The DarkSide is the widest ski in K2's Backside Series, bringing so much flotation to your ride that you'll swear it could only be evil. Give in to the width, feel the force of the Hybritech sidewall construction, and let the DarkSide's rockered tip crush all that stands before you...whether it be crusty, sun- and wind-affected mank, or the souls of all your buddies on narrow planks.
Paulownia and aspen core keeps weight as low as possible
Hybritech sidewalls place race-room vertical sidewalls underfoot, with cap construction at the tip and tail for light weight and chip resistance
Removable tip and tail rivets for attaching K2 custom-fit skins (available separately)
Increased tip rocker improves the Darkside's maneuverability and stability in variable conditions for 2010
Anyone know the actual pull-length on these skis? (Pull-length is when you hook a tape measure over the nose and measure to the outside edge of the tail, straight down the center.)
I'm a 5'6" 150 lb man and am currently looking for a bigger skin than my 170s-ish BD Havoc. Having skied little on anything with rocker, would you recommend a 181 or 188 in these for a advanced to expert skier? (ie. not interested in throwing myself off "big" cliffs but charging hard on off-camber steeps). Also, anyone tour with these? Are they a pain in the ass due too weight and width?
Now this is a fun ski. Huge and stable, yet really turny with the full rocker. Don't be too surprised though when they can still hold an edge with the flat camber under foot. Can go full speed ahead and float off of drops, or turn on a dime when your line doesn't really go thru. These are beasts for uphill travel, but pretty fun on the full on powder days, especially if it is coastal thickness, or wind hammered.

Just don't buy for your eventual 6'2" size. It's going to take a while to get there and ski styles and technology will change enough between now and then that you'll have just wasted several years on skis that are too big for you.
depends a lot more on how aggro you are and how you like to turn, than how tall you are. go longer and its tougher to turn quickly, but more solid if you are pushing it. Also conditions, are you jumping out of helis? Getting 100+ days? Go longer. If not the shorter length might rock 4 you. Enjoy!
Best skis ever created. Such perfection can't be appreciated properly without cutting your teeth on skinny straight skis; nevertheless, i wish i had a time machine to send myself a few pairs circa 1995. Ideally with a female terminator to ensure safe passage... "come with me if you want to live."
Have been skiing the 181 SideStash for the past 2 seasons. Very happy with them in every way except on hard crud and ice. Wanna try the DarkSide, after hearing good things about them. Wondering if the DS will ski the same as the 181 SideStash or if I should go with the 188's. I'm 6', 185 lbs, expert skier. Thanks.
At 72" (your height), Standing barefoot, where did the length of the SideStash 181's hit you? Do you know if the DS 181's will be the same lenght as the SideStash 181's ?? Thanks!
Hey I'm a 5'9" 140 lb lady & love my 181 K2 Coomba's. I'm wondering if the Darkside 188's will be too big for me? I feel like the 181's will be too short for me with the rocker & all. I'm looking for something to charge hard on. Any thoughts?
if you want to push them real hard and you feel like your 181s are short go ahead and grab the 188s...its not a big enough jump it will throw you off your game
Length and binding placement... I'm 5'8", 165lbs, and have been riding off-piste in Switzerland for the past 3 years... looking for a "bigger" powder ski... I currently ride 181cm Scott P4's. Are the 188's too long? Also, I am not planning on riding switch at any point... if I want to jib, I'll take my P4's out. These would be for fast deep lines only. Where would you reccomend mounting the bindings?
The darkside has pretty significant tip rocker that almost goes to the toe of the binding. For yourself, being 165, using the skis for the fast deep lines, and skiing off-piste in Europe, you should stick pretty close to the traditional mounting point. Maybe 1-1/2cm forward if you like to be more centered on the ski. But don't worry, the tip rocker is so substantial lengthwise that you shouldn't have to worry about compromising float. That being said, also don't worry about the length issue either especially if you are going for big lines. Go for the 188s.
Depends on what you are looking for. For your size if you are a charger go for anything over a 12 DIN. Anything over a 12 DIN goes for all bindings in my opinion. Taking them in the backcountry I would use a Duke or Fritschi, not dynafit because of the torsional torque on sucha big ski underfoot. Alpine bindings, go with a strong toe always. Automatic toe height style bindings can be bothersome when they release under a little tail pressure. Go with an adjustable toe height binding for maximum security like the Salomon STH 16 if you want to have full confidence.
I would definitely recommend you go with the 188. The rocker will make the ski feel a bit shorter than a normal cambered ski and with your height, you'll want the leverage of a longer ski. I'm slightly smaller than you at 6'2" 185 lbs and any rockered ski below 185 really feels unskiable because it washes out on turns and doesn't provide enough stability at speed.
I am debating on what is the best size for me. I am 5'10" 165 and an aggressive skier. I normally ski around 180cm length and did like the 2010 in the 181 but with the increased rocker I am thinking that the 188 maybe the better option. I would have skied it but have not been able to find anyone the last 2 months that has it in my area. Any input would be great.
You would handle the 188 with no problem. Go long! These skis ski short with the amazing front rocker. Love these boards! I am 6'3" 240 skiing the 188 and wish it came in a 195!
Now this is a fun ski. Huge and stable, yet really turny with the full rocker. Don't be too surprised though when they can still hold an edge with more...
