The K2 Aluminum Avalanche 230cm Probe gives you a stiff and reliable way to measure snowpack, practice rescue skills, and, of course, pinpoint a buried victim in a real-life avalanche rescue. Along with a partner, beacon, and shovel, this aluminum probe helps to prepare you for backcountry travel with its trigger-pull handle and strong, stiff shaft. It also features 230 one-centimeter graduations for accurate snowpack depth readings and comes with a stuff sack for easy packing.

  • Lightweight, stiff aluminum shaft provides lots of strength during practice and real-life rescues
  • The 230cm length is best suited for shallow Continental snow packs (CO, NM, MT, and sometimes UT)
  • Trigger Pull handle and a cord inside the probe let you pull the handle and assemble the probe in a second or less; handle also features a contoured shape to enable super-compact storage in a pack
  • Backslide Auto Lock just below the handle safely locks the probe in place for drills and rescues and features a textured grip so you can tighten it while wearing gloves
  • Metal head busts through compact debris so you can always get a strike
  • Graduated shaft lets you measure the snowpack in centimeters before you dig a snow study pit
  • Lightweight and compact when folded (16.5in) means you won't have a problem finding room in your pack
  • Included sack enables tangle-free storage and quick grabbing with its folding closure
  • Always head into the backcountry with a probe, shovel, beacon, and partner
  • Avalanche gear only benefits you and your party after you take an avalanche course and regularly practice your skills

It's a probe.

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

For gate-accessed skiing, where weight is not as much of a concern, this probe fits the bill. This is my first probe, and has mainly been used to observe snow layers while skinning. I have yet to use it for poking for bodies. Seems fairly stout, and I enjoy the deploy handle as well as the grippy area at the top of the probe.
