A tried-and-true one-quiver ski, the K2 Apache Xplorer Ski w/ Marker MX 12.0 Binding rallies through the powder you dream of all summer long, then it hops back onto the groomer and lands back at the base of the mountain several minutes faster than your friends. So go buy a latte and come back in time to meet them for the next lift ride. The included Marker Mx 12.0 binding transmits power directly to the Xplorer Ski for incredibly precise performance.

  • Wide powder shovel and progressive sidecut let you hold your own whether you’re levitating through the soft stuff or slicing quick corduroy turns
  • Metal laminate cap construction incorporates two titanium sheet layers for K2’s most damp, accurate, and high-performance feel
  • Fir and aspen wood core blends strength with liveliness
  • MOD Monic Technology places a vibration dampener in the tip of the ski to smooth your ride
  • A wide Marker MX Binding extends across the entire ski for efficient power transmission to the edges

Bottom Line: Explore and conquer.

Normally I ski on GS race skis but since I am getting up there in age (46) I decided to find a nice easy all mountain ski. This ski is awesome. It holds a nice edge in any condition, can run if you let them and will shred the pow if need be. Stop looking and go buy a pair...life is short

I am looking for a ski about 162-168cm, 13-15m turning radius,

I am looking for a ski about 162-168cm, 13-15m turning radius, about 65-75 at the waist. I'm an amateur racer, about 5'8" and 145lbs, and (I know this sounds strange) I want either a race ski that I can use off the course or a carver that would perform alright between the gates. Any suggestions?

Not the k2 xplorer. I am a huge fan of the Fischer Progressor 8. it is 72 underfoot and medium stiffness. It is my favorite ski this season. It can handle anything as well as being a great carver. I skied it on icy days, cruddy days, mushy days, and powdery days (powdery for the east) and it handed it all. I am 5'5" and 130lbs and I ski the 155cm. You can go either 160 or 165 depending on how strong you are. This ski carve and rips. It has a progressive turning radius so it can do both Slalom and GS turns depending on how much you push it. If you want something stiffer, then you can go for the Progressor 9 165cm. It is A LOT stiffer than the 8 and has a plate to make it even stiffer. It is too stiff for me to handle properly (the 165, I didn't get a chance to ski the 160), but It was nice and smooth and picked up speed very fast on the flats and I enjoyed it, but couldn't push it enough to make short radius turns because i don't have the weight or the muscle. It is 70mm underfoot. You might also want to check out the "tuned down" Volkl racetiger models.

K2 Xplorer Skis - A great pair of skis!

By:
March 30, 2010

I have been skiing for 26 years (off and on over the past 10 years with kids, 2-ACL repairs, etc) So this is my first pair of new skis in awhile. I must say the price scared me for quite sometime so I waited for the sale. I now can say that even if I did not wait, I still would have been happy paying full price for these skis. They carve very well, turn quick enough in the moguls (though need a tad-bit of extra work) and are nice and stable with a little bit of soft snow down on a groomer. I wanted a ski that provides me more control, a little more balance in speed (I don't need to bomb down the hill like I am 16 anymore) and these really fit the bill. I am 6' tall and went with the 170's - completely happy with them. I can tell if I went longer they would give me plenty more speed but for me I do not need it. I would rather stay in control and practice my technical skills versus point and go down a hill. I would recommend these skis to anyone - beginner or advanced and think that if you have the basics down as a skier you would be very happy with these skis. They fit the hype and I love'em.

REALLY all mountain

I'm hugely impressed by these. Reviewers have pointed out that the explorer's aren't very lively. I agree. They're not nearly as snappy as wood core skis without metal laminate...but that's what you should expect from this type of construction. The explorer's are very stable and smooth at speed as well in tight turns straight down the fall line. The wide shovel makes them very friendly in pow and crud. The stiff tails are forgiving enough to recover if you get knocked into the backseat. I've been skiing 23 years, [did the patrol thing back in the day], and still these skis inspire confidence to try rowdier lines. If there's a shortcoming, it may be that folks who really like the quick feedback of a more wood design will be a little underwhelmed.
