    Love Keens and Backcountry

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 12

I am a teacher and I buy beer Keens every year. They last me about 2-3 years. I rotate between black and brown shoes. I have a wider foot, so these are the perfect shoes for me. They are so comfortable being on my feet everyday, but still look professional.

    Great function, questionable form

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Honestly, I've not worn a shoe that fits my feet better than Keen's Austin. Great comfort, great structure, great support. I put on a new pair of Austins and I don't need to worry about blisters or rubbing my feet the wrong way. My only problem is that I'm not crazy about the aesthetics. I don't find the Austins "ugly" but they are not pretty, either. These are great if you care more about the function at the expense of great looks. I've owned multiple pairs and at some point in the future I'll be going back for more. But if it is a date night I would be going for something different.

Fit Size! Fit Size! Fit Size! Fit Size

I bought these for my father. Size fits perfectly. The dark colors make the shoes more formal than they are supposed to be. That been said, they really nice. It's just a note for those who are looking for casual shoes.

      Superb Multi-Purpose Shoe!

The Keen Austin, one of several pairs of Keens that I own, is a great shoe for multiple applications. I use it mainly as a casual shoe; it looks right with khakis, jeans and other casual wear. I really enjoy the design of the Austin, which permits me to spread my toes! Moreover, Backcountry priced the Austin very favorably.

      Comfortable dress shoe for work.

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: 13

I purchased these shoes to replace some dress shoes that I had for work. I wanted something that looked nice but was a little more functional than regular dress shoes. I would have given these shoes five stars but I had to purchase third-party insoles since these shoes hurt the top of my feet right at the bottom of the tongue, where my toes connect to my foot. With the insoles, these shoes are so comfortable and I'll definitely be looking at another pair though I'll be getting insoles as well.

Best work shoes I've ever owned.

I work in an acute care hospital and am on my feet the majority of the day. My feet love these shoes ; even at the end of the day (great arch support, wide toe bed, no pinching, good cushioning). I purchased my 3rd pair with this most recent purchase. I would also like to add that Backcountry has been wonderful. Ordering, changing my order, and returning another item ordered has been painless and delivery was fast. Thank you.

        Kool Keens

        • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
        • Fit: True to size

Great shoes that are good for around town and even casual strolls in the mountains.

I gave these as a gift and the gift receiver usually wears an E-EE in shoes and they fit great.

        Waterproof protection with style

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times
        • Fit: True to size

Great winter everyday shoes, well constructed with some protection from the wet and snow while still breathable. Still can't vouch for the durability after only a month but so far so good. My only complaint, at least for my foot is that the ankles run a little high and rub under my medial and lateral malleolus. This was corrected with an extra foot bed insert.

        formal casual

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
        • Fit: True to size

Nice combination of dressy but casual. Also pretty functional if you need to get in the dirt. Took a while to break in but the leather holds up nice. Only problem is the stitching in the tongue came loose but that was after two years. Laces are still mint. They are pretty heavy due to the huge amount of rubber on the sole. Also they run a little wide - good for a people with toe box problems.

Sorry but I had to return these shoes.

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I have had excellent luck with Keen sandals so I thought the Austins would be the ideal light hiking boot. I found them very stiff and uncomfortable. It may not be the boots fault . I have put too many miles on my feet, too many marathons, too many traithlons and maybe too much hiking. I am now trying the Keen Finlay. Here's hoping for better results.Dealing with Backcoutry is a very pleasant experience and I have no problems with them.

        Amazing shoes...amazing customer service

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Bought these shoes for an extended trip to the Dominican Republic. We'll be doing some light backpacking, and tons of walking on varied terrain. They are perfect. Water-resistant, incredible support, and great moisture-control. They look great, and feel great. This is my new go-to pair of shoes. Keen customer service and support was fantastic. Initially I ordered the Nopo boot...which upon arrival I realized was a completely inappropriate selection for where I was going (waaaaay too hot). Despite the mistake being completely my own, Backcountry.com promptly shipped me a exchange (the Austins, which I LOVE)...trusting that I would in turn ship back the Nopo boots. I was very impressed with this...that kind of customer service is few and far-between these days. When they say "no questions asked" return policy, they mean it! I will certainly buy from Backcountry.com again.

        Great City/Casual Shoe

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I took only this pair of Keen Austins to Europe for a 10 day trip. They are such a great, versatile shoe. I did some light hiking in rural southern France, as well as museum touring in Paris. They handled all the situations well. With the black version, they blend in really well with dark pants for dinner. All around awesome show, really comfortable. I normally wear a 9.5 but only a 10 would fit. I would order up a half size, as the Keen website says to do. I recommend without hesitation.

How does one protect the leather of the Keen Austin shoe?

Hey Dale,Depends on what type of protection you're looking for. If it's for waterproofing and keeping the natural moistures in then look at Nikwax products here: http://www.backcountry.com/store/NIK0032/Nikwax-Waterproofing-Paste-Wax.html If you're looking at just protecting them from some basic moisture look at: http://www.backcountry.com/store/NIK0046/Nikwax-Fabric-Leather-Spray-Footwear-Treatment.htmlBoth of those products have their purpose and work very well for what they're intended!Hope that helps.

Do the sizes run true on this shoe? I've seen comments on other sites that say they run small...

i feel the size is true. i am a 9.5 in most brands and that is true with this shoe and keen. the toe box is generous but i find it more comfortable than sloppy.I normally wear an 11, but for KEENs I wear 10. They run a bit wider than the average shoe which is PERFECT for me (I usually wear a 10W, but go with an 11 if the 10W is not available).
