Comfy for kids.

Get your future world champ started early in the Mad Rock Mad Monkey 2.0 Climbing Shoe. Mad Rock filled out this tried-and-true design with two rear closure straps for more adjustability. The dual closure system helps avoid scratchy straps from injuring sensitive feet, so your little climber's toes spend more time on the wall and less time in the parental first aid station.

We love this kid's shoe. It performs well, but mostly it costs less than all the competitors. And as a parent, that matters...cause my kid's feet grow too fast. The updated heel velcro works well to customize fit. This allowed me to buy them big and get more miles out of them. I can fit a size 11 on my 3 yr old (size 8t foot) or my 5 yr old son (size 11t foot). It is big on the younger child, but they aren't climbing hard enough for it to matter.
Rubber is decently sticky and stiff foot bed really helps them versus just climbing in a tennis shoe.
If I could change anything, I'd re-work the velcro. Seems silly, but the velcro is so large and strong, my kids often cannot get it undone. And when you have three kids climbing...it is nice not to HAVE TO help with shoes. Also my oldest daughter has a narrow foot, I have trouble getting the velcro tight enough. I think they would be made even better if there were two velcro straps on the tongue, allowing for an even more custom fit.

My stepson and I started climbing in the gym but I could see he was struggling with his street shoes &/or socks. I got these for him and we could see an immediate improvement in his footwork and abilities. I got these in his regular street size and they fit fine. I don't see any reason to size down for him since he's not doing anything nearly technical enough to warrant uncomfortable break in periods, and kids grow so fast that they need some room. He's been indoor climbing in them maybe a dozen times and they've wore well so far. And though it's hard to see in the pictures, the toe and heel is rubber.

How do I know what size to get? My 4 year old wears a toddler size 8 shoe.

My 3 year old is a size 8 toddler and we have a pair from her older brother that are size 11. They are big, but the heel velcro adjusts them down enough to fit pretty well. It also means they will fit longer. At these young ages, it isn't important that the shoe fit's tight, the sticky rubber still helps them climb, even is the fit isn't perfect. :)

super comfortable, soft shoe. "soft" being the operative word. the soles are a little flimsy for me and not super-sticky (in fairness, i am an adult who climbs in the 5.10's in the gym). For a kid who does low-grade climbing in a gym, they are probably perfect (which is what they are meant for). Maybe for a kids first climbing shoe (?). They actually run big. I am a woman's size 6 in street shoe, and yet, in the Mad Monkey a 5 was too big (since climbing shoes should fit tight). These shoes also stretch a fair amount since they are soft, so take that in to consideration when choosing size. I would definitely recommend them for anyone doing light gym/outdoor climbing.
