Great, adjustable backpack

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have purchased this style pack for all of my grandchildren. It is nicely engineered and adjustable so as the kids grow, the pack can extend with them. The shoulders and waist are nicely padded for comfort. It has great external side pockets and an easy grip handle on the face of the back for a fast grab. We hike with our dogs as well so everybody is trussed up like a Thanksgiving turkey. I was also lucky enough to find this pack on sale, enabling me to buy for all of the kids. Good job, backcountry.com!

Son Approved

My eight-year old son updated to this backpack for his first overnight backpacking trip. He was ecstatic getting this pack. Now, he has a 21" waist, and it barely fit him. There's no way any of our kids could have fit this pack at 5 or 6 years of age, so if you have petite or slim children keep this in mind. On the plus side, he will be able to use this backpack for many years to come.

We loaded it up, and he hiked up and down, over dunes and down the beach with no complaints. It was a great and memorable trip, and he was genuinely thrilled with his Kelty pack.

As a side note: There are two internal bars inside this pack that keep that compartment open. These bars must be attached to the outside, external bar thru two small slits in the pack PRIOR to use. I almost missed this when setting up my sons backpack. If you missed this step the bars could poke through the pack potentially causing a problem.

Disappointed!

We bought this pack for my 12 year old daughter to hike 7.6 miles back country with us. I took her with me to store and an associate suggested and helped fit this pack. We hadn't even finished the hike in when a bracket from the inside broke and tore thru the pack jabbing her in the side. We were unable to "fix" the bracket and resorted to pulling it out so she could finish the hike in comfortably! I will not be buying my backpacking gear from this store again, and will never buy Kelty brand.

you cannot fault anyone especially the store you bought it from because you happened to get a faulty pack, bad things happen sometimes

Great pack for kids!

My boys love their packs. The frame adjusts nicely and the pack is a decent size (the sleeping bag goes on the outside, underneath the pack, so be sure you put a plastic bag inside the stuff sack if you expect rain.) A word of caution, though: the company says that the pack is designed for kids five through thirteen. However, last summer was the first year I took my kids backpacking and my younger son was seven and a half. He has always been average height and build. The waist belt had to be at its tightest in order for him to carry the pack; if he'd been any smaller, it would have been a "no-go."

Great pack for kids!
