One Softshell to Rule Them All

By:
April 4, 2010

I first ran in to the Laser Jacket a year and a half ago in a local gear shop. At the time I was totally smitten with the jacket, but couldn't justify the price tag (it's notoriously expensive). A year later I found myself still drooling over the Laser and decided to take the plunge. Three words: Best plunge ever.

I actually sold my Mountain Hardwear Dragon Jacket, just so I could fit this thing into my wardrobe. That was probably the easiest decision I've ever made. As has been said, the fabric is what makes this jacket stand out. It's windproof, sheds water like crazy, and is damn near waterproof. The jacket is actually made with a waterproof fabric (Schoeller WB-400), but the seams are not sealed. Thus the jacket gets an overall rating of "water-resistant".

The hood is big enough for any helmet known to man. The pockets will fit your PowerBar, ATC, gloves, or simply double as vents. I have had no sizing issues. I'm 5'11", 175 lbs and the medium fits like a dream.

If you're looking for a simple, windproof softshell with alpine pockets and a hood then this is your jacket. You simply don't need to look any further. In my opinion climbing softshells don't get better than the Mammut Laser. Not yet at least. This jacket is totally awesome approved.

Killer jacket from a company that knows whats up. Basic design that works really well. Great hood, high and protective collar. Pockets are up high so you can still use them while wearing a harness. Nice trim fit but roomy enough for layering and unrestrictive for climbing. The fabric is very breathable, soft on the inside and nearly waterproof. Awesome jacket

Does anyone know if this product has been discontinued by mammut for next year? Their website does not have this jacket on it. It seems to be a great product and there are none left in my size seemingly anywhere.

James,

This jacket is discontinued. You might want to try this jacket from Mammut.

Love this jacket!

By:

This is the most versatile soft shell jacket I have ever owned. I love the soft, stretchy feel of the Schoeller fabric and the wind/water excellency is excellent. This has become my daily go-to layer for skiing on and off piste as well as for ice climbing.

Great fabric. Good fit...except for the arm length.

By:
March 31, 2010

Love my laser and agree with all the positive comments about the fabric. The fit is something to consider if you're slightly tall for your weight with long arms.

I'm 6'1", 175, w/a 40" chest. The 'body' of large fits perfectly as far as the circumference goes. It's a tad shorter than I'd like but it works and stays put under a harness. However, if you have a slightly positive ape index (I usually wear a 34/35" dress shirt), the sleeves may be too short to use the gaiters. I tried using them when climbing and the thumb loop was tight enough in between my thumb and index finger that it cut off circulation and caused those two digits to go numb. That's not cool when you're gripped, trying to place an ice screw. And, if you don't use them, it's surprising how much wind comes in through that little thumb hole.

So, if you're in between two sizes and have long arms, you may want to consider sizing up.

I have two questions. I too am concerned about the arm length question - there seems to be mixed reviews on the actual length of the sleeves. I am 6'2" ~178lbs, 41.5" chest, and usually have a 35" sleeve in dress shirts. I really am not too crazy about upsizing to an XL to get long enough sleeves; but am willing to do it if necessary. Any recent experiences on the current incarnation of this jacket and sleeve length. Second-question - would this jacket truly be too heavy-duty for backcountry skiing? If it is, I might still consider it for lift-served skiing in the PNW.

It's all in the Fabric

By:
January 19, 2010

I have a few different softshells most of them are made with Polartec Power Shield which makes for a great softshell. But, Schoeller WB-400 with dryskin and a Nanoshpere coating make for something even better. Very durable very warm, this really is a cold weather only soft shell. I wore it on a hike in 18 degree weather with a light base layer and an icebreaker 260 underneath and actually overheated and had to shed a layer. I am 6'4" 220 and went with the XL. It is a very fitted piece that makes it just past the waistline. Get one.

Best softshell I've found...

By:
October 29, 2009

Ok, so I'm a regular on SAC and Tramdock and am always looking for the perfect jackets for various wintertime activities. I picked up several jackets last year and this remains my go-to jacket for anything aerobic. It breathes like a champ, but retains enough warmth that it can be used around town too. Plus it just looks hella good. It's just water-resistant enough to shed most anything you'll encounter touring. I'm not sure I'd trust this in a really heavy-wet snowfall, but for typical wasatch powder, this is all you'll need. Haven't tried this jacket with a helmet, but it seems like it would accomodate one, albeit a bit snug. I'm 6'0 and about 200 lbs and the large fits perfect. It's an athletic cut, but allows adequate room for light layering. Used this on a day about -10 degrees F and had an UnderArmour Cold Gear base with an Icebreaker 220 and was perfect. Love it!

Anybody have any information that would render the Arc'teryx Venta SV jacket inferior to the Laser? or the other way around? Thanks.

The Laser is made using Schoeller's Nanosphere Technology which is a coating that gives it a really sweet surface that sheds dirt and water far better than anything on the market. The dryskin extreme wicks exceptionally well and even though it does not say it above I believe the Laser is still made with Schoeller's WB-400 softshell which is crazy durable. The Venta uses Windstopper which will block wind a bit better but otherwise material wise the Laser wins.

The Venta has pit zips, the Laser does not, although it does have two front pockets that can be used to vent (they work well for me at least)

Arcteryx has cool cuts or fits to their clothing but they have fallen behind on materials (they only use polartec and goretex) Now I mainly buy packs from them when they go on sale but nothing else. As far as jackets go anything from Mammut or Westcomb, or even some Marmot stuff will be better. Westcomb and Mammut are the only two companies really pushing the limits with new textiles and fabrics (such as eVent, C-Change, etc). Hope this helped you some.

