Everything you need at a price you can afford.

You're committed to that overnight backpacking trip, and now you need to find a comfortable pack that won't break the bank. Look no further than the modestly priced and fully featured JanSport Katahdin 40L Backpack. The EVA foam back panel, hip-belt, and shoulder straps provide the comfort you need for a long day on the trail, while the top-loading main compartment has ample space to stow your camping gear.

The rugged 600D fabric is tough to withstand the rigors of life in the wilderness. A hydration sleeve holds your hydration bladder or can be used as a laptop compartment when you're in town, and the cushy shoulder straps have hydration tube straps to keep your water in place. A sternum strap and padded waist belt keep your pack comfortably and securely in place so it's not constantly shifting and throwing you off balance. Multiple pockets help you keep smaller items organized so you don't have to sift through all your stuff every time you need a snack or sunglasses. Compression straps at the lid help you cram everything in, and mesh side pockets offer a little extra space for whatever still doesn't fit.

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought this pack for my daughter, and I was hoping that it would be a little more robust. Looking back, I probably should have just paid extra for a pack with a frame. This pack, while the torso measurements should have worked for her, is a bit flimsy and gaps at the back more than I think it should. I would say though that it is adequate, nothing phenomenal, and a good value.

Careful Buying, Poor Construction

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought this bag right before a 2 week climbing trip. Shipping was super fast (as usual), but the first time I filled the bag with gear & put it on my shoulder one of the straps broke. Ending up having to tie the hip & shoulder strap together just to be able to use the backpack on the trip. Ended up getting the bag re-sewn after the trip (but lost the shoulder strap clip) so it's not very comfortable for long walks with much weight.

Besides the strap it was a nice bag (had just enough room to be a crag bag but might be a little small if you're the only one carrying gear).

I got what I paid for when I went for price over quality. Hopefully it was just a one off lemon, but I wouldn't buy this bag again (nor this brand for backpacking purposes).

Uber-light, plenty of pockets.

This is a great 40-liter pack for overnight camping trips and weekend outings. There's a bunch of organizational compartments for stuffing your water bottles, hygienic items, extra snacks, and miscellaneous gear. Probably best if you're using lightweight camping equipment, as it's not the biggest at just 40-liters. However, I can fit my lightweight sleeping bag, alongside a relatively bulky tent that's probably best served on car camping trips.

The overall construction seems a bit lightweight, with the straps being super-thin. This is nice for avoiding extra heft, yet I'm slightly concerned with the overall build quality if it's being crammed to full capacity. I'm sure it'll hold up for a season or two and it's priced much cheaper than other offerings. I'd consider these factors when making your decision.

Comfortable/Light Weight

Took this backpack on my 10 day camping trip around Iceland and on numerous hiking trips and I love it! I'm prone to back pain and found extreme comfort when wearing this backpack for up to 2 hours at a time. My Elevation Sleeping Pad fit perfectly in one of the water bottle pockets along with 10 days worth of clothes, one pair of shoes, and my sleep bag.
