Speedzone X-Lite Vest

It's one thing to have a light, packable wind vest to whip out on those chilly mornings. It's another thing to have one that weighs a mere 60 grams and packs down into a ball barely bigger than a fat strawberry—and into a tiny pocket hidden in the collar, no less. That is the power of the Louis Garneau Speedzone X-Lite Vest.

But don't interpret this as a one-trick pony. Disappearing act aside, this is an advanced technical piece. It's made of LG's X-Lite 19 fabric, an extremely light but tough material that's abrasion-resistant, thanks to its ripstop weave construction. Its DWR-waxed finish will protect you from wind and rain alike, and the mesh rear and side paneling bestow plenty of breathability. The lower rear of the vest is cut out so that you still have access to your jersey's pockets, meaning you can bust out the vest without having to transfer all your cargo.

The Louis Garneau Speedzone X-Lite Vest comes in six sizes, from X-Small to XX-Large, and in three color schemes: White/black, Black/red, and Orange Fluo.

Back cutout not that great

-I love the concept of this vest but it doesn?t work out as well as I?d hoped. The cutout doesn?t always line up with your jersey pockets so sometimes fetching stuff from your jersey pockets is problematic. Along these same lines is that if you?re wearing full-fingered gloves it?s harder to get things out of the pockets because you can?t feel where the different fabrics start and end. And typically, if it?s cold enough to need this vest it?s most likely cold enough that I need full fingered gloves. In warmer weather I wear a lighter vest. So what happens a lot when I wear this vest is that I end up having to pull the vest up to get to my jersey pockets just like I with other ?normal?-style vests so the purpose of the back opening is defeated. I?m also not a fan of the single, elastic band that?s used on the bottom-back of the vest. It?s tight and feels weird. -What I do like about this vest is that it?s really well ventilated. You?ll stay warm in it without overheating. I?ve worn it with arm warmers or a long sleeve jersey down to 45 degrees and felt fine. I haven?t had any issues with the zipper. It zips and unzips easily and it?s never caught on the fabric or come undone. I had to size up. Usually I wear a medium in cycling clothes (except Castelli and some other Italian brands) but had to go large with this. I?m 5?9? and 150 pounds. -My reason for the low rating goes back to the fact that the access port in back doesn?t really work for me and if I?m not going to use it then what?s the point of getting a vest like this. What I?ve ended up using more often is a vest with a small pocket in back to hold nutrition for quick access.
