Double Helix Ski

Just in case the fat-ass dimensions don’t satisfy your powder gluttony, the kids at Liberty gave the Double Helix an elongated tip and tail for a surfy feel and extra forgiveness in variable funk. And don’t be fooled by this ski’s chubby dimensions – Liberty kept the Double Helix light and nimble with an Earth-friendly bamboo laminate core. The quadaxial fiberglass weave provides tons of torsional rigidity and 78 degree UHMW sidewalls sporting oversized HRC 48 edges carve up ice and laugh at lurking rocks. P-Tex 2000 bases help you beat the crowds to your favorite stash, and Liberty’s Cab Forward stance loves to stomp switch landings more than fat chicks love port rinds.

Bottom Line: Double down.

A LOT of fun.....

Used these in backcountry with shorter 50 minute type skinning hikes. No issues at all re weight when heading up and the width allows you take a more direct path in some cases when ascending.

Going down - awesome. A very smooth ski across crud, crust and powder. Turning these things takes no effort even by end of a big day.

Not sure i'd buy them if groomers made up even 30% of your time. Definately would if i knew the vast majority was side or backcountry.

Best skis ever - really - can you lend me $700?

By:
December 15, 2009

Unquestionably the best skis I have ever ridden. There is only one problem with these skis - I don't own them. I took my buddy's skis out and they are killer. I half thought about telling him that they were stolen, but I'm not really a douche like that. Anyway, when I can sponge $700 off of someone or when my boss gets around to giving me a xmas bonus (are you reading this Karl?) I will buy these babies. Abso-freakin-lutely great in the pow, but also ripping in the groomers. A few years ago these would be super fat, but now they're just slightly wide, but even ok for every day.

my friend stole my liberty's!!!!!

i road these skis for the majority of last season and were blown away! I went with the 182, even though i am 6'4", due to the amount of trees and tight situations i seem to encounter in southern colorado. Tons of float in the pow, great control in mix crude conditions and u can lay out big carves when the snow gods are being stubborn. The 190's would be great if ure in CA or spending lots of time AK.

watch out lending these bad boys out cause u might be like me and not get 'em back....the new pair gets here tomorrow:) REALLY want to get on the liberty Genome's for the really deep days.

luv that liberty is 100% wind powered, using renewable bamboo and is locally creating sick-powder-slaying-devices.

Can you compare the weight of the Double Helix w/ JJ's, S7's

Can you compare the weight of the Double Helix w/ JJ's, S7's and Atomic Access & Bent Chetlers? Any thoughts on which might be most appropriate as a daily driver backcountry ski w/ occasional trips to the resort for a lightweight and aggressive skier?

These are the lightest wood core on the market. The 182 is 2200g per skis, or under 5lbs per skis. I am not sure the weight of the other ones, but I know that the JJ's and S7 are heavier. You shouldn't compare this to an Atomic as they are foam core. Also this ski has a traditional sidecut, which JJ's and S7 aren't. The Liberty mini Rocker makes the ski float amazingly well yet keeps it super stable, and works a lot better than the bigger Rocker you find on the S7.
The Double Helix is the best powder ski I've ever skied.

Blown away!

Incredible skis. The amount of float and control that you have in powder with these skis is amazing. Very light and and nimble through the trees and I didn't find that the skis wanted to hook or force me into a turn shape. I felt that I could clarve well even though they aren't reverse sidecut - true slarvyness is reserved for full reverse reverse skis. The camber is flat'ish (there is a slight positive camber), but they are extremely easy to decamber, so the big nose floats up to the top and you can drive them in powder very well without worrying about going over the handlebars. This may relax to a true flat camber over time, but I haven't had them long enough to find out. They work fine as is, though.

I'm 5'9" and 180lbs and went with the 182cm, though I'd feel just as comfortable skiing the 190's. I usually find that my ideal ski length is about 187-188, even though I have skis that are 177-195 in length. The 182's give me plenty of float, though, so there isn't any need for a person of my size who skis aggressively to go longer unless you really want to bomb a face and need the extra stability.

