Shark Climbing Shoe

The Mad Rock Shark Climbing Shoe is back, and this reincarnation is a more effective killing machine than ever before. The concave shape of the AES midsole provides a high level of sensitivity without compromising edging performance, making the Shark an ideal choice for competition climbers, hard sport routes, and elite-level bouldering. Plus, the Arch Flex system gives you a powerful glove-like fit without the pain typically experienced in a high-performance shoe.

If the shoe fits...

I bought 4 extra pairs of these shoes after I had worn my first pair for a season. The price is fantastic and most importantly, the fit is perfect. They are snug yet still comfortable to wear. The sensitivity is great but they still have the ability to edge. I have a wide toe box and Morton's toe (second toe longer than the big toe) and I can wear these for an extended time. The break-in is also quick. FWIW, I wear these shoes in my street shoe size. If I really wanted to squeeze every bit of performance out of them while sacrificing comfort, I would go down a 1/2 size. Also, for my foot shape, there is literally zero dead space in the heel. I hope that helps.

Excels at steep roof with foot trickery

This is my go-to shoe for steep roof climbing that requires foot trickery. Very hard to find a shoe that completely covers the foot in rubber so if you've been looking, this is the one. Glove-like fit that lets you use your toes, top of foot, side of foot, and heel in useful ways when you have to get funky in a roof.

The Shark 2.0 has been my go-to shoe ever since its release. It is a high performer and edges and smears really well. The toe also does well with cracks, if that's your passion. Where it really does well is on steeper climbing with nice edges, like Tahoe, Bishop and Hueco Tanks, but I have climbed on the sandstone of Fountainbleau with equal success. The break-in period is surprisingly short, and once you have climbing in them a few times, you won't even know you are wearing climbing shoes. I have found that the sizing is very close to what your street shoe would be, as they are designed a bit smaller, so I recommend a half-size down from street. Example: I wear 9 US street shoes and I do an 8.5 US with the Sharks. If you are looking for an affordable shoe that will not let you down whether you are climbing 5.6 or 5.13, these are the shoes for you!

Hope Mad Rock never stops making these!

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Wow! Just finished my first session in these and I'm blown away, the best shoe, by miles, I've ever worn. The heel is spot on, soft enough in the right places to expand and fit irregularities while the stiffer bar down the middle keeps it from rolling under during rock overs if you have a little extra room. The outside edges are stiff enough for the tiniest of foot chips while the softer rubber in the arch allows it to smear like a dream. The toe rubber is insane too! Like others have said, this shoe is brutal getting on though- I wouldn't go tighter than 0.5 size down from street shoe(street shoe sizing was definitely painful enough for me!). For 89 bucks these simply can't be beat. I've used the drone and the haywire from Mad Rock but the sharks are a clear winner for me. Get a pair!
