Disappointing details.

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

I was ready to like these, fit great at home. But on the trail it was soon obvious that the tongue is lacking. Laces cross over the tongue at the ankle where there is no padding or leather (just some flimsy nylon). A few mile of this and OUCH! I tried the men's version of this boot, but it had a problem with a speed-lace rivet digging into my ankle bone. Mammut boots fit my feet great, but they seem to have trouble with lacing details.

Excellent boots

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought these boots for an upcoming mountain climbing activity. From the time I put them on in the store they felt comfortable. I went out today and was very impressed with them. These are sturdy boots supplying great support to the ankles over rocky and hilly terrain. Looking forward to using them often.

great non-gortex hiking boot

I've had it with GTX hiking boots leaking after two seasons (I was told the GTX liner inside the boot cracks with wear) and being incredibly hot, while friends with old-fashioned leather hiking boots swear by their comfort and--believe it or not--waterproofing (if you apply the correct stuff to the leather). But I was told I'd have to go to Europe to buy true leather hiking boots, and Raichle was unanimously recommended as the way to go. It took me awhile to realize that Mammut now owns Raichle, and that, whoopee!, was the only place I could find this boot. Backcountry's return policy was very helpful on fitting. I have a wide, small foot that is hard to fit. I was able to try a few different sizes to determine that the US size 6.5 was best for me (I usually have to go to size 7 or 7.5 to get width). The interiors of this boot are line with a cushioned soft leather that is very breathable. I use Nikwax products to wash and waterproof. Durable and waterproof on the trail, they feel like slippers in camp. I just hope they're still making these when mine wear out!!
