Here's what others have to say...

Why is this harness consider "getting into climbing". Does it has anything to do with its resistance? Is it secure enough for outdoor rock climbing?

Responded on

Its labeled as such because its a kit with the belay device, biner and chalk bag.
Assuming that once you've been climbing for a while you already have those items. Its nothing to do with the strength or durability.

Good gear! For cheap.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The mad rock harness is a great harness as of yet. Sturdy, very adjustable. In 5 9ish, 170, 34 waist and the medium fits me excellently. The main color of it is a reflective silver, functional and nice looking. The fasteners are slightly different than I've had on my previous harness in that they're D ring style. Which is great, but I searched in vain for about a minute thinking I wasn't properly "double backed." Aka, user error. Upon receiving the belay device and carabiner I was pleasantly surprised with their bright red colors, as it makes them very easily distinguishable. The only thing that could have sweetened the deal with those items is if the carabiner was an auto locking type, which is prefer for belaying, but! Those are a bit more money, glad for the great price on this gear.
Chalk bag is excellent, waist strap, zippered pocket and sealing draw cord. It is the smallest type of bag, so very nice and portable.
My only gripe, the chalk sock came in a plastic jar, sock inside filled with chalk. The sock was sealed with an overhand knot and a small zip tie on top of that. The second day of use the zip tie came off and knot undone and now my chalk bag is now my chalk sock. Not a huge deal, some people prefer that. I'm spoiled, on my last sock there was a draw cord and fastener on the sock itself, which was nice. You could let some chalk out to play in the bag to keep things nice and dusty, but then keep most of it in the sock.

The medium was a little bit big.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I'm 5'9" 150 lbs, with a 32 inch waist. The leg loops on the harness are too big for my legs. So I would recommend a small for people with similar body types

Im about 135 pounds, 5 ft. 7 in. my waist size is 30. Would this be a good package for me or should I get the Black Diamond one instead? I'm just starting to climb rock walls and don't want to pay for equipment rent anymore.

I would go with size Small in this harness Juan. I really like the BD package as well. Both are great choices. If you have any further questions for me you can always email me at

First Harness Kit

Everything came in well, made it easy enough to get used to for a beginner climber and the material is all quality.

Great for Beginners

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This kit is a great place to start for anyone interested in climbing. It offers all the standard pieces of equipment and is very reasonably priced. I have been using this kit for several years and have no complaints.

Overall Good "kit"

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

At first I was only sent the harness and not the entire kit. With that being said one call to Backcountry and they quickly took care of the problem by sending a comparable Mad Rock chalk bag and belay device. Overall, this is a good set up for getting started in climbing.

Great starter kit

I have a soft spot in my heart for Mad Rock as they made everything I used as a beginner. Quality is not the best on their shoes, but this kit will last you for years - and if you are in the harness enough to worry about it not being the most comfy on the market than you've earned an upgrade. As a bonus, I prefer MR chalkbags to anything else out there. This kit is a great way to gear up on the cheap if you're getting into gym climbing or starting to venture outside. The only thing it is missing is a full strength haul loop, which you probably only would use as a beginner if you find yourself setting up a top-managed belay in areas where you have to belay topropers from above.

It comes with a bag to pack all the gear into. Here it's shown next to a nalgene bottle.

Great intro kit

I bought this kit a couple of years ago and found it great for starting to get into climbing. The value is phenomenal and it's served me well. Highly recommended for beginners.

You get what you pay for with this one. The description and use are both accurate. I dont climb too often but this will hold me over for what i do and/or i get to climbing more!

Great set up... Plus the price is right.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I was a little worried when bought this set for my son because Mad rock has a bad reputation in my area but this purchase has changed my mind about Mad rock. The harness is good quality. The belay device is big and heavy but nothing to worry about. the chalk bag is a little tight for big hands like mine but still usable. Over all the set is a good value.

Good way to start

Just started out with this. The harness fits well, true to size. The Chalk bag came with a separate belt and everything came packed in a mesh bag. Looking for everything you need to get started climbing? This will do the trick.

No size guide - what waist size is a large?...

No size guide - what waist size is a large? I am a 35-36 inch waist so will that work for me? This seems like a sweet initial set-up for a newbie...

You'll be much happier off with the Black Diamond Package

It's $30 more, but the harness is far more comfortable with superior gear loops. You're going to spend a good amount of time in your harness, it's worth the investment. The Belay device from BD is comparable, but better in my opinion, smoother and maybe a little easier to use. The carabiner is far superior, and the chalk bag is a chalk bag.

In terms of size, I would go for a large in either case. Size L fits waists size 33-36 inches.

Great Start

Got this to start climbing. Not huge into climbing yet but definitely would like to get more into it. This comes with most everything except shoes and rope to get you started. So far so good as it does the job and the price was right!

So far, so good!

Picked this package up for a trip to North Wash, south of Hanksville, UT. 2 full days and 4 canyons later, it held up and was comfortable for every rappel. Haven't taken it out actually climbing yet, just on this canyoneering trip so far. Adjustable leg loops were a big selling point for me, so I can wear these with shorts while climbing or over a dry suit and any other bulk in the cold canyon waters. Biner and belay device are as good as any other and at this price, definitely a must have for any expedition that requires these goods.

Great for Starting Out

This package came with everything I needed to get started and at a price ($70) that that I could recoup after just a month or two of not having to rent at the rock gym. I started climbing a few months ago in a class that provided the equipment, so this was an inexpensive way to continue climbing. I don't have much to compare with, but the chalk bag seems great- closes well but opens big enough that my hands can easily get in and out. The buckles on the leg straps of the harness are a little strange in that they tend to twist slightly (maybe a quarter turn) but I'd say it still plenty comfortable and metal buckles have a nice finished that makes them seem hardy and resistant to corrosion. Some un-pictured bonuses- a mesh bag for the harness, a separate belt for the chalk bag (for bouldering I guess), and a mesh backpack to hold everything. I'm loving it so far...
