Handlebar lights are rarely as powerful as they are portable, and if they are, rarely weatherproof as well. The Urban 400 Light from Light & Motion handily delivers that trifecta, while also packing in plenty of style and ease of use to boot.

Few cycling lights come with the pedigree of those from Light & Motion -- a company who has been designing lights for over 20 years. But not always bicycle lights though. In fact, the small Monterey, California company cut its teeth making ocean-proof diving lights that adhered to some of the most stringent safety standards in consumer products. The DNA for safe, highly visible and weatherproof lights for cycling was already in place, and thus we have the Urban 400.

Just as its title implies, the Urban 400 casts a bright 400 lumens beam to help you see and be seen. For the sake of comparison, a typical car headlight tends to put out around 700 or 800 lumens. The level of performance that the Urban 400 delivers allows you to fly over broken pavement at night, seeing the obstacles and having time to avoid them before you run over them. Like the Vis series, Light and Motion's Urban lights have amber side lights to increase your cone of visibility, adding to your safety. Accident data tells us that most car/bike accidents occur at intersections, and not surprisingly, with cars turning into or across cyclist's paths as they thread their way through the intersection. So the more light you can project in all directions, the better.

The Light and Motion Urban 400 Light will run for 2 hours on the high setting and for 4 hours on medium. The lowest setting stretches the lithium-ion battery life out to 8 hours, and once it's dead, a complete charge by means of the included USB-Micro charge cable requires around 5 hours. It's designed to be mounted onto your handlebars and comes with a rubberized, tool-free strap that secures the light in an instant.

Better than my car headlight

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've had this light for a few weeks now and I'm absolutely stoked I sprang for an expensive bike light. This thing lights up the road better than my car headlights. It's good a great peripheral spread, while illuminating far down the road. You definitely can see the side lights from the side, but what really blows me away is how much safer I feel as I'm riding. I was pretty scared of the 2 hour battery life, but I've used it several nights in a row on my 45+ minute commute at night without a recharge and no problems. If you feel like you're getting close you can always turn it down and eek out a little more time. Durability and attachment seem solid, no issues so far.

ALLBUSUP@LIVE.com,

According to Casey at Light & Motion, the band has quite a bit of stretch to it and he thought it should work. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to let us know.

really disappointed in this made in usa product. after unpacking all of the great marketing packaging and charging, nothing. cant get light to turn on at all. returning for refund and will look at my local lbs for the reliable China models.

Light comes at a low charge, the electronics will not let it it turn on until you recharge it. Hope that helps. This is a great light!

Pros
great mounting bracket (doesn't move around)
Super bright

Cons
won't recharge from a laptop: I plugged this in Via the USB cord and it would not charge from my laptop. probably a voltage issue, but it works fine from my wall

Great Buy

Riding in the PNW conditions are always changing. This light holds up great under rainy down pour. 4 different light modes to choose from with great battery life. The best part is that its is rechargeable. Just pack you usb cable and you can charge anywhere at school, work or library.

Do it right, buy this light.

Small size, lightweight, and more than enough power make this a pretty ideal commuting light.

Construction is rugged and I have no doubts as to the weatherproofing. Charging port is covered by a tight sealing rubber cover (also, USB charging is rad). The beam is nicely focused and provides more than enough forward visibility while catching the attention of oncoming traffic.

Very solid purchase and worth the slightly higher price. Buy it once and enjoy it for years.

Remarkable

I absolutely love this light. It is super bright and projects the beam incredibly far. It is super easy to use, and I love that I can recharge it while sitting at my desk at work. The only near complaint I could have is that you need to remember to charge it regularly. I put it in my saddle bag fully charged but didn't use it for a couple of weeks, then coming home late one night it gave up halfway home. Its more my fault than the light, but I had expected it to hold its charge longer.

Do you value your life? GET THIS LIGHT

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Light&Motion makes fantastic stuff, and doesn't do it in China. The lights they make stand up to harsh conditions and put out A LOT of lumens. Don't let the price scare you away. You want this light to keep you safe on the road.
