Jester 16 Ski Binding

The Marker Jester 16 looks like no other alpine binding because it is like no other alpine binding. Its shorter, flatter, wider mounting footprint gives increased lateral control, improves switch riding, and concentrates the swing weight for easier spin initiation. Its compact footprint also allows the ski to flex naturally, decreasing the stiff, plate-like feel associated with high-DIN alpine bindings. Marker placed the Jester’s mounting points under the sole holder axis for direct power transmission, and gave the binding just 2mm of forward ramp angle so your boot sits almost level on the ski. These features, combined with one of the safest, most technical release mechanisms in the industry, literally enable you to seek new heights whether you’re dropping cliffs or launching out of the pipe. *Skis must be at least 76mm wide to accept wider mounting pattern.

Bottom Line: The Jester is built for pure big-mountain freestyle performance.

based on your weight there is no reason you would need a 16 din jester, I'd save the money and get the griffons.

The jesters will fit, I have some 110 brakes on my Hellbents (122 waist) so yes they will definitely fit. As far as lightest I couldn't tell you exactly the lightest pair on the market but if your looking for high performance with less weight you are definitely on the right track with the jester!

These Jesters Are No Joke

By:
November 12, 2009

Like I said in my review of my Atomic Snoop Daddies, before last season I was an OK holiday skier without much knowledge of skiing equipment. But since last November when I moved out to Utah, I have pushed myself to progress and learn as much as possible about snowsports. I think I can speak confidently for those of us who aren’t claiming to huck 20ft+ cliffs when no one else is around…

When I got my Snoops I mounted a pair of Marker Jesters on them and really let rip for the season.
Skiing in Park City I was trying everything, groomers, park, trees, switch, learning to butter, but also bailing, hitting knuckles, hitting said tress, you name it.

When I first got my skis I actually broke a pair of Rossi bindings knuckling the first jump in Jonesy’s Park in PCMR but I did exactly the same again with my Jesters and they soaked it up.

I found them to be a light binding in comparison and couldn’t believe the control I had. Quick turns, accidental bails, I felt secure in that my Jesters somehow knew I could either recover and stay on, or think; “Sorry dude, we are outta here”.

Even though the binding can go all the way up to 16, I never have mine higher than 10, and this is because I like hitting the jumps in the park. I am 6’2” and around 80kgs/180lbs and these babies are perfect, even if you think your skiing is not.

Marker Loyalist Now

By:
July 3, 2010

I used to buy Salomon bindings, then switched to rossignol. I bought the original jesters(all white, and have rode them for three years with almost no issues. The one issue I had is the little plastic plate that covers the DIN setting popped off, but not really a big deal. Changing the DIN is sanp on these especially compared to Rossis. I used to have the DIN at 15 at the end of last season, until a cornice jump mishap left with a badly sprained ankle. With a DIN that high it was def my own fault( a 15 DIN probably isnt ideal for hitting jumps). Now I keep at 12 or 13 and have never had any pre-release issues. One of the things I love about them is the easiness of clicking in. Despite snow, or slope angle they always seem pretty easy to get into, unlike Rossis. I love them and will most likley be riding Markers for a long time to come

I agree. However coming from a pair of Rossis or Salomons, the Jesters din at 9 I think is comparable to another bindings at 11. Maybe it's just me. I start the season with the DIN around 9 and work my way up. However I think that for myself in March that a 12 or 13 din works pretty well.

Careful... I keep mine at a 8 or 9. If you're meant to come out, you're meant to come out. In case anyone else is reading this thinking more is better - not the case on DIN. If at all unsure - take your skis to a respected shop and discuss your skiing style before having them adjust your bindings for you.

More Confident Than Ever

By:
July 12, 2010

I just to be scared to death to even make a hard turn on my old bindings, now I'm more confident than ever. Even when just clicking in you hear a big snap and you know you're ready to go. I landed a 540 very very nose heavy and before probably would have double ejected and slammed my face. But my marker bindings allowed me to stay on my skis and actually made it look like a huge butter out of my landing. The ride height is a little high. My only complaint is that it is difficult to clip into the bindings when it is at an angle, so if you fall on a steep slope it may be a little hard to get your skis back on.

God Amongst Mortals

The be all of end all for front country ski bindings, period. These babies have no weakpoints. Stupid strong mounting pattern, super secure yet will not fail to pop out in any emergency, no weird switch skiing moments due to no ramp angles, amazingly powerful due to wide baseplates (why yes I'd love to make boot out carves on 100mm waist skis on bulletproof ice thank you), and a DIN scale that will stay with you no matter how big your going.

I ski them on a pair of 185 Volkl Bridges mounted 2cm forward of boot center for an east coast do everything ski, and they &*&^ing rule. I have had 0 maintance issues, 0 problems, and unlimited smiles while skiing these over 60 days a year for the past two seasons. These are the new standard of front country bidings.

If your not as big or as powerful, go for the griffons. Same binding with a lighter spring.

