Description

Kuat's best rack for hauling downhill and other large bikes.

Transporting your big rigs requires a beefy rack like the Kuat NV 2 Bike Rack. This burly bike rack hold them in place as you speed through several states toward dirty downhill freedom. The front and back tire-ratcheting design secures 20- to 29-inch wheels and leaves 13 inches between bikes to protect your components.

  • Two versions (depending on inventory) fit 2-inch and 1.25-inch receivers (rear hitches)
  • Hand-tight cam system makes for easy loading and unloading
  • Fold-up frame supports prevent rattling and damage on bumpy dirty roads
  • Chassis withstands road abuse, folds up for storage, and tilts downward for access to your vehicle's trunk
  • Built-in repair stand permits pre-ride maintenance and post-ride clean-up
  • Integrated cable lock keeps your prized machines from getting jacked at random late-night truck-stops
  • An add-on is available (sold separately and for two-inch version only) for extending the NV's capacity to four big bikes

Glad I opted for the NV.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

After much research and thought I pulled the trigger on the KUAT NV. I looked closely at the 1up since i have several friends that have that rack. I have an old sport works that has finally seen her day. I prefer to carry bikes on the back of the car, don't have to remove wheels and no risk of ripping them off entering the garage. Very impressed with the quality from KUAT and the ease of installation. The rack is not light but much lighter than the old sport works. The mechanism to tighten the rack once inserted into receiver really works well and is very simple to use. The cable lock has been an added bonus, nice to eat lunch or run in the grocery after a ride and not have to hurry up or worry about the bikes. Yes it is pricey but is a very well made rack that should provide years of use.

Very solid, attractive & HEAVY rack

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Just put the NV and the Add-on together. Took longer than I thought it would. I'm a dork I guess, but the pieces are all pretty heavy and it takes a while. With both racks joined, it is heavy. I can maneuver it myself and get it on the hitch. Once on and screwed tight, it seems bullet proof. It is certainly the most attractive bike rack I have ever owned. I think this is going to work out very well.

Some slight detractions. It must come off for my garage door to shut. This is quite a bit of on and off every time I want to go for a ride. It makes my back up alarm scream! :) The conversion form 2 bikes to 4 bikes is not fast. I might, as others have noted, add a single tray for roof mounting just to accelerate things. It is very expensive and, again, heavy.

But all and all, it looks to be a very solid purchase.

so can this fit both a 2" or 1.25" hitch?...

so can this fit both a 2" or 1.25" hitch? Why do some kuat models do both and this one doesn't? am I reading it wrong?

Responded on

The NV is either 2" out of the box or 1.25" out of the box, you must choose, neither is adapter compatible, since the NV is the most rugged of the Kuat racks it needs to be for one or the other but not both to make sure weight distribution is sufficient on the hitch!

NV Phat Bike Review

Great review on why the NV is one of the only Phat Bike compatible racks!

Will this work for road bikes?

Absolutely, road, MT, CX, downhill, free ride. The NV will accommodate it all!

Just got my NV a few weeks ago and it is undoubtedly the top of the food chain in bike racks! ONLY thing Ive noticed when throwing the roadie on it - the front caliper brake can rub on the rubber mounting arm. Quick piece of painters tape across the brake, which I got in the habit of keeping in the car to protect my frames from inferior bike racks I've owned, problem solved. Simple.

KUAT NV 2 bike rack.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have enjoyed this rack now for about a month of traveling to and from cyclocross races. Very well thought out rack. The room between each bike is great. Unlike a Thule rack where you will have parts rubbing on other parts. Not the case with the KUAT. The built in repair stand is an amazing idea and super easy to use. Now if they could just dream up a have of securing the repair stand while away from the rack. I have been removing it and putting it in my car. The quick release function of dropping the rack down is super easy to access the hatch back. Don't even need to remove the bikes. It took me about 25 minutes to put this rack together out of the box. Simple to read and understand directions. I do wish the cable lock was a bit longer to work in and out of bike wheels rather than just the bike frame. Made in the USA, and bomb proff. I would recommend this item to any of my friends.

Tim, Kuat's bottle locks are compatible with the NV cable and locking system and can add up to 6' additional feet to the security feature, just make sure to keep both sets of keys, super convenient!

Best in the Buiz

For a little extra money you get a very well designed and thought-out rack. I actually built my first race MTB on this work stand. The boys at Kuat are very helpful as well. Made in America! This rack kicks ass.

Stout Bike Rack

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Stoutly built and wobble free. The trail repair stand is very cool. Pretty good offset for handlebar saddle clearance. Bike attachment is easy and solid, The other awesome feature is the built in cable locking system and the locking hitch pin that is included as well as the anodized aluminum bottle opener. Just plain looks cool on your rig!

What is the distance between the center of the hitch pin hole to the rack when folded up in order to clear my bumper?

Responded on

Hey,

In the down position the clearance you will get from the center of the pin hole to the nearest point on the rack is 9.5 inches. In the up position you will get a fraction of an inch over 7 inches.

Hope that helps

Kuat NV 2 Bike Rack

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The bike rake was easy to assemble and install. One person can easily connect and disconnect if from a vehicle and the stabilizer is an excellent feature that keeps the rack from bouncing in the receiver hitch. Bikes load and unload in under a minute with very little effort. Overall, this is by far the best bike rake I've seen or used and would definitely recommend.

Is there any issue with using this on a 5th wheel trailer, 4" square bumper and 2" receiver?

Responded on

I can't think of any issue you would have unless there is something already extending off the back end of your fifth-wheel. Spare tire should be fine but any extra storage might get in the way.

BOMBPROOF

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

built and installed in 25 minutes. got the addon, but havent used it yet. locks are great for the hitch, however, the cable locks are too short, a wheel usually has to be compromised with 2 bikes on. i put it on my 2013 Jeep Rubicon, and the spare tire is too wide to fold up the rack. just got a hitch extension and that problem is solved. now the hiccup is that i need 2 locks, one for the new hitch extension and one for the rack. waiting to hear from kuat to see if the keys that came with the rack can be used with another lock, so i only need 1 key for all locks. looks awesome and is seen on truly outfitted trucks and at good shops. way better than thule or yakima, as my friends and i have used both with disappointment compared to this beast of a rack.

Responded on

Nice addition to extend the locks on an NV is the Kuat Bottle lock, the female and male ends of the bottle lock and the lock on the NV are compatible, giving you an extra 5-6' of cable, just make sure you keep both the key for the NV lock AND the key for the bottle lock!

Painful install. Great rack

First - See Steve Brain's review below (same experience as him).

Next Level Shiz

This is like a bike rack for a space ship. The bike stand addition is a very cool idea. Now you can work on your bike while at the trail head. I also like the ability to tighten the rack to the tongue of your hitch. Keeps the rack from wiggling around when hitting jumps in your car.

Solid Rack

Very solid and durable rack. It has a nice locking adjustment so it doesn't rattle around in the trailer hitch. The ratchet that holds the rear wheel should be more adjustable for different sized bikes and the release to bring the rack back up to empty position is awkward to reach.

Love, love, love!

This thing could not be easier. Just plop bike on it, even my short gf can do it in about 20 seconds.

Wish the manual was a bit easier to read, I put it together wrong a couple of times.

Responded on

I really don't know how I could be more satisfied with the product other than:

Make it out of carbon fiber so it's easier to take on an off.

Make it electric so it folds up and down on it's own.

Somehow works with my rear end dection system better...

But otherwise it's perfect!