Well, Arc'teryx is mostly Chinese made now. So, paying the exorbitant prices for stuff no longer made in Canada seems ridiculous to me. Hope this helps.

Exquisite fabrics and surely one of the best softshell jackets Mammut has ever made

By:
December 20, 2009

I tried this softshell jacket in "Eiselin Sport" shop, in Luzern, Switzerland. All I can say is: What a fabulous jacket !!! Its fabrics are really something extraordinary. Both outer one, as well as its inner fleece lining. Outer material mixture looks and feels noble ! Fleece lining warms you immediately - this softshell is meant for cold wheather ! Its cut and shape are athletic but loose enough to have a layer underneath. Sleeves are long enough for my size (size S). Thumb loops are always great idea. Side pockets are easily reachable (even though I would prefer them to be a bit smaller). Its front zip enables buttom-up unzipping when you have to reach for your carabiner. Colour Fire is meltingly attractive ! Of course, it is (absoloutely) wind and water proof. Well, it probably is not meant for heavy downpour, but shall keep you dry !The only drawback is its hood: far too big to be useful without a helmet. All in all my favourite softshell for cold environment ! Exquisite fabrics and surely one of the best softshell jackets Mammut has ever made !
PS. It's price in Switzerland is notorious !!!

Oustanding

By:

One of my favorite pieces. Big plusses are:
+ very breathable
+ Extremely tough - almost like a leather jacket for abrasion resistance
+ very windproof
+ Athletic fit with stretch for range of motion
+ great looking
Only drawback is you have to be careful with the zipper - I blew mine out on my first one in a year, but Mammut replaced it no problem.

No, the hood can not be tucked away. It is fixed. And, yes, it is rather oversized. True, it could be made to stay tight, but nevertheless it is far too big to be used without a helmet. Apart from that, it really is a very special softshell. Noble material, warm lining, nice athletic cut, supple and nimble, so smooth on touch, so attractive to look. One of the best Mammut ever made !

One Rad Softshell

By:
December 4, 2009

Love Mammut, they never disapoint. Replaced a 6 or 7 year old Mammut Softshell that was still good but I wanted something new. This thing is sick. Ice climbed in real wet conditions and stayed totally dry. Shouldering my tools for a free hand left not a mark when the pick rubbed the fabric. Super cozy fleece on the inside and windproof. Just about perfect. Can't think of anything else I'd want except a lower price but well made and worth it. I know this will last many years likemy last Mammut Jacket

Functional, Simple, Stylish

By:
December 28, 2009

The jacket does what it says..., blocks wind and most moisture. I have used it skiing in two heavy, wet, Sierra snow days with near white out conditions and did not get wet. Heavy rain may be another story. The construction is solid and it is a nice looking jacket. The hood is great for a ski helmet but would not fit a normal person's head. Also, the hood tighteners are not easy to use. Overall, a bit pricey but worth it for a quality jacket. And the Mammut lifetime gaurantee is nice.

I read a review (elsewhere) of the Laser jacket in which the reviewer complained that the sleeves are a little on the short side. I'm 6'2'' with long arms, so short sleeves are a deal-breaker for me. (I like a close fit, so I don't want to size up just to get longer sleeves.) Thoughts? I'd love a second opinion...

I just received a 2010 version of the Laser - size large. I'm 6'4" with a 35" sleeve length. I also own a few Arcteryx softshell pieces. I would say that relatively speaking the Mammut Laser fits longer in the arms similar to Arcteryx - not shorter. The piece fits perfectly in my opinion. Sleeve length is more than sufficient. Body is fitted yet can layer underneath. Torso length hits right below my belt but above my backside. Hope that helps.

I'm 6'1" w/slightly long arms. I have a large Laser softshell. A medium would have fit in the chest and shoulders but the torso wasn't quite long enough.

The sleeves are long enough for me unless I want to actually use the gaitors. They're a bit too short for that and the seam that sits b/t the thumb and index finger can become uncomfortable. But, the because of the way it's designed, not using the gaitor means having a hole in the wrist of your jacket that is exposed unless you're wearing full-gauntlet gloves. Seems like a little thing but there have been a few times when I've noticed the cold air (and/or water) flowing in through my sleeve when ice climbing or skiing. And, getting the gaitors over any glove bigger than a liner is pretty difficult.

Awesome Jacket

By:
December 22, 2009

This is my third Mammut jacket and every jacket so far has been outstanding. The Laser so far is my favorite softshell and I have had several other brands. The Schoeller fabric feels great. It is very soft and comfortable and moves with you. I have worn it ski touring and skiing and loved it. I skied in 10 degrees Fahrenheit and 30 mph wind and was toasty warm. I was wearing a Mammut Jasper Zip and a Mammut fleece under it. The fabric is not 100% windproof. It is VERY wind resistant though. You can see a good graph on Schoeller's website at: http://www.schoeller-textiles.com/en/fabrics/soft-shell.html.

My two gripes with the jacket are that there are no inside pockets. (for the price I would expect some) and the hood is way too big unless you use it with a helmet.

Overall I would highly recommend this jacket. It is worth every penny.

AWEOME jacket, but totally NOT waterproof or windproof

By:
February 11, 2010

Bought the jacket which was first rate, BUYER BEWARE, this is NOT a storm shell or a cold weather shell or a waterproof shell. It is an awesome heavy duty soft shell that WILL get soaked in the rain or nuking wet snow. And as a wind stopping exterior shell it is barely there. It is just an amazing soft shell for what it is gorgeous fabric, cut and design extremely high quality. Look for a Marmot Troll Wall or an Arc-teryx hard shell or even Mammut's own hard shell that is Gore-Tex. Not this one. I returned it and plan on getting a Marmut Troll Wall or if Ar-teryx is on sale get that one.
