Description

All-around performance, comfort, and durability.

Whether you’re hiking a bumpy backwoods track, walking the dog along a gravel trail, or standing for hours while coaching a soccer game, count on the Lowa Men’s Tempest Lo Hiking Shoe for extended comfort. Lowa shaved the weight and improved the stability on the Tempest Lo with its new Monowrap midsole construction. Add the shock-absorbing Vibram outsole and these shoes fit the bill for excursions on easy to moderate terrain. While you’re working up a sweat, your feet stay cool thanks to the wicking lining and the Lowa Climate Control System, which allows air to enter the lining while each step pumps heat and moisture out.

shoe review

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

these shoes take awhile to get comfortable in. By the time that happened the inside heel/ankle area wore out. 3/4 months.
on the plus side i think the soles will outlast all the other parts.

Review Update

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I'm doing an update from about a year ago. I have had my tempests for over two years now and I've used them fairly often from everything from rockscrambling, light hiking, and casual use. The more I've worn them, the more I really like them. If suppose since I go back and forth between boots depending on the trip, terrain, and duration, these boots have held up remarkably well. They've broken in so well in fact that they're my favorite shoes to wear, because they're so stable and comfortable. They're very grippy and the sole has faired well despite frequent use. They're not waterproof by any means and a light rain will soak through pretty quickly so if you think you're going to hit weather, choose another shoe. They do dry out very quickly however if you happen to get caught, just stuff them with tissues, paper towels, bandanas etc. Great boot.

Heel liner wears out too fast

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I had an older pair of Tempests that lasted me forever, until the sole wore out. The shape of the rest of the shoe was simply amazing.
So I bought a pair of these new generation Tempests and I unfortunately have to agree with some reviews: the liner wore out extremely fast in the heel.
I consider I finished these shoes in about 2 years: my previous pair lasted at least 7 years.
I used to be a Lowa fan, but quality is clearly going down (prices are not though....)

Love the shoe, not durable though

I have gone through three pairs of these shoes. After wearing my first pair, I said goodbye to heavy hiking shoes. They are lightweight and have excellent soles for rock scrambling and snow travel. The only problem is that the seams fall apart way too fast. I wish they would fix this problem.

Quality Shoe

Let me first start off by saying that I'm a huge fan of Lowa. Their boots just simply fit me the best. I read the previous reviews and the comments about durability and have to disagree. I did not own previous generations of Tempests however I've experienced no problems with these. I've worn them casually and on light day hikes. I guess if you're doing hardcore rock scrambling then any shoe will wear out fast, but then again maybe an approach shoe would be more appropriate. I wore the Tempests for two weeks straight backpacking through Europe and didn't get a single blister or hotspot. I highly recommend them.

Pricey shoes - not that durable

I've owned about 5 pairs of the Tempest over the years spanning different versions of the model - the interior lining at the back of the heel just falls apart every time. The stitching comes apart in one place or another as well. I used to get these on clearance at Sierra but now that I have to pay $100+ for these, I won't buy them again.

Just OK

My first pair were great. They were comfortable and I used them for everyday wear,
hiking, and going to local climbing areas. Then,I think the quality of the manufacturing
got cheap. The next pair the heal cup shifted after 3 weeks. If you're not careful putting your shoes on, the material near the top of the heal cup wears out fast. TheRand catches on Rocks and rips away from the leather(yea, yea I shouldn't drag
my toes when stepping over rocks). But the last pair I didn't drag my toes as much,
but the Rand seperated slowly from the leather. I wouldn't of bought the next pair, but I was desperate for a new pair of shoes, tired of shopping, and I knew these would fit.

Just OK

most durable

of all the brands I have tried so far the Lowa Tempest is the most durable shoe for a heavy person.
The upper holds up incredibly well; the lining eventually wears out on the heel
The sole is mega sturdy and does not wear

Color Photo on Backcountry Not Accurate

FYI - the color photo on Backcountry's web site is NOT accurate and the actual shoes are not even close to what is pictured. The actual shoes are very dark gray - very much along the lines of the "Anthracite/ Slate" label. Still great shoes but not what I expected.

Highly recommend Lowa. Having owned several pairs over the years, I can say they are outstanding quality, great fit / comfort, long lasting, etc.

European manufacturer is a plus as well.

New Lowa Tempest

The new design of the Lowa Tempest is definetly NOT the same as Tempest from past years. The shoe is completly different from the tread pattern to fit.I was extremely dissapointed with the new model.Over the past 5 years the shoe has been almost unchanged until now.You might want to search around for the old style Tempest. But for now, a little bummed out in Colorado!!
