at 6'1" a large is just a tad short in the torso and the arms. thumbholes hold it in place though with a little more pull than I'd like. will keep the large, but would go XL next time. holds up to Vermont winter cross-country skis and runs.

Is this going to be too warm for fall and spring cycling?

It might work for late fall and early spring on a mountain bike, but it could be a tough sell for road riding where windchill is more of an issue. The quantum fabric is more wind-resistant than the regular knits, but it isn't windproof by any means. Personally, I'd recommend a lighter weight shirt like Elise suggested, and pair it up with a lightweight windshirt like a marmot driclime, or something from another manufacturer that is more cycling-specific.

By itself you would probably be ok as long as there is constant airflow. If you layered over it with a jersey or wind shirt you would probably be pretty warm. If that is more your style I recommend looking into a 160 weight in the superfine or performance category.

Fall/Spring Outer or Winter Mid Layer

By:
November 28, 2010

Thought maybe my mine was the 2009 version, but I checked and it's 260 weight so I'll review here. Caught it on a sale up in northern MN this spring and I've been loving it ever since! I'm 6'1" about 190 and the Large fits perfect (though any little bit of padding is quite evident--this is a very athletic fitting piece!) I've used it in cool weather as an outer layer. Now that it's getting cold out it will go under my shell and over some additional merino layers and I'll be giving wind chill the finger during some winter alleycats as the scuba hood on this piece fits very nicely under my helmet along with a thin liner hat and a Buff for my face. There is additional venting under the arms to help with heat regulation as well.

The only feature that has me perplexed is the dual zipper. What am I going to do with that? They should have just saved the complication and put a normal zipper on this shirt.

Get this layer as an outer for cool weather over other bomber merino pieces or as an integral part of your merino armor for winter. Just know the hood will make you look like a ninja/stalker-creeper and your wife/girlio will ask that you leave it off except by necessity.

This is a super necro comment considering it's 7.5 months later, but I'm not sure "loose" would be part of how I'd describe this piece, though that might have to do with my waist more than the shirt I guess. The hood is certainly not loose in any aspect--when they say scuba hood they mean it! The zipper on the back is smaller gage than the main zipper, but I'll have to double comment after trying out my pack with the shirt to confirm where it hits.

Hey Andrew:)
Im pretty much the same size as you, and have size M 260 tech top that still fits me, but i've started to look for something a bit looser and with a hood, but without hand pockets that chew my hips under a hip belt.
The Quantum fits very nice in those specs, but can you tell if the zip on the back will chew under the lumber pad on a backpack? I currently use the Osprey Argon 85 for size reference, with up to 40 pounds in it. Do you think it would be a problem on the back stash pocket?

Great but...

This layer is awesome for winters in Texas and hiking in the Summers in Colorado. It also works as a good base layer when snowboarding in the winter. Sometimes I'd get so hot I'd take off my top layer and use this as my outer shell. To add to that, it's actually a pretty awesome looking layer. I'd wear it to the gym and while doing my warm up. If you have an athletic build it fits close. B/C it is a baselayer the hood fits TIGHT around your head so that you can wear a helmet/put another hood over it from your top layer. Before I purchased this piece, I owned the GT220 version of this jacket which is actually a bit lighter.

I figured the GT260 would fit the same as the GT 220 and have the same cut - and Icebreaker claims it is the same but for some reason it was just too short for me. I am 6ft tall, athletic build and have a long torso but the XL just didn't fit as good as the GT220. So I had to return. If you are built differently and this jacket fits you well, you will love it b/c you can use it for so many different things and it looks cool.
