Description

Multi-purpose pointy object.

The Leatherman Wave Wave Multi-Tool knows it doesn't pay to mess around when you're fixing things. You can botch something up, or you can use the right tools for the job. Chances are the Leatherman Wave includes the right tool. Two sizes of bit driver, powerful pliers, and big locking blades continue the tradition of reliability that made the Wave Leatherman's most popular full-sized multi-tool. The Standard

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is the full size multi-tool that all others are compared against.

This has everything you need, and (almost) nothing you don't. The build quality is fantastic and backed by Leatherman's 25 year guarantee.

Take note, this is a full sized tool. If you want something lighter weight, or have smaller hands, I'd recommend looking at the Leatherman Juice CS4 for a fully-featured pocket tool.

One minor issues with it:

Regarding the tool: I dropped it once and some of the tools then became loose and would open on their own. I had to buy a Secutiry Torx bit-set in order to tighten the bolt that all the tools are threaded through. Due to the design, I actually needed *two* of the identical Security Torx bits. Was able to figure it out and fix my tool. A little upset Leatherman decided to go with security torx and not regular torx or hex bolts.

And as for purchasing from backcountry, $90 is too much to pay for this. It's easily found for $60 elsewhere on the internet .

Majestic Multi-Tool

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This little guy has everything you could ever need all encased in the same pocket-fitting home. My favorite feature is the "wood saw" - works like a champ. I take mine everywhere, and it's gotten me out of trouble countless times. You'd be insane in the membrane not to buy this cool tool.

Responded on

The 'wood saw' can also double as a bread saw. This allows you to share sandwiches with friends.

Responded on

Sharing is very important to us. I also just bought one of these babies for my gentleman friend. He is STOKED!

My favorite Leatherman

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've had a few Leatherman tools over the years and the Wave is my favorite so far. My first tool was the Supertool which I treked all over Europe with and ended up loosing it in Spain. I've had a few Wave tools (one lost and one stolen) and my wife gave me the newest version for Xmas last year. It felt like an old friend in my pocket or on my belt. An excellent tool for everyday use in the city, camping or on the mountain. I don't think I'll ever not own a Wave tool.

Sturdy, tough, go-to multitool

This is a great multitool. It is full size and sturdy, so you can really crank on the pliers and they don't bend a lot. I like that all the blades are accessible from the outside, allowing for quick access. A little heavy for backpacking, but all around every day use, excellent. Love it. This tool is almost always on my hip.

Best friend!

I got a Buck Knife who didn't survive me - but this one like it rough!

For people who get things done.

If you wear Carhartts everyday and work your butt off in the middle of nowhere this is your backup tool and should go everywhere with you. That said it's also what every weekend warrior should should be using too. I got this from a former employer, it came with the uniform. When I left I prayed they wouldn't ask for my wave back and thank heaven they didn't. I've had mine for four years now and it's just as good as the day I bought it. Also if you lose a bit or just want all the options you can order extra bits and carriers from Leatherman directly on their website.

Extremely Versatile

I carry this on my hip every day, and in my pack when I am backcountry skiing. I have used this for more jobs than I can remember, list, or care to even know. Essentially, it's a toolbox in a 6x4 cube. I also have a bit kit that I carry in the sheath, which is handy for more capability.

7 years of ownership and still going strong.

Heafty

I hesitated to give this thing only three stars. I have had it for years, and for years it has been up to every job I have thrown at it. It has just about all of the tools you could ask for. My complaints are only two. The first being, they need to get rid of that ridiculous saw. It is good for nothing but frustration and slipping and cutting your fingers. In a pinch it can be used to loose a s'mores stick from a tree, but in general anything you would use it for can be done just as quickly and easily with the knife. The second complaint is the weight/heft of this thing. It is far too heavy for me to justify putting it in my pack and as such I don't get nearly as much use out of it as I should. Thus the three stars for form not function.

A round of applause for the Wave

I'm stoked on this, i use it for just about anything you can think of. The construction is Leatherman or in other words bombproof. The only suggestion I have is to make a leash for it and attach it to your belt loops or something similar. This helps avoid that time when you undo your belt and it slides right of the end and falls somewhere you will never be able to reach it. Watched this happen to a friend and I wish it upon no one.

