the cuffs is definitely non-existant in this model. Just simple press studs are in place instead. The hood with the fur is a little too bulky and unless it's freezing I will likely remove it more often than not. The two way zipper takes a little patience and getting used to at first but eventually you get the hang of it. Being Australian I hate the cold so wanted this to take with me on European winter trip in December. Really pleased with my purchase and the customer service from Backcountry was exceptional. All round great experience and I highly recommend this coat.

How did I ever survive without you?

After wearing this coat during the winter in New York, I have no idea how I survived without it. It's very warm and attractive, because it has a natural waist. The hood is perfect as well. My only issue was that I couldn't decide on a size because I was between an extra small and small (5 ft 5 in and about 120 lbs). It looks like the other reviewers went for the larger size; in my case I went for the smaller size. Since the coat is so warm I don't layer a ton underneath it so the extra small has worked out very well. I can still fit a heavy sweater underneath when I want. Also I ordered the black because it's actually not black, it's a grayish-blue color that goes with both black and brown. I definitely recommend this coat.

Exactly what I wanted.

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I'd been looking for a waterproof down coat for city use. I also wanted it to have feminine cut and good color. We both have lighter Marmot MemBrain coats and jackets and we really like their breathability and design. For this case Marmot Chelsea Down Coat seemed the best choice. I went for the color Navy and size M (I am 5'6,1"and 126 lbs.), that gives me a bit of space to fit a sweater or fleece underneath if necessary. So far I have had chance to use it just above freezing with strong winds, sleet and rain. It works beautifully and breaths better than any other down coat that I have, whatever the system. The shoulders seem to have less filling than the rest of the coat, but maybe I need to fluff it up a bit more. The removable fur is a bit big and sticks out when the hood is on, but that may be a very good thing when the sleet is coming down on unexpected angles. I love this coat. It's a lifesaver and it also looks great.

Glad I bought it!

I live in the "southern tier" of New York. I just bought this coat and wore it a few times during our 0 to 30 degree weather. I love this coat. I'm 5'2" (now) and 135 lbs. I was torn between ordering the medium or large. so I tried them both out. I fit into the medium with a heavy sweater, but it was snug. So, I kept the large. It gives me plenty of comfortable room to move in with a heavy (and I mean heavy) sweater. The sleeves are long, but not uncomfortably so. The zipper comes down to just above the knees, which is comfortable. One can still walk around and get in the car without it being too restrictive. My only real complaint is that the inside pocket is a "drop in" pocket instead of a zippered/security pocket. I should add, I was standing with the wind whipping while I was putting gas in my car. It was so nice to be warm and not feeling the wind blow through my jacket!

Is the zipper 2-way? I need to open the zipper from the bottom to get into my van. I guess the coat is too long to have a 2-way zipper. Also, without quilting, how does the down stay all over the coat? Doesn't it all fall to the bottom? In one place, it says both the hood and faux fur trim are removable. In another, it says the trim is removable. Is the entire hood removable? Thanks for any answers.

Responded on

Yes, the zipper is 2-way (at least on the Marmot Chelsea I purchased from Backcountry just a couple weeks ago). The down is quilted really well. The quilting isn't visible on the outside, because of the weatherproof layer. But it's totally visible on the inside -- if you look carefully you can see some of the interior quilting in the photo where the bottom of the coat is slightly open. The entire hood is removable from the coat (attached by zipper), and the fur trim is removable from the hood (also a zipper). I have to say, this is a totally amazing coat, but I'm probably going to return it because the "black" color looks awful on me (it's not actually black -- it's a dark blue fabric that looks like it faded in the wash). Hope this helps!

Cute coat

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Colors - The blue is exactly as it looks. The brown is more of a men's khaki brown as shown, and not the warm chocolate brown I had hoped. I ordered it in blue and in brown. The fur was double thick in the blue coat it felt fuller for goose down. I think they had sent the 2011-12 model of that coat. The brown one was the 2012-13 model, like at REI, and fit so cute. But the brown one felt thinner in the down thickness. So I kept the blue coat, since it was thicker. I live in MN and ND and I needed the warmest coat. FYI - I also tried the North Face Artic coat, and this one was a nicer fit for an hourglass. I'm 5'5 and 155 lbs, and this was the nicest sillouette by far, and warm. Got it in size L. pockets zip and nice and deep. Like it much better then my 3 last LandsEnd coats.

this version vs Chelsea 2010

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've bought this coat, because I liked so much the same model in 2010 edition. What can I say, the buttons upfront are more comfortable than velcro in 2010 version, the fabric also seems better, BUT the new version of Chelsea is TWICE thinner. Before Marmot coats were the best price/quality I've known. Now it looks like a mass market brand that is only claiming to be professional (e.g. Columbia, NorthFace, etc.) Give the down back to coats!

Responded on

I'm glad I read your review. I also disappointed, but with the TNF Arctic Parka. I bought one in 2008 and it is much thicker than the ones they're selling now. I was hoping this Marmot coat would be as thick as the older version of the TNF parka, but I guess not. Thanks for point that out!!

Unanswered Question

Hi, has anyone tried on the Chelsea as well as the Montreaux? I'm planning on ordering one of them. I just fit into XS Chelsea with one heavy sweater in the store. I'm wondering how Montreaux fits in relationship to Chelsea because the reviews say it fits very small! I think a couple of people with my measurements bought M! I'm 5'6" and 115 llbs, 34C.
What I'm concerned about is that I may be a S in the Montreaux although I'm an XS in the Chelsea. Thanks!