One thing - they are funky on groomers. Surprisingly good edge hold, but the width is such that it takes quite a bit to get them up on edge and then when you do it feels like you kind of fall into place on edge. I came down one icy groomed face after hitting the pow and the edges held like mad on the face, but it was just a bit funky getting used to tipping onto the 121mm waist without a soft substrate.

The only disappointing thing for me was the "Made in China" sticker on the bases when I took them out of the plastic. Hey! I thought these were made in Colorado by snow-loving, red-blooded Americans!

These are wicked in the powder, just as tetchaje202153281 mentionned the FAT HEAD simply stays on top of the Pow! They have a great flex that you can keep on pushin.

It'd be great if we could get the different mounting locations and types of bindings that has been used.
I have one with downhill binding mounted to Standard.
Anyone has a Dynafit on one of these? Where is it mounted?
As far as China goes, I guess you are right, although they are wind powered and use a renewable ressource as the main ingredient; not too bad for a 3 year warranty.
Any comment on the Genomes yet?

I think 1 or 2 cm in front of the standard would be great mounting point, mostly for touring; definetly better with a Dynafit than a Fritshi for the feel of the ski.

I mounted mine with Marker Dukes on the Standard line. I've heard that you shouldn't go Cab Forward unless you ride switch A LOT. I'd be hesitant to mount aft of the Standard line, too, so you don't lose the surprising control that you have on packed runs. This is ski is probably the most fun I've ever had in powder (which is saying a lot given the number of pairs of skis I own), slightly edging out Praxis Powders and Dynastar XXLs as my favorites.

The Praxis' are reverse-reverse and are very powder specific; a one-trick pony, though really good at what it does. Loads of fun, but sketchy hitting the cat-tracks and groomers back to the lifts after the pow.

The XXLs are the best traditional shaped skis I've ever been on in powder (so far), but the stiffer contruction of the skis and the 194cm length demands you be on your game and charge to really reap the benefits. The Liberty is lighter and more playful than the XXL's so you can maneuver easily and quickly through the trees and play around with turn shapes and skiing style.

They're all great skis at what they do, but as far as "playfulness" is concerned, the Liberty's take the cake. Charging - XXLs. Slarvyness, adaptability (in powder only) to varying turn shapes, and absolute impossibility to sink the nose - Praxis.

How fat is too fat? I was asked this a few times by buddies

How fat is too fat? I was asked this a few times by buddies in college, and although I had an answer then (albeit variable), now I'm not so sure. I'd never been on anything as wide as the Double Helix and I love the feel in all conditions. Will the Genomes be even better

depends what you're skiing. if you're skiing sierra cement then I would say get 125 underfoot or less. even for pow days, 125 is plenty. For Montana, Canada, Alaska, etc...140 underfoot is acceptable. you just don't want to get the wrong skis for the wrong conditions. You buy the skis for where you're skiing, not to brag about who has the fattest skis, coolest graphics, or any other crap.

Versatile!

For a ski this fat it handles surprisingly well on groomers. If you want a pow ski that can still shred everywhere else this is the one. If you want one ski that can do it all I would take a look at the Helix, but if you prefer a fat ski, or just a pow ski that handles well even when you're not in the deep, this is great. The flex is perfect, not too soft, not too stiff. The Bamboo core is light, responsive and maintains it's shape. Whether you send big cliffs or jumps, ski tight chutes, or open bowls, this ski will be solid. Another great product from Liberty.

Rally suspension in a ski

By:
February 3, 2010

Got the double helix last year and have skied over 140 days on them at snowbird. even after hundreds of cliff drops and rocks, they still rip. Super durability, super performance, rally racing suspension in a ski. and renewable bamboo makes me feel like i'm doing something about the gobs of waste our sport produces.

The only rockered ski ive owned are 179 hellbents. looking to upgrade to a similar ski in terms of dimensions but a bit stiffer. I love my bents but when it comes to charging they tend to flex out a bit too much....does that make sense? You ski the bird so you know about the conditions i like. do you think the dub helix would satisfy my cravings?
