The Kelty Locus 40 Backpack is your go-to pack for overnight backpacking trips, afternoons at the crag, and days spent skiing. This versatile top-loading backpack features ventilated suspension so you don't soak your tee with sweat as you hike. Carry water bottles, a water bladder, or both in the Locus' mesh side pockets and internal reservoir sleeve. Compression straps stabilize your load, and a floating lid lets you strap a jacket on top. This Kelty bag won a National Geographic Adventure award.

Bottom Line: From desert to mountain, sun to snow, the Kelty Locus 40 carries all the gear you need for a day or an overnight.

Any independent bladder (70 oz or more) will work. Camelbak, Platypus and a few other choices are all good.

Adequate light pack

By:
July 19, 2010

This pack is light and good for campers who have austere gear. It is not roomy and does not have equipment attachment points.

No problems with fit or load bearing. I wore it for 60 miles in the Olympics and its low profile was good for crossing logs, traversing snow fields, and light climbing.

Pack volume was smaller than I anticipated.

I was not content with the material's abrasion resistance. I was not abusing the pack, yet both of my web mesh side pockets ripped in multiple locations.

The length might be an issue. Typical carry on restricts bags to 22" in length, while this pack is 31" long. It is up to the airlines discretion and i think you should be okay with this pack.

great weekend pack

By:
April 16, 2009

Great weekend pack. holds everything i need for three days of climbing and camping. So far this pack has withstood two very wet weekends at the red without a problem (with a rain cover--an absolute lifesaver). The compression straps and floating lid are great for securing odd sized gear. Durable, lightweight, and functional.