Depends on the buck you want to spend, and the DIN you are looking for. If you are a big dude, or ski really aggressive or fast, and set yours up higher than 11 or 12, get something in the 14 (Look PX 14 is a nice one) or or 16 (this) range. If you ride at an 8 set, are on a budget or dont fit the fast/large/aggressive category, get something that has a smaller set, like the Look Px 12 or even the Salomon.

YUUUUUP

By:
January 21, 2010

Pretty awesome looking bindings. I have them mounted on 185 Volkl Kuro's. No pop out issues, have been doing some jumps but not super big.

One issue that lead to me giving them 4 stars versus 5 was that after skiing them for the first two days on my Kuro's the backplate came loose on both skis. Took them back to the shop where they were mounted and the owner put some screw retainers on both back screws of both back plates. They are very solid now. Most likely an issue with the original tech not tightening them enough, but the owner commented that he has seen this problem before on a pair of rockered Armadas in which the whole back plate came of with some Baron bindings. Just thought I would throw this out there to see if anyone has had similar issues.

Overall a very bomber binding. I don't see any future problems coming up. Great looking and preforming on my Volkl Kuro's!

I had the same thing happen four days after I had new Jesters mounted to Nordica Enforcers. The right rear binding is wiggling and you can see 2-3 mm of daylight between it and the ski.... and on top of that the bindings never seem to release. I backed the ski-shop set dins back to an 8 to try not to kill myself. ( I weigh 170, and am 5'9") I am not impressed I should have bought LOOKs or Salomon. I think these Jesters suck.

Hey cmelo, if you are looking to tour in the backcountry with your new EP Pros you should get the Duke. If you're going to be using your new skis mostly at resorts then stick with the Jester. Same DIN range, much lighter. Dukes can break, it's true but rare. Know that both Backcountry.com and Marker have a great return and warranty policy so you're covered in case of a rare but possible busted-binding scenario.

Awesome Bindings

By:
January 17, 2010

I setup my Atomic Bent Chetlers (pro model only- 183cm length, 123mm waist) with a pair of Marker Jesters. I'm a strong, aggressive skier who charges hard. IMO, these are arguably the best bindings for Big Mountain Freeride. The compact design makes the bindings relatively light, and allows the ski to flex to its full potential. This translates into better turning and overall control. Steeping into the binding is very reassuring, with an exceptional feeling of toe and heel hold. This really inspires confidence when you start hucking some larger obstacles.

Awesome Binder

By: Backcountry.com Employee
November 1, 2010

I've got a set of these mounted on Armada ARV's and I love them! ARV is supposed to be all mountain ski, but I use it more for freeride/park skiing. These bindings are tough! They are made to handle harsh impacts, and gnarly crashes. DIN 16 is also really nice for someone my size (210 lbs), because I hate popping out of my bindings mid air, or on a backseat landing. If you want a solid and somewhat lightweight pair of bindings for anything from park skiing to 40+ footers in the pow, get these!

I realize at this DIN I could go with the griffons/barons, which is something that you might want to check out. But I don't mind a little extra weight for a more beefy binding. I can't speak for the Armada's. I have Jester's mounted on my Gotama's and its my favorite setup in my closet full of ski's. One thing to note on my Jester's - the heel was pre-releasing and had to be set 2 Dins higher [12] than the toes [10] to release at the same pressure. So if you get them I'd make sure the shop that mounts them test's them out for you.

Marker spot on with Jester

By: Backcountry.com Employee
March 19, 2010

Been using this binding on a pair of Gotama's and Wall's. The walls for a year now the goats for about a month or so. I've been thoroughly pleased with both set ups. I'm 5' 11" 170, ski aggresively. I'm not a fan of cranking my DIN way up high. I'm running a DIN of 8 on my walls and 9 on the gotama's. I've never had a problem releasing with either ski. On the walls I can hit 65-70ft jumps landing switch with no worries. The gotama's I can charge as hard as I want, and haven't had any problems releasing.

The only complaint I have is putting the binding on in deep snow can be a pain since it takes alot to kick the heel up. A small complaint and it's like that because of the big spring marker uses and it gives the binding great heel retention. Way rather have a binding that's a bit difficult to enter that I can trust will hold me in the the other way around.

Marker Jester vs. STH 16? I am strong skier who usually has the DIN around 10. I ski all over the mountain in all conditions. Which is the better choice and which is more lightweight? Also, besides the DIN range, are there any big differences between Jesters and Griffons?

If you run your DIN only up to 10, there is no need to pay the extra cash for the 16 DIN bindings, which also tend to be heavier than lower DIN bindings. I would recomend the Griffon, which is a bit lighter (1900gr vs 2100gr) than the STH12 and the STH14 (2050gr). Besides the weight I recomend Marker because I've always had issues with salomon's toe pieces; they either break or the wings need to be constantly readjusted. If you do a lot of switch riding and landings go with the Griffons, if not, you can always find Salomon's Z12Ti from last year which is not only really light (1700gr), but also less than 200$!

