Use the JOBY GorillaTorch Switchback as a headlamp or a lantern—it's your choice. As a headlamp, the Switchback offers your three choices of LED light modes, and as a lantern this light is powerful enough to offer 360-degree illumination inside a medium-sized tent. Just pop the headlamp into the lantern case and pop the lantern lens up and out of its self-storage case.

  • Multiple light modes allow you to dim your headlamp and flip between LED options with a push of a switch at the back of the headband

Not bad

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

Got this from for $20. I normally don't use the lantern case, only the Gorillapod and headlamp. I love how the tripod can wrap around tree branches and even the grip of my hiking pole to take pictures. Only 1.6 ounces for the tripod, too. The headlamp can blast a mighty 130 lumens on high, or you can use a few lower settings for minimal light and to save battery life. The headlamp is really heavy, though. 4.6 ounces is like a brick compared to other headlamps. The headband is adjustable, which is nice for people with gigantic heads, like me. The lantern has a hook on the top of the case that lets you hand it from the top of the inside of your tent to give some great illumination. I had only one problem with it, and that was when the cover to the battery storage compartment popped off and got lost. I contacted Joby and asked them if they'd send a replacement cover. They responded by sending me a whole new Switchback unit! Tripod, lantern and headlamp! That's great customer service! I'm surprised to see this get such low marks. I really like my Switchback. For the current price of $30, you can't beat it. Heck, the Gorillapod tripod alone will run you $20 at least, on most online gear stores.

Okay not super

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times

Bought this for a steal on steep and cheap. I can pretty easily snap the headlamp into the base, which has been the complaint of others, so that's not a huge factor. I took it back country and my biggest complaint is the weight. I like the lantern idea but really its too heavy for the mild convenience factor. Basically good but not great.

Mixed feelings

Purchased on Steep and Cheap and was impressed by the innovation. Durability is good. Light output and adjustment is fantastic. Headband is as comfortable as any others I've tried.

I agree with earlier reviews in that its difficult to snap the battery pack securely into the lantern base. It takes a lot of practice and you really need some light to see what you're doing. I've only had it out a couple nights so I can't vouch for battery life yet.
