Whether your weekend plans include a multi-pitch climb or a backcountry tour, the Mammut Ultimate Hooded Softshell Jacket features WindStopper fabric to block wind, expel excess heat, and shed light rain or snow.
Enhanced WindStopper material blocks ridgeline gusts, breathes well during your ascent, and sheds light rain and snow
DWR coating encourages water and melting snow to bead up on the fabric's surface without affecting the garment's overall breathability
Full-length underarm vents lend airflow and increase evaporation when you work up a sweat
Articulated elbows mimic the normal anatomical shape of your arms and provide greater freedom of movement
Thumb loops prevent the sleeves from riding up your arms
Bottom Line: Versatile jacket to open up the possibilities.
This is a great jacket! I used it extensively this last winter as my back country skiing/ski mountaineering jacket. The features that set it apart from other jackets are it's ability to dump heat and moisture on the up track. I tend to run hot and moisture management can become a problem especially when there is some kind of precipitation. This is the best jacket that I have found that keeps me comfortable and not clammy when skiing uphill while it is snowing. The "pit zips" go from the elbow to the hem at the waist and the arms are articulated so you can climb in the jacket and is stays tucked into your harness. The thumb loops are also a nice feature that I find my self using alot
The newer version has some spots like the elbows which have some dimpled material which is more abrasion resistant. Other then that they are quite similar.
This is my first Mammut purchase (although not my first softshell) and I am extremely impressed. The Quality is top notch. The DWR has held up very well for me and it still beads up quite well even on the shoulders after wearing a pack with it frequently. The softshell is very soft and it's warm for what it is. Although BackCountry lists the seams as taped they are not. And I'm not aware of a Windstopper softshell that is. In fact the retailer I picked mine up from (at 50% off) told me Gore does not like manufacturers to tape the seams on windstopper products as they don't guarantee the waterproof on them. Not sure how accurate that is but I thought I would pass it along. Still without seam tape I haven't gotten wet in it, and I have used it disc golfing in a fairly heavy downpour for 3+ hours while carrying a backpack. The fabric on the shoulders under the straps was wet towards the end but I was dry on the inside. Also I have yet to feel wind through the fabric even sticking my arm out the window at 80mph for example. So the laminate definitely does its job. My only gripes are minor 1. The two way zipper can be a pain line up when putting the jacket on, and 2. The side zippers (which allow you to unzip it up to the bicep like a poncho) don't have anything to keep them completely closed so they will open just barely. Like I said just a gripe nothing serious. The addition of the thumb loop is very nice to keep your hands somewhat warm/shielded. And the length of the arms is perfect so that even when taking advantage of the thumb loops the arms don't pull to tight or become uncomfortable. Mammut has an excellent warranty and I have yet to see any reason I'll need it. In closing I'll definitely be purchasing more Mammut products in future and if they do a significant revision of this jacket I'll buy another one.

Overall, a good jacket. I'm 5.8, 150, the medium is fine, jut a little oversize, but perfect to fit a couple of layers underneath. It is light, wind proof and water resistant, wore it with one base layer and a sweater on a really cold day in the mountains ( single digits). This was rather surprising, bacuse it's not insulated. You'll have to be moving around pretty intensely, however, it's not made for standing around for too long. Also OK to wear as a regular jacket/windbraker in the city, since it's pretty neat and low profile. One problem though: the inside pocket ripped up, right across the stitch. I had my car keys in it and thought I'd lost them. This is not good, especially from Mammut! I've had cheaper, no name jackets that held up forever! I ended up finding the keys in a side pocket, where they fell into, through the hole in the stitch (these two pockets were only separated by that one line of stitch that tore up) so the two pockets are now one..
To sum up, it's nice and stylish, and the material is top quality.. but what's up with that stitching job, Mammut??
This is one of my favorite jackets - it keeps me warm while keeping the cold wind out and cool in a warm rain. Thing is, during this rain, it can show the weakness of its water resistance. I was outside in a heavy downpour for 5 minutes with wind, and my elbows started to get wet, and then the water started to get through everywhere.
HOWEVER, I still love the jacket. And it does say "water resistant in light rain" in the description. So, that's my own issue for not reading and having unrealistic expectations. I just wanted to let anyone else looking at this jacket to know this :)
I would recommend to a friend, and will buy from them again!
Yep, softshells won't hold up to heavy rain like a true waterproof-breathable shell would. But by that same property of softshell jackets (ie, not being waterproof), they breath much better than any WPB shell would, while still providing decent protection from the elements (wind, snow, light rain).
Softshells are generally a great option as an outer layer for high output activities in winter (ie, ice climbing, snowshoeing, skiing), where you can layer highly breathable insulation (think high loft fleeces like an R3 or R4) underneath and don't need to worry about wind robbing you of body heat.
Hey, I am just about 1in shorter than you and about the same weight. The XL fits me rite with enough space to wear a long sleeve and move freely. I tried the Large one and found it to be a bit too snug.
I'm 6'2" 187lbs and the Large fits perfectly. I have just enough room under the jacket to fit a base layer. The sleeves are just right too. Not overly long like some have described. Of course, everyone is different and what woorks for me might not work for you. I'm slim, with long arms and broad shoulders, and again, this jacket fits me to a T. Cheers Backcountry for all your help! I'm glad I didnt get that medium!
Top quality in every respect. I wear it as a mid layer, as an outer shell and just bumming around town.
Great features, cuts the wind and breathes like crazy for high intensity backcountry pursuits. Full length pit zips are easy to use.
Sheds light snow and drizzle.
If I had to find one knock its that it doesn't have a chest pocket otherwise it integrates well with my Nordwand jacket and works well on its own as a shell down to about minus 10C.
In low light it looks black. In direct sunlight it has a dark purple sheen to it. (hence the name of the color called prune - just like the fruit!) Hope this helps?
this is a great all purpose jacket. i wear it running, cycling, spring skiing, and to the bar. it is very comfortable. regualr fit. sold all my other non-skiing softshells!
