Great set of Hiking Crampons
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
The wife and I were headed to hike Mt Adams in August and needed a pair of crampons to make the final ascent. I had to order these next-day air because the stores around here did not rent flexible crampons to use with trail runners. When the box arrived I was stunned by how light these little guys are. For being steel I was expecting a heavier set. The adjustments were a piece of cake and I quickly fit them to both our shoes in a matter of minutes. These crampons came with the anti-balling plates (tough rubber material) though the description does not mention that. The plates were a little bit of a pain to install but got them on in the end.
On to the trail. We started hiking at 4:00am while the snow was still hard. We put the crampons on and started up. Each step was very secure as the 3/4" spikes dug into the snow/ice surface. We were sticking just as well as the others in our group with heavy climbing crampons. The slopes were 30-35 degrees and we could go straight up with no problem. Even switch backing and traversing were no match. Not one slip. We got off the snow, quickly unbuckled the crampons and they were off in seconds. Compact down nice and small. One pair can fit in a gaiter to use as a crampon bag.
The binding system is great. One buckle over the toe secures the front of the foot and an ankle strap get the back of the foot. There is a nice shoelace hook to prevent the top strap from riding up to your ankle while walking in shorter shoes. The quick-lace system on my wife's Salomon's worked just as well as my conventional laces on my La Sportivas.
Highly recommend the K-10's as an all-around hiking crampon to use with trail shoes or other flexible footwear. You can even use these with stiffer boots according to the website though I have not tried.
