The nubuck Lowa Men's Renegade GTX Mid Hiking Boot features a waterproof breathable Gore-Tex lining so you can cross streams and slog through mud, and your feet will stay dry. If water gets in through your boot's top, Lowa designed its insole to use the natural pump action of walking to force water vapor out of the shoe. A beefy Vibram sole will keep you as sure-footed as a mountain goat on rough terrain. These Renegade boots wear comfortably for the long haul thanks to an injected PU mid-sole that absorbs shock and the stability and support of a shank.
Bottom Line: Hike muddy, rocky, wet trails in the Lowa Renegade GTX mid-hikers.
I was looking for a great all-terrain, all purpose, all year boot for college next year, and the stores rep at Paragon sports informed me that this was an employe favorite...and I was not disappointed. They have a very very nice fit, required no breaking in time for me, and are extremely light (like pretty much my sneakers weight). Haven't used them in any really tough terrain or multi-day hikes, but as far as relaxing hikes or even a heavy rain in New York, these are perfects. They can get a little slippery on wet pavement, but what hiking shoes don't?
I wore this boot for more than 300 miles of light trails to get in shape for the John Muir Trail. I then completed the JMT in 22 days (240 miles) in these boots. I had no blisters, no hot spots and I used no tape, bandaids, moleskin or anything other than 2 pair of good quality socks. These boots felt great every day and were rugged enough for every mile of very rocky trail. I wore a 35-40 pound pack for the entire trip and I weigh about 165. The 200+ lb. total was not too much for these boots. The other two friends on my trek also wore LOWA Renegades without problem. I have never had better boots - heavier or lighter.

Bought these "lightweight" hiking boots after 2 years of having the shoe version. Like the shoe version, these Nubuck Beauties achieve comfort right out of the box. Please note: These hikers are not full backpacking boots, rather a lightweight, day-hiking mid. I took them on a 12 mile, 1.5 day/night trek with 25 lbs. on my back in the Mt. Rogers National Rec' Area. Although they had great ankle support, the soles are not meaty enough for rocky or rooty trails. I had several "I can feel the rock come right through the sole" moments. I also found it difficult to tighten the lower laces on descents to avoid my toes hitting the front of the boot. I suspect as I break them in, over time they may soften enough to tighten the instep laces. Also, I liked the slightly wider feel which allowed ample space for a liner and medium wool sock. Great day hiker, not recommended for multi-day backpacking trips.
Lowa GTX Mid Narrow is actually narrow! Tried multiple other "Narrow" boots, including LL Bean Cresta Hiker and Vasque Wasatch; neither were narrow. Great boot so far.
This boot is a great "Jack Of All Trades" choice in a light hiking boot. They fit true to size for a 12 D (medium) boot in that size on a measured foot. Because of the Nubuck material (a high end synthetic leather) and the Cordura upper, they are comfortable out of the box with very little break in. They are not made for backpacking but their lightness and comfort and low break in time make these a better choice for day hiking or longer trekking with light loads. They are all day comfortable, breath well and are 100% waterproof in up to 3-4 inches. They are quite warm in up to single digit temperatures if walking and are not hot in room wear. In Winter, I wear these as an everyday boot and they do not look too technical in an office setting. The material cleans very well after getting muddy with a mild brushing. When these are updated and available, I would not hesitate to replace them with another pair when my current pair wears out.
I've owned at least 4 pair of Lowa Renegade GTX Boots over the past 6 years and have put countless miles on them. In one case, I wore the same pair virtually every day through a Scottish Fall & Winter, with side trips to Bavaria, The Czeck Republic & Poland- all in very cold & wet weather. During this time, I easily averaged 6 miles per day. Never once have I found the minutest flaw or failure. The quality is outstanding, as is the comfort. You simply will not find, regardless of cost, a better hiking boot for average terrain and/or the urban jungles.
Make no mistake, these are serious boots for serious use. Granted, they may not have the heavy duty soles to isolate sharp rocks in really rough terrain, but neither do they weigh a ton. They can handle being worn day-in & day-out without deterioration, and you will never have sore feet at the end of a long day.
These are great boots for fast and light hiking on any trail. They grip well to any surface wet or dry. Comfort also comes in big with these even though a little help comes from "superfeet" greens. I was somewhat worried about the breathability of these boots because they are "waterproof" but I have yet to have any hotspots, so they breathe very well. The Renegades are not at all for packing any weight over 15 pounds, and thats pushing it, the support is just not there in the ankle or sole stability. Overall I use these for daily hikes and even a boots and utes run once in a while. True to size and somewhat for narrow feet.
