Does the Katadyn Mini remove the same amount and type of pollutants (bacteria, etc) as the Hiker Pro?

Hey,
The Mini will actually do more by overall volume than the Hiker Pro, but at half the flow rate per minute. Both will do the job of removing the pathogens usually found in the US, although the Mini goes to 0.2 microns and the Pro goes to 0.3 microns. There's the basic specs.
As for my personal opinion: I used a small ceramic filter from another manufacturer for many years. The ceramic cartridge always seemed to give me problems, even pumping from clean sources. It clogged too easily, pumped slowly, was too fragile, became all but worthless in cold temps, needed replacing long before the stated life expectancy...the list goes on, and if it could make my life miserable in ways I never imagined, it did. At first I loved it, then I hated it. I now use the Hiker Pro almost exclusively. While the weight and size of the Mini is appealing, I prefer to have a filter that never gives me grief...at all. And, filtering water is what I consider as a necessary evil, at best. I hate doing it, and quite frankly, doing it with a flow rate of only 1/2L per minute (maybe at first) would piss me off royally and I know from experience that I would go lighter on the hydration because of it- dread would overcome thirst- I want to pump and go. And I'm not even going to go there with what that would mean at meal time. No thanks, I'll stick with my Hiker Pro. Read Chip's review below. That's the life of a ceramic filter user. Hope this helps.
Small, light but takes effort

I have the "pocket" filter and it works great but also a brick to carry around. I got this one, it is much less weight but is slow and takes some effort to pump. I am impressed with the filter life and lighter load, just need to slow down and take some more time and effort to pump water.

what is the main difference from the Hiker pro model and this one?

The Hiker Pro does significantly better in cold (freezing weather) due to the lack of a ceramic element. Additionally the Hiker pro will filter at about 2x the rate of the Mini Ceramic. However, the Mini Ceramic is about 100 grams lighter and the filter element lasts significantly longer before needing replacement (1,800+ gallons vs 1,150 liters).
no thanks

It filters the water good and the filter is easy to clean but it takes superman strengh to work it. My girl could not even use it and when she pumped .5 L she was so tired and drank the water she pumped. I am pretty strong and it takes me about 5min per liter to filter. When I have to pump 4 liters I needed to take brakes and would take me 40 min to pump 4 liters. I will not ever take this filter with me backpacking again unless its just me and only me. Even then I prob would not take it. I cant waste that much time and energy getting water. Over one day I spent 2 hours pumping and that is too long. Buy if you want but I warned you. Im going to try the msr autoflow gravity filter.
An Outstanding addition to my gear

The Katadyn Mini Ceramic Microfilter is just what I was looking for. It compact, lightweight and appears to do a good job. The real test is in the field. I be doing some backpacking in a few weeks and I"ll give the filter a real field test over the course of a few days.
I anticipate it will do a great job. If it doesn't, I'll amend my review and let you know. Thanks Backcountry transaction was smooth and easy!

Does this version of the Katadyn Mini Ceramic Microfilter come with the extra goodies: a prefilter, bottle clip, carry bag, measuring gauge (indicates when the filter element should be changed), and cleaning pad.

Use the chat now button in the upper right hand corner to ask the customer service rep.. the previous year's version had all of that, so it's weird that this description doesn't have it
