Believe it: Sleeves for warm-weather comfort.

It may seem counterintuitive to put sleeves on for a hot summer ride, but that's what you'll find yourself doing with the Louis Garneau Arm Coolers. Garneau's IceTek fabric incorporates a xylitol surface treatment. Xylitol is the organic compound found in chewing gum that makes your mouth feel cool and refreshed. IceTek fabric causes a similar refreshing feeling against the skin, as it absorbs heat from the body and converts sweat to a refrigerant.

That cooling function aside, putting on the Arm Coolers is certainly more convenient than slapping sunscreen on every time you're trying to sneak in a training ride. The Arm Coolers have a UPF/SPF rating of 50, so they provide more than adequate protection from the sun's dangerous rays. A silicone gripper at the bicep keeps the coolers from sliding down, and a reflective logo adds an extra touch of visibility. The Louis Garneau Arm Coolers are White and come in sizes X-Small through X-Large.

    Work well within reason

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small

Arm and leg coolers do a great job, but like with cold weather gear much of the comfort depends on the individual. I run far too hot for these to be comfortable unless constantly drenched. I will occasionally use them here in the Wasatch in the 70's-80's in high sun exposure, but I go with copious amounts of sunscreen after that. If you run cooler or ride where it's more temperate, these are a great way to mitigate sun exposure. I've found that SPF ratings as well as comfort claims are always subjective. If they were a sure thing for everyone, pro teams in the Tour De France would be covered with them.

    Nice and functional

    • Size Bought: Large

I wear these more for the sun protection than for any "cooling" capacity. I have fair skin and need to wear these for the added protection. Unlike some other reviewers, I don't find the protection of these sleeves to be any less than some other brands. For added protection, I do apply sun screen to my arms before putting on the sleeves, no matter the brand. For most other brands, I wear a medium arm warmer or sleeve but I find the large LG sun sleeves fit me best.

    No SPF

    • Fit: True to size

I bought these so that I wouldn't have to use as much sunscreen while bike touring- so that it would be easier to clean up at the end of the day when wild camping. I used them for 2 summers of bike touring. When I went to the dermatologist this past fall 11 out of 13 pre cancerous spots that I had burned off were all on my arms from just below the cuff of my shirt to my wrists- the area covered and I thought protected by the 50 SPF sun sleeves. It was great to be able to get them wet on really hot days for that cooling evaporative effect but as far as I can tell they offer no SPF protection. My cycling shirt, shorts, bike gloves and use of sunscreen protected the rest of my body, but I felt that the SPF claim by Louis Garneau was misleading and dangerous.

    Great as a sun sleeve

The Louis Garneau Arm Coolers are great for "protection against the suns harmful UV rays". If you pair it with some sunblock, I'm sure the effect is compounded (but careful - most sunscreen stains white clothing!). They're awesome for keeping your arms cool at spring temps but on really hot days (85 degrees +) it'll help to squirt some water over your arms.

The material is thin and you'll barely notice it on your rides. I'm definitely a fan of these.

    Great as a sun sleeve

Good arm coolers, didnt like fit

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

These coolers are very good and the material is excellent. Didn't like the fit because they are very loose. I ordered size L because I have long arms but i'm very skinny so they didn't stay in place because are not tight enough. I use size L in Pearl Izumi and the fit is perfect. I'd rather buy Pearl Izumi.

    Good arm covers

I'm not sure I'm 100% sold on the cooling properties of these things yet. But to be fair I haven't worn them in weather where I really was at the edge of overheating. And I assume that those marginal situations are when they would be most effective.

However, regardless if they cool as advertised, for the price they are still nice compression sleeves for warm weather. Protects from UV better/more consistently than sunscreen. Reflects heat from the sun. And they have the sensation of being well ventilated.
