The Kelty Shadow Men's Backpack is an ultralight pack designed to carry loads that you'd never describe as ultralight. Sagely realizing you don't want to add big pack weight to an already gigantic load, Kelty made the Shadow from a mixture of light but strong materials, including Lightbeam stays to give a solid structure and help distribute weight efficiently. Loadlifter straps and belt stabilizer straps offer fine adjustments for the anatomical, breathable Spacermesh suspension for a custom fit and feel. Flexing their smart muscles again, Kelty reasoned nobody likes dumping their life out on the trail, so they made the Shadow a panel loader to give you fast, easy access to all your junk. Don't make matters worse with a heavy long-haul pack, take the Kelty Shadow.

Bottom Line: Go big and dig it.

I used it for 2 weeks in the Canadian Rockies and it held up to 2 rain storms, 2 hail storms, and a snow storm. Everything inside kept dry. Waist belt does not close small enough for anyone under about 33". I called Kelty and they don't have smaller waistbelts. Pull cord sinch is not a good design, very akwuard, cracked already, but still functions. Overall, the pack is not very well supported, but if you're staying under 35lb you should comfortable.

best size-to-weight ratio of any large pack

By:

I got this in my quest to lighten up -- if you look at capacity/weight ratio, no other pack over 3500 c.i. even comes close. I've used it on several week-long trips in Utah's canyon country, and found it to be surprisingly comfortable with 30-45 lb loads (had to carry a *lot* of water). It carried like packs I've used that weigh twice as much. It is easy to pack -- the compression straps are well-placed, and the mesh panel and side pockets are great catch-alls. It has a small zip internal pocket in the top lid for keys and other small items.

Two things I wish Kelty had done was to 1) use an adjustable cinch cord on the top of the side pockets instead of just elastic -- I'm concerned about how the elastic will hold up (though it does look like I would be able to add such a cord myself w/o too much trouble) and 2) make the top lid a convertable fanny pack (thus the 4 stars).

The fabric is very light, but surprisingly strong and abrasion resistant -- it shows no signs of wear after being dragged through, over and under rocks and gravel for almost a year now. It also does not have the annoying static and noise problems of silnylon fabrics. The hip belt is completely removable, instead of being sewn onto the pack, so you can replace it along w/the shoulder straps if they wear out. It's also nice to remove them for washing when they get sweat-encrusted.

Overall I was very pleased w/the pack's performance and features, and LOVE the light weight!

Fell Apart

I bought this pack and after 10 miles the main shoulder strap disintegrated. They replaced it free of charge but it ended my trip on the second day.

Kelty Shadow Backpack

By:
June 6, 2005

I just returned from a trip hiking the Appalachian Trail through the Smoky Mountain National Park. My old pack was long overdue for replacement and was one I had hiked with for over 25 years. The Kelty Shadow was like a night and day change for me. The comfort, light weight and ease of entry for supplies made it a real pleasure to use and I received several positive comments from other hikers we shared our shelters with.

Comfortable Pack

I got this pack this past December and just love it. The suspension, padded shoulder straps, and belt strap support your every move. The pack is very lightweight and has enough space for an extended trip. Best pack I've ever owned.
