    Quick and easy filtration.

It doesn't look like much. That's the point. The Katadyn MyBottle Purifier is simple, but it gets the job done so well that it's the only EPA-registered bottle purification system available. Katadyn uses 3 Stage Virustat purification technology with activated carbon to remove bacteria (like giardia), viruses (like ebola), and cysts (bleah). The MyBottle Purifier is compact and lightweight, so it's perfect for camping, hiking, and travel to third-world countries.

    Great purifier

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Followed the instructions and have to say the output is a little less than fantastic, however I'll take pure clean water at a slow rate over dirty water at a fast pace, any day.

    Horrible Horrible

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought two bottles for my Kilimanjaro climb. One worked ok for awhile and then stopped working all together. The other never worked and in fact leaked whenever I try drinking water from it. Thank god I asked one of my fellow climber to grab extra iodine tablets because I would have had to boil all my water. Also, two other fellow climbers each bought two of this item and had the same difficulties as I did. Another thing to note, if you still decide to purchase this, it does not work when the weather gets too cold. This is obvious as the water cannot properly get into the filter. We did anticipate this but so we had iodine for the higher altitudes.

    Very Handy

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I would not suggest taking this as your only water filter for a long overnight backpacking trip; however, it is great to have in a pinch! This was amazing to have as long as the water supply is deep enough to dip the container in. It is best to suck through the mouth piece and squeeze the container at the same time. Also, the first bottle I received did not have a tight enough seal around the screw cap, so I couldn't even prime it without water spilling out the side. Backcountry, however, had amazing customer service and shipped me a new one the very next day. That one worked like a charm! I have even drank out of the Wissahickon using this bottle, and the H2O tastes great!

    handy

I like this bottle. My son and I took Mybottle along with his Katadyn pump style down the Buffalo River. His stopped working because it got clogged (operator error), so all we had was the bottle to get us through the next two days. It does take a little strength to squeeze, leaks a little at times, and seems a bit slow when you're thirsty, but it was a life saver for us. Water tastes good, and fairly easy to clean too. Love the handiness and convenience of this product.

    Prefect for sketchy water

Picked up this bottle for a two week trip to India and this bottle was amazing. Super easy to use. Down side is it was a little hard drinking from since you kinda have to suck hard but knowing the water you are drinking is safe its worth it. Drinking is easier if you also squeeze the bottle.

      Bottle leaks no matter what

I love the principle, but the bottle leaks. Doesn't matter if the filter is in or out, or the straw installed or not. The flip-up lid pinches a flexible tube closed which is ok, but the rubber release valve (which lets in air as you suck/squeeze water out) lets water leak out. This is horrible when I want to put it in my camping bag with valuable electronics which don't care for water.

Also, if the bottle is squeezed while in the pack, when you flip the lid open water will squirt out because of the built up pressure. Really horrible design.

        love it so far

I am really happy with my purifier so far. I have not tried scooping water from a stream, so I can't truly comment on the Virustat cartrtidge yet (and therefore can't give it 5 stars). I have used it for travel to places with "safe" water, but I used the pre-filter just to get rid of unpleasant tastes. My bottle seals securely and I have not had any problems with leaks while putting it in a bag in the car or on an airplane. It fits nicely in my hand as I jog and does have an integrated loop to clip on a bag. I've seen other reviews who thought that it was too difficult to squeeze out the water, but I haven't had a problem, although I've only used the pre-filter on a regular basis. In my trials of the complete 3 stage system, I didn't think I had to work excessively to get the water out. The only think I don't like is that there is no cover on the spout, so it could easily be splashed with "tainted" water or mud or whatever. I think it needs some type of shower-cap to keep it clean. Also, my kids are always trying to take it and flip the spout open and closed. This unit is light and easy to carry even when full, although it is only 750 ml or 24 oz. (but the whole point of the unit is that you can fill it frequently and not carry gallons of water).

