Description

Highly breathable soft shell jacket that functions as an outer shell or a layering piece.

The Marmot Men's Approach Jacket comes with ultra-breathable M3 Softshell fabric, which makes it an ideal pick for winter trekking, light-and-fast ascents, and other highly aerobic activities. When worn as an outer shell, the water-resistant exterior holds off snow or light rain, and when worn as an insulating layer under a hardshell, the Approach provides added warmth and protection from the elements. An overall stretchy feel provides plenty of mobility during technical and demanding ascents.

Is this shell zip-in compatible with Marmot jackets like the Tamarack?

The Approach softshell is not specifically part of Marmot's Zippin component system, but it may still be compatible. You could try chatting with one of the experts using the "Live Chat" link or even contacting Marmot directly since it is not listed anywhere.

I love this jacket. It works just as well as a casual layer around town as it does hiking through brush in the fall. It does pretty well holding off water, but after a while starts absorbing and gets a little heavier. It isn't a furnace when it comes to warmth, but with a good base layer underneath, I've had no problems in the 20s with 15+ mph winds. Overall, great jacket that does it's job well. My only wish would be to put the hand warmer pockets higher so that they don't get in the way of my hip belt.

Wonderful fall/winter softshell

I'm looking for a somewhat lightweight jacket for spring/fall (in New England). Seems like this jacket fits the bill just right? (BTW, I'm 5'10", ~150lbs so I'm thinking medium)

Yeah! This is a great jacket. Not super warm without layers. I'm 5'10" 140lbs and I wear a small because I like a very more athletic fit, but the medium definitely works for me as well.

I ended up getting a medium though I may swap it out for a large as it's a little snug. Not tight but it could be hard to layer under. Otherwise great jacket.

Bought the Marmot Approach to replace a MHW Offwidth softshell (cut way too short) and really prefer the Marmot. I'm 5'10" 140lbs 38" chest and the Small fit is perfect. Looking forward to using it this Spring on the MTB trails and hiking in Glacier NP. Marmot is becoming my preferred brand!

I'm 6' 145 lbs what size should I get?

Medium. Small probably wouldn't have long enough sleeves...

Don't get me wrong, I love my Marmot Softshell. I've practically worn it out its so versatile. But, looking at your build, you should look into Stoic brand products. They're clothing is sized for you tall and lean guys. I'm 6' , 200 and the Marmot large fits me great.

This is a really nice jacket, but too sleek (tight) to layer much under. Got a medium, I'm 5'9", 185#. It has a niche in my gear for milder weather, but would get a size larger for cold weather. Quality is great, and jacket looks great as well. Side pockets are interesting, as they extend all the way up the front on the inside. Maybe carry tent poles there? Great value at this price.

Go for the XL, a large might be too tight across the chest and shoulders. I'm 6' 215lbs, so we're very close in size.

I'm 6ft 5in and 225 and I got a large. I thought the xl was nice because a bit longer in sleeves, but it was so bulky around the mid section that it looked sloppy.

Nice looking jacket, a bit tight across the chest (medium usually fits me okay), fabric not very stretchy at all.

Actually picked this up on geartrade. Just received it today. Been wearing it around in drizzle and gusting winds and temps in low 40's. So far it blocks wind surprisingly well and sheds water well. It has a nice stretchy feel. Breathes great so far but haven't been doing anything strenuous. I have even left it on indoors at work and haven't been uncomfortable by wearing a jacket indoors.

Update 11/30/11: After wearing this several times I have found the wind resistance less than I thought at first. It breathes amazingly well though. It does feel somewhat stretchy but actually stretches little at all.

Weighed my XXL at 1lb 5.4oz.

I was looking for a nice thin softshell without a hood. I have a BC.com welder softshell and liked it but wanted something a little loser fit and with no hood. I would say the thickness is close with out the fleecy lining of the welder.

This fit the bill. Not too tight and fit is great. I wear an XL in most jackets and this was perfect.

If you are looking for a thick softshell to keep you warm on a frigid day this is not your jacket. But if you want somethign light for those high output days you can't beat it.

Took it on a 7 day mountaineering course in Alaska. Kept me dry and warm. Great as a windbreaker too! Very durable fabric and doesn't show mud/dirt, etc. Great product!
