As its name suggests, the Lowe Alpine Expedition Backpack is suitable for hauling loads of stuff into the backcountry and does so while providing you carrying comfort and fit versatility. With a max load at around 70 pounds you can over-pack to your heart’s desire and laugh while you ask for help putting your pack back on.

  • The TFX 10 system allows for a custom fit with adjustable lumbar pad and back length
  • The hipbelt and shoulder straps distribute weight evenly with the AdaptiveFit system
  • Torso Motion system allows the frame and hipbelt to react relative to your spine offering more mobility
  • Molded Noggin Notch gives you room to naturally move your head without bumping into gear.
  • Integrated hydration sleeve lets you add your own reservoir
  • Compression straps reduce overall load bulk and can be used to secure trekking poles

Bottom Line: Carry tons of stuff.

Talk shop with all the gear freaks out there: ask 'em questions, upload/browse photos, and give your 2¢.

I am looking for a pack able to handle a downpoor but not looking to spend $600 on a pack. Is this one waterproof? or at least mostly waterproof? I read the spec.s and couldnt find it. thanks!

I've never found a pack to be totally waterproof even the $600 ones. Eventually water will find it's way inside during a sustained downpour. The best insurance against this is a rain cover. If it's any consolation to you, some pack cloths are more water resistant than others like 210D Ripstorm, 100D Invista Ripstop, & 420ACT. The first two are impregnated with silicone and PU coatings, cost much more, & arguably increase overall pack weight. My suggestion would also be to purchase a suitable rain cover & get a less expensive, lighter weight pack that would still suit your needs.

I researched this pack a while back and I could not find any information that it is waterproof so I am thinking it is not. Most packs are not waterproof.

You could buy yourself a $30 cover and keep it fairly dry.

No Sleeping Bag Compartment

By:
November 10, 2011

In the specs on this page it list the pack as having a sleeping bag compartment. It does not have one. Other than that the pack is very comfortable. I have a deuter act lite 65 +10 and this has a similar comfortable feel while hiking. I am 6ft 160 pounds, skinny with a narrow frame. Also, the minimalist waist belt is great for wearing with a harness. The full sized padded belt tends to push my alpine bod harness uncomfortably into the sides of my waist.

I am looking for the closest replacement for the Contour IV.

I am looking for the closest replacement for the Contour IV. Is this? I would love to buy the older model IV if it was still around!

TFX10 on Mt. Logan (Spring 2010)

By:

An enormous capacity pack was what I needed for this expedition. After hard day of pulling my duffel it was easy to put duffel in, strap Crazy Carpet and ski back to the lower camp. Amazing pack. There is a handle on the pack, for your partner to lift it and assist you. Padded belt helped to easier handle heavy load. Belt is removable and I now (for long summer hikes) have my tiny belt assembled. Very lightweight and durable pack. Love it!
