If you want stiffness and support for multi-pitch attempts, the Mad Rock Phoenix Climbing Shoe is your cup-o-tea. Science Friction 2.2 rubber sticks to the wall like a spitball, and the Edge Tech System gives you a stiff edge to grip the smallest knobs and cracks. Halfway up the sixth pitch, your feet will stay strong because of the stiff midsole and EVA impact footbed inserted into the Phoenix. This leather lace-up also has a 3D molded heel for grip on descents or for the occasional heel-hook.

Bottom Line: Get up. Get ALL the way up.

Training wheels

Decent shoe for climbers who are just getting started, but if you're heading into more difficult routes, definitely upgrade to something a little more aggressive.

Personally, I've never been a fan of shoes with ridging on the heel, it's more gimmicky than effective. The rubber grips ok, but they lose the edge pretty fast, especially in a gym. They're near impossible to climb cracks in, as the lacing extends extremely far down the toe of the shoe.

Pros:
• Price
• Adjustable

Cons:
• Wear out pretty fast
• Far from aggressive
• Weird heel
• Not great for edging
• Not good in cracks

Note: These shoes will stretch out substantially as you break them in.

Good for the GYM !!

By:

For the price, these are one of the best climbing shoes, have very sticky rubber, very comfortable, and they fit very well, but after one or two moths of constant use they will start to stretch. As others commented i agree that these shoes are ideal for beginners or just for climbing at the gym, not very recommended for hard technical rock climbing or boulder problems, but if you get them to learn or just for the Gym they sure will do a great job!!!!!

Can you give me an idea about the sizing of this shoe?
I own the Five ten Anasazi VCS, in 2 sizes smaller than my athletic shoe.
What size would be best for the Phoenix?

Good Beginner Shoe

By:

I have nothing to complain about with these shoes. They are best for climbing in the gym, but are still great for climbing outside. They are very comfortable, the rubber is very grippy. I have tried several different styles and brands of shoes but these are my favs.

Great Shoe. Though not sensitive, it works well in a gym setting. Enjoyable and comfortable to wear. I owned Five Ten Coyotes before, and these are a lot better than those shoes.

Seconded

I agree with the review below. These are a good beginner shoe. They don't have a technical cut to the front of them to give awesome edging, they aren't designed to drive power onto your toe, they are relatively comfortable, and the rubber is sticky. I have started to wear through the rubber on the front of the toes, but I think I drag them a lot.

Good shoe

Great shoe if your feet are misshapen at all or if you want a custom fit. The first time I used them they were digging in, I pulled laces out and then rethreaded them with my foot inside- fit great! and equal pressure along your foot.

The rubber compound is pretty good

I just wish they had a sharper toe tip, find myself slipping on little crimpers a lot.

I am pumped!

By:

I love these shoes. They feel great on my feet and after getting on the wall it was even better.
For being my first set of shoes to own I am very happy with them and I am pumped to go climb every time I put them on.

Good Deal

By:
December 31, 2010

We are beginning climbers and these are much better than the rental shoes. Plus, these were available at our local REI, so we could try them out before we bought them (for much less here).
They were a little stiff at first, but loosed up after a few climbs. I have not noticed any stretching to the point that they are not comfortable or tight enough.

good starter shoe

By:
March 31, 2010

This was my first pair of climbing shoes and they served me well for a year. I ended up replacing them after some full days of climbing because the heel cup was too big for my feet, resulting in lots of movement and blisters (yuck). However, they were sufficiently sticky to allow me to smear effectively (edging was more difficult, but probably because they were too wide for my feet) and they jammed as well as I could. Overall, a good beginner shoe, particularly for the price.
