The Louis Garneau Tri X-Speed Shoes deliver the goods you need to step into the world of triathlon racing. They're reasonably light; they offer a secure fit; they effectively transfer power--and they won't kill your budget. Hook them up to your pedals, drop your bike off in the transition area, and be confident that they will be up to the task when it's time to swing a leg over your ride and put distance between you and the competition.

All triathlon shoes are different, of course, but they all must perform one critical function--keep your feet protected from painful hotspots and blisters. After all, in triathlons, there's no putting your feet up when your bike ride is over. Garneau knows this, so they outfitted the Tri X-Speed Shoes with the HRS-80 heel retention system to keep your heel planted firmly in the back of the shoe. Additionally, the decentered Power Flex strap is angled to ensure proper arch support, reduce forefoot pressure, and provide next-to-skin fit. Because time lost in transition can be a race-killer, the strap secures from the outside of your foot inward, ensuring that it won't interfere with the crankarms when you want to get on your way first, and then strap in.

Garneau gave the Tri X-Speed Shoes the high-density Ergo Air II Nylon outsole with its multivent system. It's not quite as stiff as Garneau's carbon fiber soles, but it transfers power effectively and also offers excellent ventilation. The upper is made of synthetic leather and mesh for proper temperature regulation and durability. Ergo Air Cool Stuff blue insoles increase the shoe's ventilation properties.

The pull hoop on the back of the Tri X-Speed Shoe is anchored from the bottom of the heel so you can pull the shoes on quickly and easily. It's also emblazoned with a reflector for added visibility. The Louis Garneau Tri X-Speed Men's Shoes are compatible with two- and three-bolt pedal cleat designs. They come in whole sizes from 38-50 and in White.

Save $ on Socks

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

This shoe runs small, just in case there was any doubt after reading the other reviews. They are even smaller than my other pair of LG shoes. They were too tight with regular socks, and just bearable with thin socks, so I tried sockless (these are tri shoes, and triathletes do have a healthy fear of socks). This worked perfectly. The liner on the heal and tongue are very comfortable and there are no seams to cause issues. The single large strap holds my foot in place as well as any ratchet set up I have used.

The shoe has held up well in use on a trainer, and to my surprise, they do not smell at all. They actually smell a little like new shoes still even after several gallons of sweat being poured into them.

The white is very bright, but the black toe cap helps keep the shoe looking pristine.

Terrible sizing

  • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it
  • Fit:Runs small

I order one size up and they were super tight. Way too small. Returned them and got two sizes up and they were huge. These shoes are only for a certain type of foot and it isn't mine. Goofy sizing. They look cool though

As expected....

Entry level shoe. They work. Fairly cool shoe (as in temperature), lots of air flow, cold on the cooler mornings. I get numb feet after about 45 minutes of ride (regardless of temperature). A more adjustable shoe may improve this. They are ok though and suit the purpose I bought them for.