So Far I love these Boots, I have my own trails and they fit my feet and trails perfectly, Best Pair I have ever owned, I would recommend these boots to anyone.
Does anyone know how this boot compares to the Lowa "Snowbird" hiking boot? I have a pair of Snowbirds which are just great for all-around moderate hiking. What I'm looking for is a boot with a little more ankle support and a more aggressive outsole. Lowa recommended the Renegade. Has anyone had both?
I've had the boots about a month and take day hikes in the Ozark Hills. Yesterdays was 8.5 miles with a lot of up and down in the hills of the Missouri River bluffs. The ground was muddy with wet slippery leafs. The boots preformed great. I need ankle support and got it. My feet were a little sore when finnished but we were pushing for time. Normally very confortable.
I wore my first pair of these wonderful boots for several years, until they were stolen with my car one night. I just bought my second pair, and love these just as much. They are the only boots I've ever worn that required absolutely NO break-in period. They are quite durable, and the Gore Tex works well. I don't backpack anymore, but use these primariy for on- and off-trail photography trips. The soles grip extremely well, and they are so light I sometimes feel almost barefoot. I can't imagine a better boot for my purposes.
I hike mostly in the Great Smoky Mtn's area where many trails are either rocky, wet or both and often the routes involve multiple unbridged stream crossings. Lowa Renegades are great boots for those conditions.
Ahhhhh: The big plus is that these boots require almost zero break-in time. Over the years I've found that they can be worn on a hiking trip right out of the box with only minimal discomfort.
Ouch: Sometimes I backpack with a 35-40 lb. load and on those rocky trail segments I can definitely feel the rocks--especially after a few miles of bad trail. But, hey, these boots are VERY light on the feet so I just accept the compromise between the light weight plus easy break-in vs. something that would be stiff enough to smooth-out those rocky trail surfaces.
Periodic waterproofing is desirable--especially if you wear these on multi-day adventures in wet conditions.
Durability: The life of these boots for me has been about 1,000 miles before they start to break apart at the stitching near the toe bend area. You can have them re-stitched by a shoe repair shop but mine have tended to leak water in that area after being repaired (they do have a Gore-Tex liner). My local store says Lowa will replace these boots if they fail within one year of purchase--mine usually last longer than that since I alternate between two or three pair during my peak hiking season.
Bottom line: I usually keep a new pair of these in my closet "ready to wear" whenever one of my older pair fail. Watch for them to go on sale--the 2009 list price is much higher than what it was in 2008.
Great mid-weight boot that I wore for several years all over Yosemite. Then one day they began to delaminate, both boots about the same time. I wanted to get them reglued (lots of tread left) or resoled but Lowa doesn't do this and there is no glue available for shoe repair places to do this either (even though I tried). Eventually, I had to throw out my Renegades. For a so called "Green Company", Lowa should make it easier to resole perfectly good boots rather than throw them out.
bought these to replace a pair that finally wore out. love 'em. comfy out of the box. great for day hikes and urban use. light but waterproof. probably not for hard treks through the backcountry, but then they would not be this comfy.
I've owned a pair of these for about four years now and they're the best hiking boots I've ever worn. Not only are they very comfortable, which is great for long hikes, but they're sturdy and hold up well to continued use. I wore them almost exclusively on a series of outward bound trips over the last few autumns, and they've met the challenge each time, whether it was 10-mile hikes in pouring rain or summiting a rocky mountainside during a day trip. Through all of it, they've held up excellently and only now have I had to look into getting a new pair, and they will definitely be a new set of Lowa Renegades.
Got my first pair of Lowa Renegade's in 2004, have worn them everyday at work since. I work in a sawmill aroud dirt, mud, water oils. I am buying a new pair today 2008. Would not buy any other boot. They are the BEST.
I broke my ankle six months prior to purchasing my Renegade GTX hiking boots. What I was looking for and found in your product is a light weight boot that fits like a glove! I've yet to field test, I'll be doing that with in the next month and I'll let you know more after hunting.
I wore my new boots at the New Orleans Jazz Fest for 4 days and loved them. They were comfortable the first time I put them on. I am even more impressed with the service I received from Back Country.