5 years going strong.

I use this everyday. I wear it all the time. It does everything I want it to, everything you would expect it to, and some things you wouldn't think it could. Leatherman will gladly fix it if it gets hurt (no hassle). Never lets me down.

Buy it.

Great Multi-Tool

I have had a Leatherman Wave for years and have loved it. The cutter got tweaked and started sticking when I would use the pliers, which was a hassle. I sent it back and was rewarded with a new Wave. The locking blades, both straight edge and serrated, are solid and sharp! I use the scissors often. It is a heavy tool, but well worth its weight. I take it on ski/snowboard tours and to camp on climbs (leaving it there when going for the top to save weight).

Bottom line: Great Mulit-Tool with enough features and a great pair of pliers and two sharp and kick ass blades! Highly recommend!

Magical Mystery Tool

This thing is great. I am constantly tinkering and fixing things, and now that I have the wave I wonder how I got along without it.

Tools lock in place securely and release easily.

The tiny black tool in the picture is a reversible eye glasses-sized screwdriver. Used it today to repair a pair of ray bans my son found in some mud in the park. Now they work great and I look cool.

The nylon sheath is extremely useful. It has several accessory pockets, and I have mine set up with a penlight on one side, a home-made mini sewing awl on the other, and a mini bic lighter that fits perfectly behind the velcro. Not as cool as the old leather sheath, but very utilitarian.

It is a little hefty for backcountry. But I usually bring it along.
I would gladly trade one of the knife blades for an awl and/or a corkscrew--I always bring a real knife anyway. Might just modify the regular blade to a carver/awl shape.

Every time I try to fix something, and then realize that I have this in my pack, I am filled with the joy of preparedness.

Update: I broke the flathead side of the tiny screwdriver bit while repairing a phone that a baby dipped in a glass of water. I wrote to leatherman's customer service and they sent me two replacement bits free of charge. awesome.

Well made tool!

I love my Leatherman Wave and use it all the time. From mountain biking, snowmobiling, hiking, dirt bike riding, etc... my wave is always along for the ride. It's well equipped with all the basic tools you will need and very comfortable to hold. I will agree with one other review that says its a bit heavy. But I guess its a trade off with having so many options.

I also really like the outer blades. I use the outer knives a lot and its super easy to open them with one hand and I really like not having to unfold the tool. My wife has a Gerber multi tool and you can't even compare the too. The Leatherman has better tools, is more comfortable to hold/use, and it way better built. The wave is a bit pricey, but worth it if you take care of it and keep it clean. It comes with either the leather sheath with a snap closure or the nylon sheath with Velcro. I highly prefer the nylon sheath.

Just Awesome

I am writing this review because I recently lost my wave and replaced it with an SOG Powerlock gotten off SAC, and now I am very sad. The wave is everything you need. The pliers are perfect, the screwdriver and other tools lock into place with authority and don't come out! Lastly putting the knife and saw on the outside is such an innovative idea that allows for maximum blade length in a smaller package, I didn't realize how great I had it til it was gone! I will be buying a new wave as soon as my winter job starts!

Bottom Line: I've never felt more prepared for anything than I have with the wave at my side.

Quality

Good price. Great tool. Love the locking blades.

Good all around multitool, but heavy

I've been using the Wave for years and it has been the best out of about 6 or 7 multitools ranging from early leatherman models to several gerber models issued to me in the military. I've always liked the leatherman fold out design as opposed to the "push-out" design of gerbers. But, the older leatherman designs often loosened up faster than I would have expected. The wave, on the other hand, is just like new after about 5 years of use. That being said, the wave has about every tool I ever need, be it tweaking my gear, or make simple repairs around the house. The downside is the weight. I take weight very seriously and almost never justify bringing the wave along on anything besides casual day hikes. There are just lighter, more specialized tools out there, better suited for the other outings I go on.

You come prepared with the wave

True, on most days you probably won't use all 18 functions of this knife, but you know there is going to be that one day. That one day when you're the guy who is able to get the job done on the spot because you are prepared. I'm not a maintenance worker, so I won't be carrying this around with me all the time, but it is always close at hand in my day pack, along with the bit kit. I would definitely take this into the bc.
