Heart rate straps have historically been a somewhat aggravating way to gather heart rate data, what with their constricting tightness, uncomfortable sensors, and uncanny ability to migrate position in the least opportune moments of a ride. While recent developments in wrist-based optical sensors give a bit of relief, watches aren't the easiest to view when you're in the saddle and present an additional tan line in the already comical array of glove, jersey, sock, and short lines we deal with on the daily. Now, Lazer teams up with Lifebeam to bring you strap-free, tan-line free heart rate tracking tucked neatly into your Z1 helmet with the Lazer Z1 Lifebeam DIY Kit.
Originating from its work in the aerospace realm, Lifebeam's optical sensor comes with claims of all-weather durability and exceptional resistance to motion for accurate data tracking through even the most extreme conditions. The small sensor comes tucked neatly into a pad that replaces the front pad on your current Z1 helmet, and utilizes ANT+ and Bluetooth 4.0 protocols to transmit heart rate information to your compatible head unit or tracking app. The one catch is that the sensor needs direct skin contact to measure your heart rate, so you'll have to leave traditional cycling caps and full-coverage beanies at home.
The sensor is wired to a transmitter that sits at the back of the helmet, held in place by a mount that Lazer refers to as the "mudcap". The transmitter can be powered on and off with a quick click of a button and features LED lights to indicate statues. It contains a battery with a claimed 17 hours of active run time, which is rechargeable via an included USB charging cable.

Didn't work, defective
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I tried using it on a Smartphone, a Garmin 500 and it recognized the device but no data, HRM went from 3 to 200 but nothing inbetween. Gave it the college try on a couple rides and at home (even taped it on my forehead). I even tried the LifeBeam app on the smartphone and it ID'ed the device but no data. Yes fully charged and the LiveBeam app even recognized the battery level but no HR.
Caution, you may need a bigger helmet

My head measures right in the middle for a medium helmet. However, a medium is not big enough because of the thickness of the pad containing the sensor. The pad is made of a gel material and is barely compressible, so even wearing a large helmet, the pad presses on one side of my forehead more than the when properly tightened, making it a bit uncomfortable. The sensing unit itself is excellent, even out performing my optical Scocsche armband.
I have a pacemaker and strap type monitors will not work. Will this monitor with my pacemaker?
