Quit acting like a sherpa for your dog, make Spot haul his own gear in the Kelty Chuckwagon Dog Backpack. The Chuckwagon is an expandable saddlebag that adjusts to fit the size of the load and the size of the dog. The Chuckwagon's two large side compartments provide ample room for food, a leash, and anything else Spot might need on the trail. The added grab handle makes it easy to lift the Chuckwagon off your best friend at the end of the day, and it comes in handy when you're heaving Spot over trail obstacles. The Chuckwagon's removable bear bell ensures Yogi stays clear of your canine.
Bottom Line: The Kelty Chuckwagon Dog Backpack—see spot haul.
This harness works for my dogs but I can see how it just will not work for some others. You may need to exchange it for a different size, be patient BACKCOUNTRY is great! My Black Lab/ Bassets @ 40lb and 65lb can both fit the medium with adjustment. It works for their long bodies. GOOD LUCK!
My son and I like to backpack with our 140 lbs. Bernese. We used this pack on about four multiday trips. The pack did well on flat terain. But as soon as you started in to the mountains with decents the pack would slip off. He also descovered he could drop his shoulders and let it slide off. We did everything to get this pack to fit. The straps would loosen aver time and had to be knotted to keep from slipping. This was not a big deal since once it is fitted properly you should only need to use the quick releases to take off or put on. Construction was good no problems with the zippers or stiching. But definately look for a pack with straps that go infront of and behind your dogs chest.
decent dog pack. could be a bit more adjustable but, holds the perfect amount of food for a 4-5 day backpacking trip with room for bowls. definitely could have held more food with collapsible bowls. I got a size L and my dog weighs around 70 lbs. He was able to slip it off a couple of times but, it is breathable and is easy to get on and off. oh and the bell doesn't do much. not enough to ward off animals anyway it's about as loud as his regular dog tags.

Overall, this is a pretty sweet pack. Great design, materials, and it straps up with ease. Only gripe is the sizing. I have an in-between size dog(45lbs), and bought the medium. I should have gotten the small instead because I think it would have fit better. Worked great to haul gear and hoist her up 20 feet of the ground. I totally recommend this pack.
I love the Chuckwagon dogpack and so does my dog. He sits happily while I fasten it on, and then he's off up the trail hunting for rabbits.
I cinch it quite snug to his sleek body and despite his constant running and pushing through brush the Chuckwagon hasn't slipped or come lose, and that impresses me.
This is a nice quality pack as far as looks and materials go, but it could use some redesign for better fit. Whenever my dog goes down a steep incline, the pack slides off over her head. Also, when she walks with her nose to the ground (which is most of the time) the pack slides too far forward. There is only one strap under the dog--there really should be two. It would also be nice if it were waterproof or came with a cover. It's a good pack for casual walks on level ground.
Just og this pack recently and it really looks nice. I like how it comes with the bell on it and the saddle bags are expandable. Haven't had it out on the trail though, but seems to fit Moose (my 45lb. Weimareiner puppy I got the medium)pretty well. I think he will like it and I can't wait to test it out on the trail. I will update once I have really put this pack to work. As for now though, looks quality and fits right.
This is our first doggie backpack. My Lab/Springer mix is about 40-45lbs and fits into the Medium sizing category. After tightening the adjusting straps all the way, the backpack is still just a little too big for her. Our hikes our easy, but the backpack slips to the side if there is the slightest weight difference. It also slips toward the front if she is sniffing the ground on a downhill slope. This backpack could use some improvements to stop the slipping. However, it's a good starter for the price, particularly if your dog has never used one before.
Thank you so much for my new packpack. My name is Cowboy and I'm a large dog, and I was a naughty boy until you sent me a backpack. Now I have a job to do and I'm much calmer and my people are happy for that. I like wearing this item. I sit nicely for it to be put on and I like carrying my own treats and water! THANK YOU!!
This is quite a cool back pack but seems to be for a very broad dog. Based on measurement sizing chart they should be correct which they kind of are except for two areas: 1.) the pockets knock the elbows of my dogs so you have to put only soft things in there. 2.) its not very tight under the chest although I have tightened it as far as it will go, so you have to balance the weight on each side EXACTLY. I have two different shaped dogs and its the same for both. Well made however
Its rare when you order something over the net that exceeds you expectations. I love the pack. Its lightweight and comfortable for my dog and even has a little bell so I know where she is at all times.
Our dog is between a M and a L, and we're having a little bit of difficulty getting a proper adjustment, but I definitely like the harness straps rather than the other doggy backpack models we've tried. With the backpack, Jake gets a better workout, and he behaves better. An 80 lb. dog needs to have good behavior!
No more heavy lifting!! Couper is in charge of hiking in the water from now on. It works great, fits nicely, and makes everyone smile when they see him coming down the path. The only time I had a problem was when he nosed down a steep incline, sniffing a tree or shrub, and the pack did an endo and flipped over his head and went rolling down the inclinewhich I dived after! But other than that, it's worked perfectly. I, now, take Couper to grocery store and have him pack mule dinner back home! It's great!
I bought this pack to get my dog used to carrying his own load. The pack is pretty small and in one of the compartments there are small pockets. I feel that the pack would be better if they did away with the small internal pockets. I have never used them. The pack's fabric can easily rip on desert walls. After my dog was used to the pack I upgraded to something stronger.
This was my dog first backpack. It's small and very light weight. The only thing I didn't like about it was it has a couple small compartments. I feel having that is unnecessary. I was really impressed how well this pack stood up to the Utah desert wall torture. The fabric with stood well over 50 desert trips.
We put this backback on my 4 yo black lab and he wears it all day. we don't have much weight in it when we aren't walking him, but he really is more mellow and easier to manage with it on.
his behavior changes a little and with an infant in our home, mellow is great. he also seems to love putting it on. when I pick it up his tail starts wagging and he comes over and tries to put it on himself! too funny.
def buy it, but make sure you only add a little weight at a time so they can get used to it, they get sore like we do if we work them too hard.
