Ditch the crowds and head for the snow.

With a name like the Frost GTX Boot, the intended purpose for La Sportiva's latest offering may seem somewhat obvious—and you'd be right. Every detail and feature on the Frost GTX is specifically designed to make this boot perform better in a cold, icy environment. La Sportiva knows you're not going to let frigid temperatures keep you from getting out and snowshoeing with your pooch. Besides, if the cold weather is keeping everyone else home, that just means more solitude for you while you're building your snow igloo to escape from the crowds. When we break down the features of the boot, it becomes immediately apparent that many hours of thought and testing went into the construction of this boot.

Starting from the inside out we find a wide toebox that can easily accommodate the thickest winter socks so you're not left choosing between having to wear a thin sock or feeling as if your digits are being squeezed in an icebox. A Trailon high insulation EVA midsole helps to reduce heat transmission and prevent, as much as possible, heat being transferred from your foot to the cold ground. Moving outward we find a Gore-Tex insulated comfort lining, the warmest liner material that Gore-Tex has to offer. For the outside of the boot, La Sportiva used rubber, nylon, and an abrasion-resistant microfiber that together provide durable, waterproof protection all day. Last, but certainly not least, La Sportiva added a Vibram Ice-Trek sole to provide traction when things get icy, and also to help prevent ice build-up on the soles of the boots.

What do you think about this product?

    Have questions about this product?

    Didn't fit well

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs large

The heels felt pretty sloppy and toe box seems very wide on these. I really wanted to like these but just didn't fit right. It doesn't feel like they are well insulated either.

    Quality

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 46.5

Overall, they are wonderful boots, insulated well and always dry. The rubberized section does a great job keeping the sloppy stuff from soaking up into the boot and adding weight. They are also great for snowshoeing as they have a nice low profile and that same rubberized rand helps stick to the bindings. The only problem, personally, is that I have generally cold feet which ment that while I was walking, they were very comfortable, but if I stopped for a long time to do anything like cook or just rest, they were a little chilly. So cold feet be wary, buy really warm socks. Again, great boots, love la sportiva. Those Italians really know how to make shoes.

    Comfortable With Good Insulation

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

I've worn these on a few short snowshoe outings and one 5.5 hour hike (about 15 miles altogether) and I have no complaints at all. They are absolutely comfortable and good on weight. The low ankle height allows great movement but supports nicely, and the insulation has been plenty to keep my feet warm in temps from 10-25 Fahrenheit.

    great boots

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

I've had these boots for a while now, and used them in temperatures down to -10degC. The are warm and comfortable, good for walking, even when walking a little 'off trail'. The fit is as advertised, makes room for thick winter socks (but my foot is quite narrow).

The Vibram Ice-trek sole isn't as good as they claim it is, but not worse than any other winter boot - this is why it gets 4/5.

Are these boots compatible with strap-on crampons? Thanks.

    Hey Kearney,

These are compatible w/strap-on-crampons. However, they don't have a stiff sole and are subject to popping out of standard crampon. For winter hiking, I would consider a crampon like the CAMP USA Frost Crampons (CMP001A) which work with a wide variety of shoes and boots.
