Sleeping out in the summer can be cool and comfy, unless you're having a sweat-attack in your bag. Thanks to a zippered foot vent and a two-way, hip-length zipper in the Kelty Light Year 40-Degree Down Sleeping Bag, you can let cool air in before you get all hot and clammy. Kelty also made this mummy bag with 650-fill down, so you can camp in the mountains without getting chilled. The Light Year 40 Degree Down Bag's sculpted hood surrounds your noggin without making you feel claustrophobic. Down fill holds its loft season after season.

Bottom Line: Lessen your sweaty and clammy awakenings with Kelty's Light Year 40 Degree Down Bag.

Disappointed in BC

By:
December 15, 2011

Bag looked great, loved the specs and was pumped to see it waiting for my when i got home. Only to open box and find out that the bag had a burn hole (see pic), what looked like a partly melted area, had dirt spots all over it and smelled funky. I was very disappointed with backcountry for selling me a product that was this messed up. I'm sure that bag is great, but I'll never know.

If I'm 6"1/2 ft can I get away with a regular length or do I need a long?

No way. I have this bag and at 5'10.5", the regular is just long enough for me. I'd prefer a long for myself. You wouldn't even be able to fit in the regular.

It would be better to have slightly more sleeping bag than not enough. You don't want sleep cramped if you don't have to plus using a 40 degree bag is not as critical as having to survive in a -40 degree bag!

Good warm weather backpacking bag

By:
December 8, 2011

This is a great lightweight bag for summer backpacking. It compresses really small and the included compression stuff sack is of great quality itself too. I've used this for a variety of summer camping/backpacking and have had no issues with durability or comfort. This bag is actually true to its temperature rating and I've used it for 38 or 40 degree nights comfortably. Only thing to point out is that it runs rather short. Specs say that the regular is good to 6ft, but if you're 5'10" or up, I'd go long.

So for an early spring hike, would it be better to take this bag and a fleece liner I already own or get a heavier bag?

Depends on how early in the Spring. A fleece liner adds about 10 degrees of warmth to a sleeping bag. If you think you might see temps colder than 30 degrees, I'd take your heavier bag. Hope that helps...

Outstanding Quality Bag

By:
November 19, 2010

The Kelty Light Year 40 is a wonderful down bag that is priced suspiciously low. If you are like me you may be concerned with the quality of this bag due to the low price. Well don't worry this bag is top notch in quality and very warm. I'm guessing they keep the price low by using 650 fill rather than 800.

Despite the light weight the bag is very warm and roomy, I was expecting to be a bit cramped. The bag puffs up with lots of loft and the fitted head portion of the bag is comfy and warm. A zippered foot box is very nice at the beginning of the night and easily shut when the temperature drops. The hip length zipper is much shorter than most bags but I do not see it as a flaw because I do not unzip other bags that far. The zipper does get hung up pretty easy and that's pretty annoying, oddly the female version of the bag has ribbon stitched in along the zipper to prevent this problem. Hey Kelty why isn't this feature on the men's?

The Light Year stuffs down so small that I have to cram things around it in the bottom of my 35L pack so it fills the bottom of the pack and it's feather light (pun intended). In the warmth department I slept comfortably in 25 degree weather with a hat and silk weight long johns, however I was in a tent along with a the rainfly on and that keeps a lot of heat in.

The included compression stuff sack is a nice bonus however the quality of the stuff sack is ho-hum and I would buy a granite gear compression sack and use the Kelty for your clothes. I have not seen a single stray piece of down floating around. The build of the bag is much nicer than my prior Marmot down bag, slightly nicer than my old North Face down bag and as nice as my Mountain Hardware bag.

Buy this bag with complete confidence, you will not be let down (no pun intended). I'm about to order the 20 degree bag for the colder months, Kelty has really raised the bar on reasonably priced down bags.

if you are right handed get the left zip. That way you use you dominate hand to unzip the bag and it is much easier trust me. If you are left handed by the right zip.

Light weight and warm

By:
April 26, 2011

Used this bag on my recent trip on the AT in the smokies. Temps ranged from 30 to 55 degress F. Used the Sea-to-Summit Thermolite sleeping bag liner on the coldest nights and was quite warm. At 1lb 12 ounces it was nice and light. Would have been too hot in my Northface Blue Kazoo.

It's a 40 degree bag. In my own experience, this bag is good right down to 40 degrees. I've used it in unexpectedly colder temps without much trouble (i.e. 35) you just need to bundle up! But at 40 it's perfectly comfortable.

If the listed weight is correct, this is a 40 degree bag. Search engine results will confirm this. Spec correction is in order here. Should be 30F (-1C)

Light and Fluffy

This is a no frills backpacking mummy for lower elevations. A fleece liner would be recomended if cooler temps are expected. Light weight and dependable. I like the product.

Light summer bag

By:
August 4, 2010

It's what I wanted and comes as advertised. It's a very light and good looking bag. For the money fantastic so far. If you need to stay warm you have to be all the way in it, all zipped in. I'm a brawny dude and it's a little tight when mummified. I will be double checking weather and overnight temps before committing to this bag each time.

Light and Compact

By:
July 15, 2010

Used it for an ultralight bikepacking trip... a long one. This bag treated me well. Take care of the bag, and it will take care of you. Shoved this bag into an OR 5L dry bag along with my Therma Rest and some cold weather gear... that's a lot of stuff for just a 5L bag!!! I was warm down to just below 30 (with bivy)- but I'm normally a warm guy, too. Plenty of room in the bag to move around, throw in the foot vent, and you're dreaming of tomorrow's mountain before you can say "Wow, I'm glad I read some reviews."
