The Icebreaker Women’s GT260 Quantum Hooded Top acts as a warm hoody on October backpacking treks, and the curved front seams and semi-fitted cut make the Quantum a smooth mid-layer option for ski trips come winter.
Midweight merino wool naturally regulates your body temperature and deals with odor
Eyelet gussets under the arms increase range of motion and venting
Shaped hood boosts head warmth when you forget a beanie
Drop-tail hem adds back coverage
Two-way, reflective front zipper alerts motorists when you’re out for an evening run
I love this top. It fits great. The arms are long enough to wrap your hands up when it is a little chilly. The collar is tall and nice on windy or cold days. It is incredibly warm and comfortable. It is also nice enough to wear to dinner after a day of skiing or hiking. This hoody is great for long trips where it is nearly impossible to find a laundry mat because even after a month of wear it doesn't smell. The only draw back is that you have to be careful that roommate doesn't throw it in the dryer on high because it will shrink. And it isn't the lightest weight top.
I had high hopes for this jacket. Firstly, I expected it, at minimum, to keep me warm in our house as an extra layer. Our house isn't *that* freezing (about 67 F), but even as a third layer, I haven't noticed that much of a difference. I have cheap acrylic sweaters that keep me warmer than this jacket. (Ha, and I was expecting it to help out on a trip to Iceland - what was I thinking?!)
Secondly, the fact that it doesn't have hand pockets is really annoying. Yeah, yeah, I know - it's supposed to be a layering piece meant for active sports. At least that's what the gals told me at the Icebreaker store told me in explanation about why they don't make the magic combo of thumbholes + pockets. But the reality is that sometimes you're still going to hang out, "active" person or not, and it would be nice to be able to keep your fingers warm while you're at it.
I have no complaints whatsoever about the fit - nice shapely tailored look to it. I like the high collar, but be warned that the hood is VERY snug especially if you have shoulder-length or longer hair, and it's not like I have a massive noggin.
I got the black and have found that in the few times I've worn it that it really is a lint magnet. Keep that lint brush handy if you go with a dark color!

I'm in love. This is my best gear purchase of 2011. Pros: it's super warm - especially when you're moving in it. Almost too warm for fall -- i think I'd hike in the winter in this bad boy. It fits very well, does the job, doesn't get stinky (I don't understand this magic), moves with you, has supersweet thumbholes, and looks really nice. I hike in it and wear it out to casual things like bbqs and the grocery store (probably more often than I should, but it looks nicer than the typical NF zip-up). The hood is a legit hood -- not one of those stupid hoods that catches the wind and doesn't keep you warm (I do look a little like a bobsledder when it's pulled up though). This is my first experience with the Icebreaker brand and I'm very pleased. I'll purchase again. Maybe some underpants!
The only weirdness is that my arms and neck get a little itchy if I have it over a tanktop. I apparently have princess skin these days, so I've been wearing it over t-shirts or long sleeves. I also wish there were hand pockets. Also, there's only one side pocket (right side) that goes backwards so you can't stick your hand into it without looking insane. I also wear black pants a lot so I often look like a ninja (pro not con) -- maybe should have purchased a different color.
Sizing info: I'm 5'6", 115 lbs. I ordered a small based on height/chest/arm measurements on their sizing chart -- there's a bit of room in the whole jacket and the arms are long enough to pull down over your hands. The back comes down pretty far too and keeps my butt warm. I could have probably went with an XS but it's super comfy in the S size -- it has room for layers underneath, but it's not bulky at all.
How does this compare to the Rapid Zip (which doesn't have a hood though) in terms of fit and warmth? I've been debating the two. They appear very similar-perhaps the pockets are different too?
This hoodie is one of the latest additions to my growing Icebreaker wardrobe - and it matched my high expectations! I wore it every day alpine skiing over the holidays, then put it on again for dinner and hanging out afterwards. It's warm and cozy and has a flattering fit - not tight and not baggy. It's consistent in sizing with my other Icebreaker wear - I'm 5'4", 120 lbs and the XS fits perfectly.
I own many many (too many) Icebreaker pieces and this one is by far the greatest, most versatile, wearable, smell free, comfortable.... ever!! I have one in every color and wear them all the time. I love the thumbholes - they hit me at the right length on my monkey arms. I also love the dropped tail for my long torso (I'm 5'11" and 160# and Medium is perfect). It washes beautifully, too!! Keeps its shape, just don't put in the dryer. PURE LOVE!!!!
The lining for the poppy colored jacket is light grey and the lining for the black jacket is a darker grey. It looks like the close-up detail images are from a navy color that is no longer in stock, so disregard the light blue color you see there.
