Integral Designs Siltarp2 - 2006 BCS
Available Colors / Styles
The Integral Designs Siltarp2 is designed for those wanting an ultra-lightweight shelter. The Siltarp2 can be used as a tent awning, wind/rain shelter, or covered gear storage. At 14oz, the Siltarp2 is light enough to take on all trips. This minimalist tarp is an 8x10 ft rectangular made from waterproof nylon. The 30 denier parachute rip-stop nylon is impregnated with silicone for weather resistance. It is incredibly strong and resilient. The Siltarp2 has a seam down the center of the 8ft length, which provides extra strength but does require manual sealing with Silnet sealant (included). There is 1 lightweight nylon tie loop sewn to a reinforced center patch and 16 nylon webbing loops at 2 ft intervals along the edges. These loops facilitate a variety of set ups on trekking poles, off trees or onto tents.
Bottom Line: The Siltarp2 is a minimalist shelter for light-and-fast expeditions.

I have found you can pitch it either way and it makes no difference which way the seam is running

I would love to see a picture of that, sounds good, but I got lost in your description.

It depends on how you pitch the tarp. You can stake one of the 10' sides taught, then lift your pole in the middle of the other 10' side (make it maybe 40" high) then bring the two points on the still-unattached 10' side in toward the pole a couple of feet. Voila! A roomy shelter for two, almost a pyramid, strung along the 8' ridge seam. (Or, if you're doing an A-frame, make the ridgeline the 8' seam. You'll have an 8'-long shelter wide enough so that two people don't have to slide right up against the tarp to fit.)

I've never sealed my sewn seams on a siliconized-nylon tarp or tent and never experienced any leakage. Granted, I'm in the Rockies, not the Cascades, so my downpours tend to be less biblical in nature than others might experience. One thing I've noticed: If you do seal your seams, do so long before you go camping. You'll want the sealant to dry for a good long time so it doesn't stick to itself -- a particularly bad sensation when you pull your tarp (now, your conjoined "blob" of nylon) out of the stuff sack.

Great in the snow and rain
This tarp was great for two people. We had plenty of space for our gear, enough room to make a snow bench and lounge and eat. I use this tarp in conjunctions more...
