Just because you're looking to move quickly through the backcountry doesn't mean you have to sacrifice the protection of an avalanche airbag. Checking in at just over five pounds including the airbag, the Mammut Backbone RAS Airbag Pack has a special pocket for your shovel, probe, and avy tools, and enough room to carry what you need for a day tour without slowing you down. It features Mammut's RAS (removable airbag system), which incorporates a large behind-the-head airbag that inflates within seconds to help you avoid burial if caught in a slide, and a built-in TUV-tested PSA back protector that can protect you from the trauma that can be a deadly consequence of being swept through trees or rocks. Since the airbag is removable (and swappable between all Mammut RAS packs) you can also wear the Backbone inbounds to serve as body armor if you're skiing or riding high-consequence lines—it even comes with a removable tailbone protector to keep your butt safe in rocky zones.

Its small size doesn't preclude the Backbone from having all the features you'd expect in a pack designed for the backcountry. It has diagonal, stowable ski and vertical snowboard carry options, as well as a horizontal snowboard carry between the back protector and the body of the pack, keeping the weight of your board close to your body, and the main compartment easily accessible. The Backbone is fully hydration-compatible, and has a padded internal pouch to keep your goggles safe on the ascent.
