Whether youre finally on your way to the airport for that long-awaited sabbatical, or just en route to the office to save for the trip, youll hardly notice the difference when wearing Icebreakers Mayfair Wool Jacket. Not only will the double-breasted front and below-waist cut have you looking sharp and standing tall as you make your way through the crowds, but the insulation coming from the Mayfairs merino wool construction will also help preserve that distinct warm glow that comes from knowing youre a man on a mission.

  • Merino wool’s natural fibers provide excellent insulation and resist odors, and unlike traditional, long-cut wool fibers, merino wool’s fine cut fibers are soft to the touch
  • 380g / m2 fabric rating balances excellent wind protection, internal breathability, and temperature regulation—so you stay warm without overheating
  • Front zipper covered by flap to help keep more wind from sneaking in
  • Zippered front pockets help keep your contents from sprouting legs and walking off
  • Icebreaker makes its products in a way that supports New Zealand farmers, ensures overall welfare of the sheep producing the wool, and promotes sustainable manufacturing

Bottom Line: Merin-oh!

Great casual (semi-formal) coat

By:

This coat was a bit of a long shot for me as I wanted a peacoat-style, but then again not the classic peacoat look. This Icebreaker has a cleaner cut than normal, smaller collar and a zipper on the inside which make it altogether different from the old school coats. The wool is nice and fairly soft with a great collar and clean look on the outside when it is all buttoned-up. As someone said before, it was a bit wrinkled coming out of the box, but obviously the wrinkles worked out over a couple days of wear. You have to zip it and button it, not just one or the other for the best fit\closure. The zipper caused me a bit of concern at first... I thought it was delicate so I couldn't get it to zip. Turns out you just have to be pretty firm\forceful with it and it hooks up.

Someone mentioned an odd fit - I didn't experience this at all. I always wear a large in all jackets (5'11" and 180), this fits perfectly. Sleeves are a smidge long, but that's fine for a cold-weather jacket.

Super versatile also, can throw it over jeans and a tshirt or with a shirt and tie and long enough even to go over a suit jacket.

Overall a great buy, just took me a little while to get used to it's features.

Fit for an alien

By:
January 6, 2012

For starters, I loved the look of this jacket and was stoked when Backcountry got their new stock. I'm a small guy 5'6" @ 140lbs. Based on the sizing chart, I ordered a small. It looked great right out of the package and the quality seemed good (even though it's made in China). Unfortunately, the sleeves were about 6" too long and the jacket was so tight I could have Hulked out of it. Bummer. I returned it and went for a medium. On the medium, the sleeves were absurdly long and the jacket was still tight through the back and shoulders. I think I have an athletic build, but c'mon, I'm 140lbs. I've never put on a medium anything that was this tight. Net result - no Icebreaker for me. Conclusion, this jacket will fit you if you have a waifer-like supermodel build or you are an alien with abnormally long arms.

Their polos are also sized way small. Gym rats beware.

Bought my Mayfair in 2007, still going strong. Love it. Will get another when my current one finally falls apart (who know when that will be). Warm and stylish.

I am someone who really feels the cold. I've just ordered this product and it seems a bit thin. Is it warmer than it seems... it's so thin that I can't believe it will be warm enough. You've had one for a few winters so I wonder what you think. Thaks

I am an undercover white guy from the future, the year 2700 to be exact. Where I come from, you need something like this to conceal your laser gun.
I freakin' love this jacket and if you try me for it, I'll blast you.