Cute, but not warm

I bought this coat after searching long and hard for a fashionable, yet functional winter coat. I wanted something that would be extremely warm, but also be dressy enough to wear out at night. I think this coat is cute, but it was not as warm as it should be for the down fill and the price.

Warm and stylish

Kudos to marmot for designing this warm and functional but also stylish coat. I love the zippered cozy pockets, the beautiful navy color and texture of the "black" material, the way the collar looks good either zipped down or up, and the removable faux fir trim on the hood. This coat is of much higher quality than the mountain hardware coat which I had ordered previously and returned. And kudos to backcountry for their friendly and accommodating customer service

Stylish warmth

I only gave 4 stars because we've not gotten our minus degree temps yet, warm enough when hovering at the zero temp. I really like the style, doesn't feel like I'm wearing a sack, I did get one size up to allow for my work blazers and bulky sweaters...just right for comfort! The collar is very stiff (where the hood attaches) and rubs on my chin but I'm short so this may not affect most. On the whole I am extremely please I purchased this coat, just waiting to see if I made the right choice when it gets -22 up here in north central WI.

I had tried on other mid length coats to find that they all fit me quite wrong so I was a bit leery about this one. However, when I got it I was thrilled. The somewhat fitted waist is actually at my waist and not half way up my rib cage. The length is good on me at 5'3" being long enough to keep me warm but not so long as to end up with snow ans slush splatter all over the bottom of it. Unbelievably it has been too warm in upstate NY to wear the coat so I can't speak to its actual use out of doors. As to fit it is just slightly smaller than my Marmot Whitestone jacket but I think that makes for a better fit to keep me warmer in the Chelsea. I am a bigger extra small and smaller small with wide shoulders and no chest. If I went by the measurements I should be a medium-but that would have been too big. I got the Moonstruck and to my eye it is a nice shade of deep off white or perhaps a very, very pale taupe, but not white.

Finally had a chance to wear the coat in the cold. It was wonderful. Kept me warm with only a summer weight sweater underneath. The length of the coat and the fact that the zipper stops before my knees is perfect for walking in town as it keeps my legs warm warm but doesn't trip me up.

how cold? I am considering purchasing this coat, and live in Northern Canada. Need a rating of -15C to -35C

The weather in NYC has been pretty mild but I've been wearing it for a couple of weeks now and it's kept me warm so far. It looks like it is very well made and I love the fleece at the wrists. The only qualm I had is with the color of the coat. I got the coat in black but it's navy blue, not black. Lucky for me I like navy blue so I kept it. I went to a retailer than sells the Marmot and all the "black" coats were navy blue.

This Jacket Runs True to Size

Based on numerous reviews of the coat running small I ordered a size up only to find the coat too large when i finally received it. I'm 5'5", 118lbs...measurements are 33/25/35. I usually wear a size 2 or Small. I have broad shoulders and long arms so I opted for a M to accommodate for this and winter layering. The M was huge even with my thickest hooded sweatshirt on underneath. I've returned the M and am waiting for the S to arrive. I think this coat runs fairly true to least for me it did.

I can't comment on the warmth of the coat as I didn't wear the coat outdoors but I will say the coat is very lightweight and thin. So if this coat delivers and keeps you warm and looking sleek then thumbs up.

Not a good fit.

I got this coat and it's just a tad too small. It actually fits perfect if I have just a t-shirt on. Anything thicker than that, it gets snug. I ordered a Medium. I'm 5'3" 130 lbs. If I order a large then the arms are going to be too long. Bummer. I think it's a well made coat, but I had to return it.

Responded on

So glad you posted this. I am your exact size and am returning TNF Parkina in Medium because with a sweater on the sleeves are too tight. I had hoped this jacket might be a good replacement, but clearly not.

Guaranteed for Life! And better than my NorthFace!

This coat is cheaper than a Snow Goose, yet it is designed much better in my opinion and has been manufactured just as proficiently. Plus it is guaranteed for life and uses 650 fill goose down.

I received it today, 2 days after ordering it.

This is an even better coat than my calf-length down NorthFace coat - a coat I really love. The marmot coat has a classy yet more rugged shell that won't let down escape. And it won't catch and rip on the least little thing. I'm overjoyed.

I just tried the coat on, checked the great fit, the seams, the clever hood adjustments, the pockets, the zipper quality. They are all excellent. I can't the coat off, I'm so happy with it

Hi, there. Just wondering if this jacket is Style#: 77670, or the one from the previous year.

Just got mine! I love it

First let me say I went through a nightmare trying to find a coat that fit me! I tried on all the similar North Face and Columbia jackets and finally decided on this one. I live in Chicago and Toronto so having something warm, water proof and long is really important.

The reason I love this jacket is because it is so much lighter then the other but without compromising the warmth. I just wore it to walk to the pharmacy and it was perfect.

I did order a small though, I'm 5'2" and 113 ibs I carry my weight in my rear and thighs but this coat with a little roomier then I wanted, I think I may exchange it for the xs but first I'll try layering it! If you wear a lot of thick clothes stick with a small. For reference I know how hard this can be my measurements are 33,24,36 hope that can help!