I used my Katadyn MyBottle 2 years ago but it has since been sitting on a shelf. I'm taking it on a trip again...do I need a new filter since it has sat for so long or should the same one work just as well. P.s. I only used about 50 cycles on my last trip.

I've used this for years and really like it. The newer bottle design however slows the flow from the mouthpiece compared to the older bottle, so I'm just using the older bottle. My question: the virus filter seems like overkill here on the west coast of the u.s for backpacking. does just using the two-piece filter improve water flow? Because it does take a while to knock back a bottle of water. Oh, and how do people like the Sawyer squeeze filter by comparison?

Well I'm answering i/2 of my questions here. I called Katydyn and the rep I spoke with said that the virustat section of the filter was overkill "in North America". she didn't know if leaving that section out would improve flow. Katydyn does sell the simpler set up. Still waiting for a comparison with Sawyer!

Is there a way to get a replacement cap...

Is there a way to get a replacement cap with a new valve? It appears that my bottle cap has a defect. The tube which connects mouthpiece to filter is bent, preventing water from flowing through. Imagine trying to drink a glass of water through a plastic straw folded in half...

I had the same problem, and it's actually very easy to fix. Snap off the mouthpiece, trim the tubing a bit (~1/4" for mine), and put it back together. I think this may be a common problem, and the cause of the slow flow mentioned by others.

What's the difference between the katadyn MyBottle Purifier Bottle and the Katadyn MyBottle Microfilter Bottle?

That is other than the cost.

Also which are the replacement cartridges for each?

The difference is the purification catridge. The MyBottle Purifier has a stage 3 Virustat/carbon cartridge, while the Microfilter comes with the carbon/glass fiber cartridge. The more expensive one just has an upgraded filter cartridge for remove viruses, while the Microfilter does not. However, they both use the MyBottle ViruPur Replacement Cartridge. Which means you can turn the microfilter into the Purifier by simply replacing the cartridge. I apologize if this is confusing!

Just what is the purifying mechanism? Is it a filter cartridge? Is their iodine involved. How many gallons will it purify. What does a replacement cartridge cost or is this an integrated unit?

"The fiberglass pre-filter removes bacteria and protozoa as well as particles larger than 0.3 microns The new 3-layer filter medium ViruPur blocks viruses and the smallest particles based on electrokinetic depth filtration."

This purifier bottle doesn’t require chemicals like iodine or use batteries to make it work. The element can filter up to 100 liters, depending on water quality them the unit needs to be replaced.

Ok. i'm trying to imagine I'm in the backcountry or maybe a hotel in Africa. If I'm using tap or bottled water easy to see how you'd get in the MyBottle. But what about on the trail or off road? Maybe use a separate bottle to pour the water into the MyBottle? Is it filtered as I drink it (I suspect yes) or as I pour it into bottle? I'll try to find complete specs on it. Google time!

According to Katadyn you just dip it in the water and put cap/filter on. I guess no issues with nasties in cap or on threads because it seals well enough. Any water that touches your lips comes right from the filter to the drinking spout. The spout obviously never going anywhere near the pretreated drinking water. Have to wash that with already treated water if it's grungy. Sort of the ultimate day hike/sport bottle really. Sounds good for rafting and North African restaurants!

ive been using this system for years in Pisgah and the AT. i have not ever had an issue getting any GI bugs. i just dip it into the stream and BAM... fresh water. this system also has the advantage of getting fresh water from slow dripping questionable sources where a pump would be useless. water on the threads is fine, just keep the mouthpiece clean.

Is the filter replaceable? How much? Aren't the katadyn fliters for the other bottle?

            Hey Dutchman,
I haven't owned one of these and taken it apart but it appears as with other Katadyn products, the good people there have created a replacement cartridge for the MyBottle. Check out the Katadyn website:

            http://www.katadyn.com/usen/katadyn-products/products/katadynshopconnect/katadyn-water-filters-accessoriespartskits/

The Virustat Kit is a complete filter replacement (costs ~$35) and the Cyst Filter Cartridge (costs ~$20) is to replace the inner 2 components of the 3-piece filter system.
