It comes with a rubber protector tip meant for storage and transportation but not an interchangeable rubber tip for use on pavement or anything like that.

very comfortable and sturdy

I haven't put these to the real test yet but have used them to set up my shelter and have walked a little with them. they are very sturdy and change lengths very easily due to the speed lock system. will update after my grand canyon hike in june.

how reliable is the speed-lock mechanism as far as withstanding collapse under heavy strain or over long periods of strain?

You won't have any problems trusting them to take your body weight and then some. I've vaulted plenty of rocks and streams with mine on a regular basis. Tighten things up every once or twice a season and you'll have no issues whatsoever.