Adequate for the job

By: Backcountry.com Employee
May 25, 2010

This binding literally does not compare to the Rossignol FKS 180 or Look Pivot 18 bindings...in fact, I would still prefer about 6 other bindings to this one. That is not to say that this binding is horrible, it is adequate for the job, but I would hate to spend $395.00 on a binding that lacks some of the key features I love in those aforementioned fixations.

What don't I like about this binding?

1. How high it sits off of the ski
2. How long the rear base plate is
3. No height adjustment on the toe (which isn't necessary with all bindings, but this one has such a large natural gap that it is a problem)
4. They claim it is the widest binding out there, it might have the widest plastic under the binding, but not a wider hole pattern.
5. Binding Elasticity is horrible...yeah, it might be the safest binding in the world (if you are talking about how quickly it releases), but that gives you literally no time to recover, which can actually make the binding more dangerous.
6. No pivot feature makes the release feel less natural
7 Toe piece has too many parts.
8. To much plastic

What I do like about the binding.

1. It is a binding.
2. 16 DIN (you need it with how crappy the elasticity is)
3. Low weight compared to many bindings.
4. Short toe piece keeps the ski flex around the toe area somewhat natural(although it is still too high off the ski).
5. Screws are far apart so you don't pull the binding out of the ski easily.

All in all, don't believe the hype..just get Pivot/FKS bindings and be done with it!

ive got griffons on my Kung Fujas's and they are solid. Ive got more than 90 days on them, ripped the heel pieces outta both skis, and they are still going strong. even though theyre plastic, the vital parts are metal and solid like Lukas mentioned. best binder ever for skis ovver 87mm under foot

I have a pair of the marker griffons on my armada t-halls and just love them. Super durable and not flimsy. I have already over 50 days on my griffons and still as good as new. Even though there is a fair amount of plastic the important parts are metal. When you click into them they fell really solid.

Most people will just bend them a little to accommodate the larger waist.

I am going to get the K2 Hellbents, and it said that these would be the best bindings for them. Are there any that would fit the 122 mm waist and be a little bit cheaper but just as good of quality?

Jesters are the way to go...if you arent gonna be charging super hard the griffons might also work fine. But if you want something with a din of above 12 the jester is prolly the best option. As for price...look around for a pair from last year...they didnt change anything but the color, or at most insignificant things.

I like the Look PX line quite a lot, good reliable bindings, and a bit cheaper than the Marker Royal family. Mostly though, nothing quite compares to the Royals. You can get the PX 18 which has a higher DIN set, for cheaper, but they are long, so the flex is hindered, and they weigh a ton. Take a look if it interests you, but the Jester is probably the best.

I think you can get brakes for these at about the 130mm area, but it doesn't really matter. Bending the brakes is the best, cheapest bet. Any good ski shop should be able to do this, or you can do it yourself.

These bindings are great for all mountain. I have them mounted on my 166 K2 Extremes, and theyre an excellent all mountain binding. No early releases and no embarassing double ejections on the mountain. Solid all around Binding

The Jesters are constantly used as a Big Mountain, Park & Pipe binding by high quality skiers. They are a very stable, consistent all-round binding.

I was reading that the 2007 version of the Jester had issues with compatibility with the Dalbello Krypton shell and inadvertant release. Does anyone know if this newer version would be compatible with Dalbello Krypton Rampage boots?

The issue is that the jester (unlike the duke) does not have a toe height adjustment. So for boots like the dalbello krypton series boots which have a slightly lower profile sole, there is tiny little gap in the toe, which allows for some play and at times premature release. You just have to make the sure that the forward pressure is set perfectly. So make sure you take it to a reputable shop when you get them mounted and set. As far as changes, they are some minor changes, but nothing with regard to this issue. The changes are mostly cosmetic. I use the dalbello krypton pros, and with the exception of touring bindings, I use some variation of Salomon 916s on all my skis, and have never had any trouble. I would go with the sth16s personally. They have an all metal heel, and I think overall, they are more bomber (less plasticy), and less prone to issues with fit and pre-release. There's a reason, they've stuck with pretty much the same format for over a decade. It works! And it works well.

DIN is DIN... the standard tab size, dimension, and durometer has a very small tolerance for the DIN spec and regulations for adult ski boots. The forward pressure indicator was a bit different than on bindings preceding it, and that was probably the hang-up people mis-named. This binding is awesome.

Hello, I had the same kind of problems with the heel part of a 2007 Duke Binding with my Dalbello Krypton pros until I augmetnted the forward pressure of the heel in a way the heel of my shoe is really locked, seems to need a lot of forward prssure? are there any changes in the 2009/10 Marker Jester/Duke heel part? I'm thinking abôut putting a Jester on my new skis for this year but this issue is a bit of a problem. Perhaps a Salomon STH 16 would be more reliable? Had no problems with Salomon Bindings an the Dalbello shoes.

Any opinions?

Greetings from Switzerland
