Where the Joplin is an endurance racer or cross-country rider's ideal; the Furtado Segundo complete mountain bike answers the wishes of new-school mountain bikers. No, this Juliana is not a huck-yourself ticket to the ER room, but a highly capable ascender and descender that forgoes wagon wheels in favor of nimbler 27.5in rollers that're perfect for backcountry adventures or the latest progressive trail.

Give its name, it should come as no surprise that Juli Furtado was instrumental in the development of this bike. Unlike the Primeiro carbon fiber frame, the Segundo opts for optimized hydroformed aluminum to help keep its price lower, with only a slight weight penalty. The component mix consists of Shimano SLX, FOX Racing Shox, and Race Face for the goal of achieving extreme value without compromising performance.

The Segundo shares the same 125mm Virtual Pivot Point suspension design found on the Primeiro. The latest generation of VPP rear suspension uses upper and lower links that flatten out the shock rate and provide a more active feel to the early part of the suspension travel. The suspension also allows the rear wheel to move up and back as you ride over a bump, and it balances the downward force of pedaling with the pulling force of the chain through its link configuration. The resulting movement makes it easier to roll over a bump or through a dip, and the suspension doesn’t change whether you’re in the saddle or not.

The Juliana Furtado Segundo has a carbon fiber upper link that shaves weight and enhances lateral stiffness. It's counterpart on the bottom is alloy, and it has easily-serviceable grease ports. The pivots for both links have stout 15mm locking collet axle-pins so they won't creak or loosen, and they run on intricately-sealed bearings that should last the life of the frame.

The VPP suspension of this Juliana is damped by a FOX CTD Evolution rear shock -- a lightweight, reliable shock that features an intuitive interface for simple, on-the-fly suspension tuning. It has three distinct settings; a firm 'Climbing' setting, medium 'Trail' setting, and a plush 'Descend' setting. This keeps operation straightforward and intuitive for beginners and experts alike.

Complementing the CTD rear shock is a 130mm FOX 32 FLOAT CTD Evolution front shock. Like the 142 x 12mm rear axle, the fork sports a 15mm thru axle for stiffness. A hand-laced and tensioned wheelset composed of a Sram MTH 716 front and 746 rear hubs, 2.0 spokes, and WTB i23 rims spin around those axles. For tires, knobby Maxxis High Rollers 2.3 tubeless tires provide a nice mix of speed and grip.

The drivetrain is a 3x10 Shimano SLX group, including the rear derailleur, shifters, and cassette. To keep price reasonable, Deore cranks and hydraulic brakes are spec'd. Finishing off the build are Juliana Compact handlebars, Race Face Ride XC stem and seatpost with a Juliana Segundo saddle perched atop of it.

    Im just going to come out and say it, IM IN LOVE WITH THIS BIKE! I had basically stopped mountain biking because the bike I had was so old, so heavy with no suspension it was just a pain to haul up the mountain. It was not fun to ride, so I just didn't. I decided it was time for an upgrade. I went from the Stone Age to the Space Age with this Juliana bike.

    I just can't stop getting out there with this unbelievably fun bike! You truly will be the envy of the trail with the beaut!

    I am 5'5 and the Medium is perfect for me! I put the Shimano PD-M530 MTB SPD Pedals with the Diadora Escape 2 Women's Shoe. See links attached.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

    I love my new Furtado. I tried a 29" and it was too much bike for my 5'4" height, so the 27.5" gave me the best of both worlds. I can roll over obstacles that I didn't have the confidence to try before, but still can maneuver easily. I have used it on single track and road and am having fun again. I went with a small frame and my friends who tried it also were impressed.
