Why We Like The Mammut Nordwand Pro HS Hooded Jacket

Big mountain ascents call for a jacket with big features and even bigger protection. Enter the Mammut Nordwand Pro HS Hooded Jacket, a top-tier jacket designed specifically for mountaineering that puts together the toughest fabrics, ergonomic features, and a quality construction to keep us comfortable and protected from the elements as we are scaling the tallest peaks. First u\p, a GORE-TEX Pro 3-layer fabric to seal out all moisture and snow while still allowing our body to breathe as we are pushing it up to the summit. Harness-compatible front pockets allow us to keep our essentials close to the body while hooked into our fixed rope and a zippered chest pocket and internal security pockets ensure our valuables stay safe and protected. Underarm zippered vents allow us to dump excess heat if we are getting too hot, and one-hand adjustable drawstring cords allow us to cinch up the jacket at the hood and hem to block out the cold wind and air. No matter whether we are scaling our local hometown mountains or out on Denali or in the Himalayas on an extended expedition, the Nordwand Pro HS Hooded Jacket is one of our top choices for performance and coverage.

Quality Jacket with Querks

Like the jacket. Bought a man's XL in the nighttime color that I thought looked black. The material is stiff and will likely hold up to abrasions. Sleeves are long and the cuffs are deep with wide Velcro. There are plenty of external and internal pockets. The jacket fit is slim compared to most companies. The Nightime color is actually dark blue and not black, but is a nice color. There are Marmot logos on nearly every side of the jacket, with a larger one in the middle of the back. The main zipper is left handed and not right handed.

pretty much perfect in every way

I've taken this jacket downhill skiing, on a winter hike through frozen waterfalls in a valley, and on multi pitch ice climbs, and it performed perfectly across the board. The velcro sleeve straps work perfect, the pit-zips are essential and are big enough to really cool off when you need it, it's SUPER durable (I've already taken a fall or two in it). During the one climb, it started pouring rain, and by the time we rapped down, it had rained so hard that a decent portion of the ice was gone, and I stayed BONE DRY. The hood fit's perfectly with and without a helmet (somehow). My only two complaints (and they''re minor at best) are 1: that the pit zips are a bit difficult to re-zip while wearing the jacket, but that's a bit of a testament to their durability, as I feel you need to sacrifice some easy with durability. and 2: The size seems to be a little bit bigger than the rest of the Mammut products that I own. It's not the end of the world for me, as it leaves room for more layers underneath, if need be. I got the XXL as I'm about 6'3", and between 230-240 (not much extra padding). I can't expect every article of clothing to fit like a tailored suit to a guy with a build like an NFL player, but it's a bit wide around the mid section. You can adjust this with your harness, the pull strings and the other features, so again, this is more of a nitpick than anything else. Other than the fact that it wasn't tailored to fit people with the build of an NFL player and the pit zips are too durable to easily zip up while wearing, I'd say this is legitimately the perfect all mountain/alpine hardshell (in my limited experience). I cannot recommend this enough. It's great! I'm a HUGE HUGE fan of this jacket.

Well worth it

This is a superb ski jacket. I wore it skiing and stayed dry. I had as many pockets as I needed and despite the snow fall, stayed warm and dry.

American sizing review

I love this jacket so much and highly recommend it. This is a nice upgrade over the Haldigrat HS (forced to replace after that jacket was stolen), thanks largely to the stretchy back material and better internal pockets. If you are familiar with Mammut sizing, this jacket fits as expected. I struggle with the Mammut performance fit as my torso and arm length fit Medium perfectly, but my shoulders and chest fit Large perfectly. I am 6'0", 180lb (endurance athlete but I also rep 225 on bench); My Haldigrat (size Large) was too long and bunched up, this (size Medium) fits perfectly but is a little snug when reaching my arms forward. I can still fit a base layer and medium-thickness down jacket (Mammut Broad Peak IN Hooded Jacket) underneath comfortably. If you're close to my description and are struggling between medium or large, I'm happier with Medium, fwiw.

Fully equipped outer layer

Material is softer and more packable than the 2020 Nordwand Advanced HS. I'm 6'0" 185lbs. Large is perfect to layer over puffy and mid layers. Not too bulky to wear as a single layer with no mid layer. Vented under arms and enough pockets on interior and exterior to effectively manage backcountry or resort needs. Not ideal if you need packable layer to consume small volume. The Goretex Pro material will not pack tight and compact like lighter weight membrane. If a bomb proof and fully featured jacket is what you're looking for this is a suitable option. I like the tailored for through arms and chest. I have not used in technical situations yet, but the tailoring gives me confidence the jacket will not cause restrictions.

Top of the top of the line hard shell

This is the best and most versatile hard shell I've ever had. The fit is perfect. It's somehow comfortable both as a shell while wearing a tee shirt on a rainy 55° day, and with a puffy and base layer under it while sauntering through the woods or doing a bit of backcountry snowboarding. While I do climb some, I'm no alpine climber. I got this because I want the range of motion and comfort while being in the back country. Knowing this is made for the deep backcountry alpine climber, I figured it would be up to whatever mountain I would try. 10/10, would recommend.

Great jacket at a great deal

I've used it mostly as a rain jacket, and I haven't overheated yet with the armpit vents open. I am so excited to use it this winter. It is so good at temperature control

In the category of shells, it doesn't get any better! You will not be disappointed. Among the many features, there's a properly sized under-arm zippered vent!!! Clearly alot of design thought and testing has gone into this shell.

Love love love this jacket! I'm highly visible, which makes it easy for my group to see me, especially if I go into the trees. Additionally the pockets are super bomber! I'm able to access everything except for the chest strap without finagling around. The chest pocket sits right over my chest strap, but that's OK. Occasionally I mistake my pit zip pockets for the side pockets when I'm trying to open pockets, but that only happens when I'm wearing goggles and thick gloves, since goggles obstruct my view when looking down and gloves affect my proprioception. With pit zips... they're a little hard to unzip all the way unless you grab the sleeve, but having dual zippers make this easier as I can position the zippers in a way that makes it easy to open. I've read reviews that said that the mesh pockets are too small for climbing skins; I haven't had this issue. I do roll up my skins (and they get a little bulky) so that they they are stashable inside the mesh pockets. I love the wind protection on this! I ski in the rockies with weather around 15 degrees F, and I can ski in a base layer with this jacket. When there are high winds (30+ MPH), I feel unaffected!

Great Shell

Super impressed with all the technical features of this shell. All of the pockets are well designed and the armpit vents are huge for dumping heat. I paired this shell with Hestra Fall Line 3 finger gloves and figured I would have to cinch down the wrists to keep snow out. That is not the case! I skied in Utah with 5' of fresh pow over 3 days and the cuff mostly kept the snow out fully open. Any snow that did get in was easily shaken out with the material folded into the inside of the cuff. Will report back on the durability of the material.
