The Integral Designs Siltarp2 is designed for those wanting an ultra-lightweight shelter. The Siltarp2 can be used as a tent awning, wind/rain shelter, or covered gear storage. At 14oz, the Siltarp2 is light enough to take on all trips. This minimalist tarp is an 8x10 ft rectangular made from waterproof nylon. The 30 denier parachute rip-stop nylon is impregnated with silicone for weather resistance. It is incredibly strong and resilient. The Siltarp2 has a seam down the center of the 8ft length, which provides extra strength but does require manual sealing with Silnet sealant (included). There is 1 lightweight nylon tie loop sewn to a reinforced center patch and 16 nylon webbing loops at 2 ft intervals along the edges. These loops facilitate a variety of set ups on trekking poles, off trees or onto tents.

Bottom Line: The Siltarp2 is a minimalist shelter for light-and-fast expeditions.

Bought this tarp for hunting season for a quick rain shelter. It has now become my primary bivy/tent. got caught in a Montana hail storm at 9000ft winds must have been over 60mph I can't believe this tarp held up without a scratch! You can put an enourmous amount of pressure on the eylets to really tie it down tight and it packs down small and light. My only addition is some para rope and four stakes. I have already ordered two more to give as gifts for my hunting buddies.

Great in the snow and rain

By:
February 23, 2010

This tarp was great for two people. We had plenty of space for our gear, enough room to make a snow bench and lounge and eat. I use this tarp in conjunctions with a tent, which is intentionally small and light. For 15oz., it is great for getting out of the snow. The tarp is very small, light and easy to deal with. I also appreciate the neutral, gray color.

I've seen 12x12 in Silnylon pretty commonly, but never 16x16. Maybe the cost is prohibitive (I'd think it would be $300-$400 or more). Maybe structurally it is hard to do, too -- suspending the tarp's weight over a longer ridgeline?

There's a version of the Kelty Noah tarp that's 16x16, but it's not Silnylon. Truck tarps and canvas tarps are also made at that size.

You could try REI or something for a bigger one and cut it down, Backcountry doesn't do custom tarps. This isn't Backcountry brand gear anyway. This is a good company for on the shelf items like you're looking for. No special production or "cut to size" necessary. Hopefully the 15'x15' will work for you needs.http://www.boundarywaterscatalog.com/browse.cfm/4,5442.html

Siltarp2 - 8X10

By:
February 15, 2005

I like the service your website offers and my ranking should not reflect the service. I am disappointed in the Siltarp2 – 8x10 tarp itself. I was expecting a ridge seam of 10 foot long rather than an 8 foot ridge seam. Integral Designs’ decision in cutting the sections this way does reduce the amount of material needed to make the tarp, therefore reducing the cost to manufacture. However, it also reduces the efficiency of a tarp with the longer ridge seam. With other manufactures charging almost the same for their product with a 10 foot ridge seam, I would be hard pressed to recommend this product to others.

I have found you can pitch it either way and it makes no difference which way the seam is running

I would love to see a picture of that, sounds good, but I got lost in your description.

It depends on how you pitch the tarp. You can stake one of the 10' sides taught, then lift your pole in the middle of the other 10' side (make it maybe 40" high) then bring the two points on the still-unattached 10' side in toward the pole a couple of feet. Voila! A roomy shelter for two, almost a pyramid, strung along the 8' ridge seam. (Or, if you're doing an A-frame, make the ridgeline the 8' seam. You'll have an 8'-long shelter wide enough so that two people don't have to slide right up against the tarp to fit.)

Nice Tarp

By:
January 19, 2011

Its a nice tarp...lightweight and feels bomber. It makes a good 2-man shelter, although I wouldn't want to share the space with a partner if it got to raining too much. The only complaint I have is having to apply my own seam sealant. I understand that many folks seal their own shelter seams and some manufacturers even recommend it. But, I've never had the need to go beyond factory sealing and found applying my own to be a pain in the a$$. It was really difficult to apply in a thin manner and I think I added 6 oz to the weight of the tarp in sealant alone (slight exaggeration of course).

I've never sealed my sewn seams on a siliconized-nylon tarp or tent and never experienced any leakage. Granted, I'm in the Rockies, not the Cascades, so my downpours tend to be less biblical in nature than others might experience. One thing I've noticed: If you do seal your seams, do so long before you go camping. You'll want the sealant to dry for a good long time so it doesn't stick to itself -- a particularly bad sensation when you pull your tarp (now, your conjoined "blob" of nylon) out of the stuff sack.

Keep it simple

By:

The tarp is no frills, and I love that. It's a perfect fabric, lightweight, super packable, and very large.

You do have to seem seal the center, and it does come with sealant. I realized upon taking it out for the first time, that it was a little harder than I thought...I missed some sealant in the center.

Also, it doesn't come with any rope. For the price, I wish they'd fix you up with some string.

I haven't been rained on yet, but when you look at the fabric, you can tell it will be waterproof, and that this is a quality product.

can't beat this tarp

By:
July 5, 2011

I used this tarp and only this tarp, well, with a sleeping bag to do the tct trans catalina trail. The winds were ar gail force and all boats/ships were halted from in or off the island. I camped at a beach one night and at a park the other night, the winds were riping up tants and really howling. My tarp was pitched as a low a frame and held strong all night. While others were having a hard time, I was sleeping like rip van winkle. It packs the size of a arizona ice tea and it next to nothing in weight. Tuff as nails and worth the cost easily. If your into packing light and leaving the extras behind, this is the ticket

Huddled under this tarp, in the rain, just north of Rocky Mountain National Park. Rained on us ALL day. Set this up near the fire and played poker and just hung out. Worked great. Extremely lightweight. It's very slick and that made getting it back into the tiny stuff sack interesting. It rolls up smaller than a Nalgene and weighs less than a full bottle. Perfect to cover the cooking and hanging out area at basecamp.

Siltarp2

I wanted a tarp that was lightweight. I found it. I wanted a tarp that was simple. I found it. I also wanted the best price. I certainly found that. Initially I wasn't too happy with gray being the only available color in stock, but putting it to use on a weeklong trip in Sequoia NP I found it nearly disappeared among the gray granite boulders. It was also easy to set up in any number of configurations.
