The Life-Link Snow Saw is great for cutting blocks or digging snow pits. The design reduces skating on ice and packed snow, while the length is designed for optimum block size and ease of packing. The giant Cross Cut teeth cut smoothly on the pull and push. The Snow Saw has a pistol grip with a rubber sleeve for insulation and comfort. The one-piece design comes with a blade protector. -Vendor

Bottom Line: Perfect pits let you easily examine snow conditions.

Life-Link saw

This saw works fine and is light enough - however it is too long for my particular pack (and I suspect others as well). I had to cut it down to fit the new Black Diamond Covert Avalung. I don't think I would ever need that extra 1.5-2" that I cut off.

Voile Shovel Saw

I helped cut a rutschblock with my Voile shovel saw and was able to use the saw without the shovel handle, performing a compression test simultaneously. I would strongly recommend the Voile shovel/saw combo for penny-pinchers who want ease of digging pits.

Bomber Saw

Don't trust shovel saws, as they are too flexible and short for cutting columns in the snow pack. Basically they are about as useful as a ski pole. Plus, it needs to be attached to the shovel handle in order to use it. This leaves you without a shovel for testing and shaping your snowpit. Bottom Line-Go with the independent snow saw. It's not heavy, and allows you to work much faster in the backcountry.
