With wind-shedding fleece in the body and breathable stretch fleece under the arms, the Mammut Men's Outline Fleece Jacket provides contoured warmth and protection for alpine or casual conditions. The smooth face layers easily while the plush interior fleece keeps things toasty.
Bottom Line: Zip up the Mammut Outline Jacket for casual style and wind-resistant warmth.
This fleece is great for any cold Spring or Autumn day paired with a T-Shirt. In the winter you can pair it with a insulated soft shell or hard shell or insulating layer and you will be in comfort. It is standard waffle fleece and holds up well to abuse without experiencing piling or noticeable fraying. It doesn't love being abraded against stone, although it did survive rappelling in sand stone without tearing and only minimal piling of the fleece. Other than that, it has held up to everything I have thrown at it. I am 6'1" and 195 pounds with an athletic build and it fits great across the shoulders with enough room around the waist that it isn't constricting. You won't regret this purchase.
I'm gonna have to disagree with the warm in the wind comment, it's wind resistant, but if you live in a windy place, and live there during the winter, this should not be your outer layer. Maybe in the fall though, and if it's not too windy, it's outrageously warm.. outrageously. So outrageously that I was sweating after the first 5 minutes wearing it indoors. It also looks really cool. As cool as it is, though, I think a half-zip hooded or hoodless pullover would be more practical for the targeted "recommended uses". I also wouldn't call it a mountaineering top - the pockets are right where your backpack straps would go, lol. Overall sick looking top, a little impractical, very warm and fleecy.
I got this jacket off SAC for a pretty good deal thinking it would replace an old softshell, not so at all. Its proven to be a nice warm sweatshirt like garment. Just a more fashionable and mature version of a hoody. I wear it inside all the time or under a shell when when I'm walking around town, but its not windproof enough to be an outer layer in any outdoor situation I would be in, nor as breathable / lightweight as say a polartec power stretch garment. Given its lack of technical features I think you should steer clear of this garment at full price. But if you can snag it up at a deal and you're in the market for a super comfy good looking around town garment, this is the jacket for you.

This was my first Mammut clothing purchase. I was happy to see that the attention to detail is wonderful! The smooth material on the outside does help shed very light rain but only slightly better than your average fleece jacket. The weave of the material is not tight enough to block wind anymore than a normal fleece. The material on the inside is the softest fleece I have ever felt. The hood looks dumb when it is pulled up but works great (function>fashion). I am 6'2" and 175 lbs. I ordered the large and it fits well. It has a better athletic cut around the stomach than most of my other jackets. I would have loved to see an inch or two more of length at the waist and this is the only reason why I gave it a 4/5.
My friend and I were up on a mulipitch climb (on Devil's Tower) and it was pretty chilly and windy. He let me borrow his Outline Jacket on my belay shifts-- and it was GREAT! For something about as heavy and comfortable as a cotton hoody, this has amazing warming powers! And it's really comfortable, too. After using his, I got my own (women's version) and use it all the time. The **wind-resistant** aspect is really key and makes it a great piece to bring on long climbs, hikes, whatever!
I love wearing this around the house or out of doors. Very comfortable, technical, and damn good looking, too! I wish, however, they made this same jacket without the hoodie or as a zip-neck pullover. This is a well made garment.
So now that I've had this a garment a couple months I can start to detect the qualities...it's is comfortable to be sure, and it is stylish, but the zipper comes undone from time-to-time, and now I am noting some balling of the material from mini-snags or simple wear and tear where the synthetic material is pulling from the main fabric.
I've worn this around the house and in my car driving around town but not on a trail and while only small balling of material I thought it a bit weak to see this so soon in the ownership. I believe it's been in the washer/dryer once or twice...
I have a few other Mammut garments and they are top quality so I was curious to find these two flaws.
First Mammut purchase I've made as well, and it won't be the last. The fit is excellent and slimmer than most companies out there. I am 6'3" and a very athletic 205 and the XL is just about perfect. To be 100% perfect, the shoulders could be a little wider, but the stretch of the fabric and the raglan sleeves make this a non-issue. A little more length wouldn't hurt either, but its no where close to too short either. The smooth face of the fabric will bead light moisture and it does cut the wind a little bit as well. The hood makes you look like an olympic speed-skater, haha.