Excellent hoody - makes a great layering piece, and the thumb holes in the sleeves are perfect for when you run out the door without your gloves. My only criticism is that when I wore it recently with the zipper zipped all the way up, it chafed my neck. But I was wearing it under my soccer jersey while playing in temps in the 30s, which isn't really what this was designed for (it did keep me warm, though!). I'll get some Under Armour for on the field, and keep this to wear to and from the game. Even over a sports bra, it still gives me nice curves!
This is by far the most vesatile piece of Icebreaker clothing I have. I bought this as a layering piece last winter when I was working at a mountain venue during the Winter Olympics. I wore it everyday for weeks! Got lots of compliments on it too. Love the way it fits too.
I just received this top in the mail and love it... yet it's a tad big. Worried about it being a bit frumpy but I really can't take it off yet. :) Was wondering if anyone knew if this top is going to stretch out (cause if so, I need to return it STAT) or if I did put it in the dryer, would it shrink too much?
I have the Quantum 220 shirt from Icebreaker (meaning, same type of fabric, just a little lighter weight) and have been using it for about 6 months now with no sign of it stretching. Mine is also a little on the big side, so I think you'll be fine. The good news is, if you bought this through backcountry.com and it ever stretches to the point that you aren't happy with it you can take advantage of their no-questions-asked return policy.
Since the weather is cooler, I wear this top all the time. I like the full zipper for ease of putting on and taking off and the thumb hole is a nice addition. I am sure I will use the hood quite a bit when the temperatures drop. Also, since I have a small, hourglass figure, the fitted design of the top is very flattering. I am 5'3" and bought a small. Icebreaker has become my favorite go to clothing for not only my weekend hiking but for everyday wear.
This is what the San Francisco Chronicle said about the Quantum Hood:"Made of 100 percent merino wool, the mid-weight jacket is cozy and soft - but lacks the itch factor. The sleeves come with thumb loops, so you can secure them lower on your hands when the weather's cool. The reflective front zipper comes in handy for wearing at night, and eyelet gussets in the sleeves aid in ventilation. Each Icebreaker item has a "baacode"; enter the number in a box on the company website to see where your wool came from."
I love Icebreaker and this is a great addition to my collection! I bought this for an upcoming trip to NZ where we'll be camping, hiking and kayaking in cool temperatures. Icebreaker is great for traveling and outdoor activities, as it does exactly what it states: keeps you cool, keeps you warm and it doesnt smell. The fit has a nice cut but allows enough space for layering underneath. It's soft and has a very functional hood for cooler temps. I'm 5'10/ size 8 and the medium fit perfect with enough length in the arms. I bought the quartz, which was a nice change from black. This is a great all around hoodie!
I know I'm getting quality when I purchase anything from this company, but rarely do I get so excited just taking the clothing out of the box! This jacket is perfect! It's cute enough to wear around town, not just for outdoor activities. I think I need an intervention because I'm totally addicted to Icebreaker. The 260 weight is perfect worn alone on cool days and great for layering on cold/frigid days. The red color really pops and the cut is SO flattering. Fits tts, although definitely fitted. I can wear a tee type shirt underneath and a baselayer is no problem, but if you want to layer much more under it you might consider sizing up.
This is my second Icebreaker 260 Full-Zip hooded Top and I love it. Perfect any day aound the year when you want somthing perfectly warm and comfortable. Also perfect as mid layer for downhill skiing as it gives a very nice wind shield in the neck. It is very fitted and normal sizes applies.
great jacket--with or without layers. super comfortable, soft and warm, great colors (blue and aqua); the only criticism i have isthat it should have front zip pockets. that's a big requirement for me--with all the activities i use this for...
This sweater is great - I wear it every weekend. It hasn't balled or pilled at all and looks brand new despite all the use. I wash it and line dry and haven't had any trouble. It is fairly heavy weight and wouldn't be great for doing a lot of exercise in but is super for after. I'm 5'4, 135 and the small is perfect.
Love the bright colors available here- I have the poppy and it looks awesome on. Fit is great too- I got mine a size larger than normal so that I can use it for layering. The thumb loops are key and the 260 fabric weight will keep you super toasty. Remember to dry it flat to keep the wool from shrinking! This piece is a great investment- you'll become an Icebreaker fan for life!!
I love this top! I have worn it nearly every day since I got it which was a few weeks ago. It is so soft and warm, I can't resist! I have worn it on cold days skiing in the mountains as a layering piece as well as over a t shirt around town and at home. Very versatile and enjoyable to wear.
