A Journey for All Conditions.....

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The first thing I noticed upon sitting in my new Jackson Journey was the fit and comfort of the boat. Having a Jackson Karma Lg to paddle in my white water excursions, I was pleased that the Journey fits exactly like my Karma. (I am 6? tall and weigh around 200lbs and thanks to the adjustability of the outfitting, my 5?7 130lb wife can get a great fit as well). It only takes a few seconds to get you dialed in and ready to go. With a solid five points of contact, the Journey paddles efficiently without sliding around in the seat. This makes for better boat control in dynamic water and less wasted energy while touring. Jackson is really on to something with this boat because along with excellent tracking, the Journey also turns and edges brilliantly. While on edge, the Journey remains stable and nimble. This makes the boat great for a first time paddler and a seasoned veteran alike. This is a boat that, as your skills develop, will be there for the whole progression. This versatility has allowed me to paddle my Journey in everything from flat calm lake trips to playing in coastal rock gardens and tide races. The Journey is a fantastic boat to instruct with and to put students in. The stability will put the newest of boaters at ease and the handling will allow more advanced students to really push their skills. There is also ample room in the boat for safety gear and essentials for shorter multi-day expeditions. The deck rigging is well placed and user friendly. I have found my Journey 14 to have excellent design functionality for touring, play and instruction.I prefer my ocean going boats to have a day hatch for stowing on-water essentials. The Journey comes with a day hatch with a suspended bag. I have chosen to remove the bag and insert a foam bulkhead in the stern hatch to make a more traditional day hatch. I can now store my gear in the day hatch and be confident that if I capsize with the day hatch open it won?t compromise the entire stern hatch. All in all, the Journey is a great boat for all abilities.

So much control and comfort!

I found the Journey to be as easy to use as any of the competitive 14' roto touring boats, but two things really set it apart for me. One is the outfitting. Its just like what Jackson uses in its whitewater boats, and not only has all-day comfort, but I can adjust it easily to fit me, so I can brace in waves and not come out, and makes learning to roll much easier than with boats with rec style outfitting. Secondly, the hull of the Journey just seems to get more and more responsive as I spend more time in it. Playing in the surf, its very confidence inspiring. Same on fast rivers, or when the tide is at full speed, just a joy to paddle. Hardly use my much more expensive 16 ft composite boat since the Journey!

Fun boat!

Big fan of the Journey 14. This boat is extremely comfortable, easy to paddle, and stable. It's great for beginners but I enjoy pushing it's limits on long river trips. Its the perfect boat for a day paddle or a few nights when you want to cover some miles. Load it down, take it to the river, cover some miles.
